    When talking about actual power gains it makes sense that the only real way to achieve this is by altering the engine. Performance can be changed much more easily and for less money. Changing the gearing changes the way the bike rides. I mentioned on another video of yours that I got the biggest change by going to a 16t sprocket. This improved my top end performance. If you want better acceleration, that rocketship feeling, you could drop a tooth in the front and increase in the rear. I believe Hitchcock’s sells a 14 for the front and a 40 for the rear. That combination should drastically change the low end acceleration. You lose top speed, but most of the fun is down low anyway. I’m sure you could manage it yourself as well.

  • @thesundayrides

    @thesundayrides

    Hey! And thanks for the comment! Yep, I did that to my other small cc bikes and it was a great upgrade for me. I already got 14t sprocket and it just waits a good day. Was it hard to undo the froth sprocket nut? Can it be done without the power tools? I have the proper torq wrench to torq the nut back on with the correct force.

    Have someone stand on the rear brake and put it in gear if you need to. I did mine without power tools. It’s a fairly simple process. I think you could probably increase the rear too and keep the stock chain. Now that I’m thinking about it maybe I’ll try it in the spring.

    When I saw your video about your disappointment about the mods you performed I thought your expectations were skewed. If you actually read the data on those mods they usually described supportive performance . There may be slight gains but the more noticeable feel is in smoothness of throttle performance and sound. Now the s&s total exhaust kit is the only manufacture I would trust the data on. All that being said I wanted to suggest a performance cam but I thought you might not be open to the suggestion from viewer. Glad you found someone's opinion you trust. You should be careful with this upgrade. Be sure it's a cam you can install that doesn't require any additional machining. I would suggest you talk to Hitchcock's about this mod. The seem to be the only place that's done this type of research reliably. I do know they have a cam upgrade for the 350 and a great video on its install. I can say from my experience installing a cam in a Harley I owned its was a game changer. Really increase the power of the engine. So much so the bike was kind of scary. Also find out if a cam will require a power commander or will the OEM ECU support a new cam. It's not a difficult job to do just take your time. This will give you a noticeable impact in power. Still these bikes are not high revving speed beasts. So keep your expectations based in reality. These bikes have a more relaxed power curve. I look forward to your cam install.

That’s one of the reasons why I started this channel- to find new connectors, to get more knowledge and to have fun experimenting and trying new stuff. So would love to hear from you more! Thanks for supporting the idea with the camshaft. I am now looking for a correct product and the shop that can get it fitted. Both Stan and you suggest that the job is doable, but my working conditions are not that great for such a job, so I will need to ask a mechanic for help.

    Respectfully. This bike will never act or perform like a modern speed bike. Prior to investing money and time. It may be prudent to talk with Hitchcock's about your expectations. Be very specific in your desires. Just saying more power is kind of vague . This is a very under stressed. Could it easily support a big bore kit ? Yes. But that would require some machining work which will add to cost. Personally I won't upgrade any further than a new cam. Even before that I would spend more time on the bike . It took me a while to mesh with the classic 500. Understand how the revs build up and how to make the best use of them. I hate to see you drop a cam amd still not be happy. All that said. Great videos . Very informative and helpful. I look forward to your decision and further videos.

I also don’t want to change to a faster bike too soon. I am very realistic about my level of skill and riding experience. Having said all this, it’s also the curiosity. I’d like to discover the full potential of the bike. Thank you very much for your detailed and informative posts!

    Another great video Max, but more than that it was very useful. I am not sure that Stan said anything here I wasn't already aware of (the performance Cam or the Big Bore kit) but it was very interesting to get his perspective. More importantly for me was the addition of yet more evidence for how these "performance mods" are mostly a disappointment. To be honest, I have considered some of these, but for different reasons. The air filter change (not mentioning the brand here) I might consider, but not for any perceived performance increase, but for the change in engine sound. The same goes (potentially) for the exhaust change. It's not for the performance, but more as a weight loss strategy (those things are just so heavy). Lowering the weight will make the bike handling a little lighter and that may lead to the feeling that you are getting more performance. The most important thing that Stan said was about perspective. The bike you choose, the mods you make, and your feeling for what has contributed to a "performance increase" are all entirely subjective. You could spend hundreds on "performance upgrades", but at the end of the day, if you don't feel it was worth it then its all been for nothing, and then buyers remorse will set in. Certainly the big bore kit is a very expensive mod and comes with lots of follow on requirements. All the best Max, keep up the fascinating videos.

  • @thesundayrides

    @thesundayrides

    Thanks, Brian! Agree, weight reduction makes a noticeable change to handling and overall readability, I am happy that I did it. As for the sound - in my experience the end cans were more than enough to change the sound to my liking. both the tone and the loudness are just right for me. free flowing pipes didn't add much to it. I also kind of agree with those who say - oh, just buy another bike. but only party. I went for a ride this morning. I got those wide flat tracker bars back on. and I thought - i got how much i love riding on this bike, i don't want anything else. Thanks for watching and commenting! It's great to have these little conversations with you. Hope this summer I can make it to Scotland! Cheers! Max

  • @stanzgarage

    @stanzgarage

    By mentioning all the mods you planned to do, you are in principle, increasing the performance of the bike! Think about it.. A lighter bike handles easier, allowing you to extract more "performance" from the bike. A free-flow air filter allows you to hear the engine more, making you want to rev the bike out harder, thereby extracting more "performance" from the bike. "Performance" doesn't just allude to spec sheet numbers, but your ability to extract all that the bike can offer (which honestly most people never reach the stock bike's limit of!) You brought up an interesting point though, and I'm sure others can definitely pick up from your pov! 😁

    The engine mods are more expensive and is gonna need an expert still at the end u need to do a ecu upgrade . If u ask me it’s more cheaper and better to do an ecu upgrade , u got better air intake , free flow exhaust and an ecu upgrde is gonna do better performance ; if u go for big bore u are increasing performance by increasing engine cubic capacity , which again requires better breaks and suspension .

    These add " performance " bits never really add.... performance... a change of exhaust might sound better but doesn't on its own add any giddy up and go.. Performance requires bigger bore.. snappier cam and bigger jets or fuel upgrades with FI... They offer big bore kits.... but then does the cost...hassle... warrant the return... ? Or just crack open the wallet and buy a Triumph... 😎

    Hey Joe! Congrats on the new pipes! How did it go? Mine were a bit of a nightmare to install 😂 but I love the looks and sounds of it! I did what all people recommended - 20 mines of idling. This in theory should allow ecu to adapt. There is another group of people who claim our ecu is not self adjusting. I don’t know for sure, but I have no issues with the system. I also have fuel x installed that is there to manage the fuel mixture. Your new system weight a lot less, so that should improve overall performance
