In many ways, The Electric Company mocked educational television; and by doing so, it was actually educational.

I'm amazed to see how far Morgan Freeman has progressed in his career and to think that I had been a great fan of his since his being part of "The Electric Company" is a sight to see and appreciate!

Considering all the narration he does, he STILL IS Easy Reader, in a way. 😃

Though Morgan didn't enjoy doing The Electric Company - he stuck it out only because it was his "first taste of financial security" - it was the beginning of a versatile, talented actor who could play a wide range of roles, both comic and dramatic. Not only Easy Reader, but Mel Mounds the DJ, Marco the Magician, Vincent the Vegetable Vampire, and many more. Thanks for posting!

@@jkingvevo2472 He was only on for that season. I don't know a whole lot of Morgan's work Before TEC but he did do Broadway and read he was part of the all back production of "Hello Dolly." Obviously he's a good singer which is probably not known by many. Certainly did it was on the show. Funny thing the same year TEC debuted he was in a Children's film called "Who Said I Can't Ride A Rainbow." Can't remember now what it was about and since most of his movies were dramatic roles, I wonder what he was pondering early on?

He's right. Electric Company didn't teach comprehension, but it helped me with phonics. An intricate part of early literacy.

So I was wrong about everything I comprehended in the sketches of "The Electric Company"? It taught phonics, word recognition and comprehension. Certainly many sketches had words being used in sentences. "It's the plumber; Ive some to fix the sink." Then we could comprehend what a plumber is as he comes to the house with his tools box. "Jennifer Of The Jungle" sure seemed to be in a set emulating a jungle, and so on. What a strange thing for Morgan to say at the end, and Rich should have detailed this kind of thing.

Morgan should be grateful to have done something for the kids who didn't know how to read. I understand that he wanted to be more at that time in his life. Still sometimes humility goes a long way.

I always associated Judy Graubart in particular with kids stuff. The show was in reruns by the time I was born (1976), but I was reading in preschool because of it.

“This a gotta see…bring me a telegram sandwich!” “Can’t bring it to you because you have to eat it over the phone!” I absolutely loved this show as a kid! The humour mixed with learning. You don’t get all the humour as a kid, but it sure was entertaining!

Oh, for the gift of being able to see the future..Heaven bless Morgan Freeman...for all the joy he has given us through the years. He would go on, of course after TEC, to do just about everything but read the damn phone book! "Typecast', indeed. His is the face we love, 'the guy we trust the most', the narrator voice we smile upon hearing. Long may he wave -- as far as HIS "type"? -- (Just marvelous)..I'll take it...any day of the week!

Rita Moreno expressed a similar apprehension. But in her case, it was other people who warned her not to do The Electric Company, else she'd be stuck in children's entertainment. Rita managed to attain other acting roles in more "grown-up" media. Still, Morgan may have a point: all their other roles may not have opened up, had The Electric Company not wrapped up in 1976 (despite my sadness as a youth to see it end).

I remember an electric company segment where morgan tasted 2 kinds of cola. one was in a brown cup with a light yellow q on it and the other was in a brown cup with a light yellow m on it. hattie Winston or lee chamberlain is also in that segment. when he tasted the q cola, he made a yucky face but swallowed it anyway. when he tasted the m cola, he spat it out and then said something about both colas being from the land of yuck. I keep hoping someone will post that electric company segment on youtube

Freeman has said that being recognized for that show in his 70's is his greatest nightmare. I'll bet he'd give half his fame and fortune to wipe it from everyone's memory.
