Social and emotional learning: Trish Shaffer at TEDxUniversityofNevada

Trish Shaffer is the Coordinator for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for the Washoe County School District (WCSD). In this talk, she discusses the practice and value of social and emotional learning.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Lovely speech. I agree, connections can explain why students don't want to be at school, because... that's honestly how i feel. And if students were educated at a young age socially and emotionally, imagine how much more active & different our communities would be.

I agree with her a lot of students are dropping out of school because of being bullied and some do nt know how to deal with two , they need somebody to go around to all the school and educate teacher and students on social skill and how to rightly express your emotions

Wow I wish my school had this program, all I remember was having a teacher come up to me and say everyday for me to try to make some more friends, I asked how but she couldnt answer me. Only got good friends at high school, and they told me later that the reason why other kids wouldnt talk to me was because they thought I was lesbian do to my short hair, but they didnt mind. And when I told everyone I wasnt gay it got me more friends, but I still stuck around that first group because they were awesome.

Great speech. Seemed a bit "memorized from transcript, Biggest issue was that while the talk was great on identifying the problem there wasn't much on what we could do specifically as teachers. That would be a great follow up Ted Talk.

There are so many great points made in this TED presentation. Every educator needs to have Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in their teaching simply because teachers need not just teach their students academic content, but students need to know how to interact appropriately with their peers, agree/disagree respectfully with one another, and know how to become a productive member of society.

She's a complete ideologue, and very ill-informed. Resilience is built by the experience of having faced risk and challenge, and having overcome it. The more often that happens, the stronger kids get. Every study on anxiety and fragility shows that's true. But this "care bear" thinks that "teaching awareness" is how it happens. She's just wrong, and should read a book on psychology.

I dont suppose you could blame it on the rising narcissism that is taught by the schools, govt, media, facebook, twitter, et al. I find it so interesting that when education, both academic and moral/social was left to the parents, these conditions didnt exist anywhere near where they do now; if at all. The more responsibility and authority is taken away from the parents the more society goes down the drain. Of course, another govt mandated education program will fix all these ills. "Please, help me". ROFThrowingUp!

a lot of high level fluffy speech with not enough fundamental substance behind it. e.g. "need to be taught social and emotional skills to end the bullying cycle" bullying is caused by parents bullying, and seeing people around them bullying to get what they want, and it being not condemned. Kids will always absorb and adapt. It's up to the adults to set the tone, and not bully or treat kids via bullying. The entire school system is baesd on coersion adn denying the kids' inner feelings, preferences, and desires. Teachers are paid by the state taxing people, who are kidnapped and locked up, and shot if they resist paying.
