Why Life Inside A Tank Sucks

We've shown you why living on an aircraft carrier sucks, and boy was it rough, but in today's video we're going to show you why living inside a tank actually sucks worse. Buckle up for this new amazing, funny military video where we spend some time locked in an armored tank. While it's one of the safest places to be in the world, it may also be one of the smelliest.

The M26 Pershings out-classed the T-34/85s that the DPRK used in their initial invasion. In theory, the M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" Shermans were on a par with the Soviet-supplied T-34s, but in reality WAXED them, due to factors such as logistics, leadership, doctrine, training, and that the UN forces had air superiority, especially in the August and September 1950 battles along the Naktong river near Pusan.

First, Abrams have spall netting to protect from fractured armor. Second, they have taken out one of our Abrams M1A2 with an RPG shot into the rear vents, and we had to use the thermite charges to scuttle the thing FAST, and keep moving! So yes, we have lost Abrams to enemy fire.

Some corrections: 1: The Abrams is actually quite spacious and comfortable. The crew are dispersed so they rarely get in each other’s way. 2: While I cannot speak for all tankers, US Army Major Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran (who has a channel on KZread, btw) said that unless he was under intense enemy fire, he almost never closed the hatch completely 3: The animation is nothing like what being in a tank is like. The driver is in a separate compartment by himself, and the gunner and commander are seated 4: Due to the fact that a nuclear bomb hasn’t been used in war for 75 years, tanks rarely if ever use their NBC capabilities. 5: If you don’t think gunpowder is a pleasant smell, then I’m sorry but you’re not an American, no matter what your birth certificate says. 6: RPGs and IEDs are still a threat to modern tanks. I take extra offense to the fact that the narrator scoffs at the idea of an IED doing any damage to a tank. At the American Heritage Museum just outside of Boston is a USMC Abrams that, before it became a museum piece, was hit by an IED, tragically killing the Commander. 7: Tankers can bail out. It happens. Getting hit IS survivable. 8: it’s pronounced “Say-bow”, not “Sa-bot”. Not a big nitpick, but it shows how little the production team actually knows about the subject.

Buttoned up, not down!! I am a 19 Kilo myself with 12 years of service and experience with multiple variations of the M1e1, M1a1D, M1a2, and M1a2SEP....... And come on now, it’s not that bad to roll out the 4 crewmen’s sleeping bags on the back deck of the jet-turbine engine that has been running for about an hour, and with a tarp covering the gun-tube it will stay warm and dry all night long; and on those rainy monsoon days in the ROK, it is a true blessing to us “Kilo’s” Furthermore my crew and I hit 3 IED’s in Samarra City, Iraq that did a lot more than scratch the paint!! More like destroyed the track, roadwheels, shock arms, hubs, support rollers, torsion bars, sprockets........... and the last big blast put our old horse out to pasture for good........But we did get the brand new M1a2 SEP when we returned home from Iraq!!

This is right out of history. Yes, service in a tank in general has always been tough, especially when the opposition controls the air. But, as an historian, I'm thinking back to that giant 'tank' we built, during our Civil War. The sailors noted in letters appearing in the newspapers or later published that life aboard the advanced tech (for the times) Monitor was incredibly harsh, with inadequate heating, cooling, drying, air circulation, and ocean stability...

Was platoon leader and company commander of a tank unit for many years. We had both the M48A5's and the M60's. We trained for desert warfare and fighting in Korea. Wasn't all that bad even when it was over 110 F outside. Believe me we never relieved ourselves inside. We also fired many main gun rounds and the tank has an over pressure system to evacuate any bad air inside. Compared to the infantry tankers have little to worry about from fragmentary artillery rounds. One important thing was we carried a 5 gallon jerry can full of water for each crewman and made sure they drank it everyday while in the desert.

A total of 23 M1A1s were damaged or destroyed during the war. Of the nine Abrams tanks destroyed, seven were destroyed by friendly fire, and two were purposely destroyed to prevent capture after being damaged. Some others took minor combat damage, with little effect on their operational readiness.

Sheridans were very light, at 18 tons. They coulden't take the stuff an Abrams would laugh off. Anyway, taking a leak in a tank only requires an empty ammo box (usually plenty around). Has a nice rubber gasket, and locks shut. For #2, try the .50 cal. box. Geez! Did you see "Fury"?

