Rita Moreno: 'For many years, I didn't like being a Hispanic person'

Legendary actor Rita Moreno, who stars in new dark comedy "The Prank,' opens up to TODAY about her experience moving to New York from Puerto Rico as a young child and the struggles she faced as a Latina, saying she saw herself as “unworthy and without value.” “For many years, I didn't like being a Hispanic person,” she says, and adds that it took her a long time to love who she is. “It really took forever because that’s ingrained in you when you’re very young.”

This is not so much a concept of being brown. There is a historical aspect PR is an unincorporated territory of USA and as such there was a great economic co-dependance with aid and federal assistance programs. Even among the hispanic community which is made up of different latin American countries they view PR differently. For instance, I once heard from a South American hispanic saying 'PR is like the handicap child that will never be able to bring nothing to the home' Even now a days many PR healthcare professionals do not want to practice in PR because the whole island is on Medicare and Medicaid and their earning reflect that. Among the Mexican immigrants who work in construction and farming many view PR as the lazy bunch of the immigrant groups because is unheard of them working on such jobs. There are many people from different latin American countries but within there is classism/social standing based on income, education and lifestyle.

@@MrFunkadeIic PR is not a state of the USA. PR It is officially known both as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and as a Free Associated State of Puerto Rico. Although they are U.S. citizens, residents of Puerto Rico - whether born there or moved there - cannot vote in presidential elections and do not have representation in Congress beyond one non-voting member. USA Congress made Puerto Ricans U.S. citizens in 1917, about 19 years after taking control of the island. Later, when the island passed its 1952 constitution, Congress decided to make Puerto Rico a commonwealth. PR has its own CONSTITUTION and in worldwide events such as olympics, panamerican games, pageants and other world wide events PR sends its own representation just as the UNITED STATES of America sends its own.

@@kintsukuroi6300 A pageant is not an indication of a political status. Samoa sends their own people to pageants and they are also a US Territory. To educate you further, each state has its own Constitution. And when a PRican takes a plane and lands in Orlando, they can automatically vote as long as they register to vote in their county. The same rights that apply to mainland citizens apply to them. There are some exclusions such as voting for the president and electing a representative. But those are unconstitutional practices if you ask me since PRicans are US citizens like everyone else in the 50 states. At the end of the day, my point was that PRicans are free to travel within the 50 US as they please since it is part of their country. Read my original post, somebody from Washington DC which is also a territory can easily move to Virginia by renting a U-Haul. Same for PRicans. Have a good one

Well, truthfully she only spent a few days of her youth in PR and looks like she's from Vermont so she really don't have to, it's a choice.

I hated being from the south. People, including family, can make you ashamed of who & what you are. It took me DECADES to get over it and I worked diligently at it. Thank goodness I did. My sister is in her 70's & has made very little, if any progress.