Interesting wording. 'None have been destroyed by enemy fire'. Technically true but this tank has been knocked out by enemy fire on numerous occasions. Unable to continue the fight and had to be withdrawn from the front line. In 2 instances scuttled by its own crew to prevent it falling into enemy hands. Not to mention several friendly fire incidents. Although many crewmen have been wounded in action in these tanks, thankfully none have been killed in action.

The tank driver is located in the hull of the the tank so not all 4 crew members standing together inside the tank. The breech of the main gun was not present in the turret. Crew members in the turret are seated and not standing in a row. The tank commander and the loader have hatches they can open and may stand up in and ride out of on a nice day during maneuvers. As for using the bathroom inside the tank it doesn't happen that way. The track doesn't break all the time and is reliable and reasonably fixable. Crew members are not weak outside of the tank and are brave soldiers. Other then that...

I'm an American, but my grandfather is a Chinese man, and back in the 60s, he served in the People's Liberation Army (Chinese Army)'s 38th Group Army (which has been renamed the 82nd Group Army)'s 6th Armored Division (which was disbanded after their 38th Group Army was renamed the 82nd) as a tank commander, and of course he described his experience of being in a tank as austere; he detailed it as being cooked, and burnt alive since heat got trapped inside the tank. Keep in mind that his unit was operating old 20th century dated hand me down Soviet tanks that were exported to China before the Sino-Soviet split, so there wasn't any air conditioning in there at all, and as said before; the armor of the tank made it a heat conducting tin can that trapped heat inside of it, seriously cooking it's occupants alive. And if it was cold instead of hot, he and his crew were frozen to their seats (and unable to get up). Tanks look cool but, they're not fun to operate that's for sure. And to those of you Slavaboos who admire Soviet tanks; be advised those are even worse to drive around than American tanks.

I used to drive and command tanks while serving the army, mainly T80U's and BMP3's, even just training outside the camp was miserable the first couple times, we would wear our vests while the tank was sealed off, the temperature was so unbearable I even had my gunner pass out from the heat, a bit of water and shade did the trick. But shooting was the best part, yes you would have gunpowder inside the cabin but the BMP had an NBC System that created pressure inside the tank so the powder would go out of the barrel instead of the cabin. Fun times.

Filtered air intake for crew NBC and temperature control. Ammunition storage bins are insulated so can also store cold drinks inside them. Finally, should an NBC attack occur, there is a refuse chute that ejects out the tank and can be used for the inevitable call of nature.

the English really understand crew comfort in tank design. if im correct, every British tank designed after ww2 had to have a boiling vessel as a rule.

HESH (squash head) projectiles are not really a threat today, rarely anybody uses them. Reason? First of all, composite armor. It can absorb a lot of the shock (most of composite armors have an empty cavity that completely negates the HESH effect). Secondly, most modern tanks have their inside walls padded with kevlar which significantly decreases spalling. Finally, it depends a lot on the place that was hit. It needs a really flat and homogenous surface. If it hit, as said, composite, sideskirts, cage armor or some other thing sticking out (smoke boxes, for example), it will be useless. HEAT also, believe it or not, relies on spalling. Some of the stuff effect it in a much lesser extent than HESH. It also creates pressure and is more dangerous, but saying it means 100% death for entire crew if penetrates is exaggeration. All of this, however, don't mean the life of a tank crewman is easy or pleasant... Far from it... But get your facts right

You want to talk about the dangers of a tank? Add this to the next Abrams American battle tank related video... growing up my mom met my stepdad who was in the Army at the time in the early 90s and late 80s and he went through every Command Post in a tank. Started out as a driver went to a loader then went in as a Gunner and then became a tank Commander. He started in at the end of the Cold War and got out just before Desert Storm he started on the old Sherman's and when he got out he was commanding the M1 A-1 Abrams. Later on when I was old enough he told me a story about the dangers of an Abrams telling me when I was old enough that once upon a time when he was starting out on tanks he witnessed an incident where a guy was poking out of the driver's hatch of an M1 Abrams at the waist and it turned out to be the wrong time because the turret was turning and ended up cutting the guy in half at the waist. Include that please.

The heat can reach up to 40C and after you shot the smoke is all over the turret The T54 armor is just like the T34 vs the Tiger I. All of the tanks dont have toilets, the smell is the worst. But this is what I sigh up for, This is the best job I have ever had before. In the end I just want to say thank you to you The Infographics Show you always make my day better.
