    I just bought a house built in 2016 and the grill was so full of dirt I took it down to clean it. It was a complete mystery why it was running continuously at the low speed. I thought maybe it had a humidity sensor that wasn't working. I started searching the internet and your explanation and was the best and most complete. Thank you for the peace of mind, one more thing I don't have to fix. One of these days I will have to climb into the attic to check the fresh air intake, my HVAC air handler is in the attic.

    We have a fan that stays on all the time, and vents out through the roof, it has a light, and the switch on the wall turns the light on and off. It's was installed in 2013, and only occasionally makes a little noise, but usually it's quiet. I was thinking about going up in the attic to try and clean it, but I'm afraid since it's run so long if I shut the power off, it might not come back on.

    Thank you for the info! The issue I have is when the a/c is on, the exhaust fan is on, so the cool a/c air is being sucked outward and not really cooling the bathroom. After I turn the a/c off, a couple of minutes later the exhaust fan also stops. And when I turn the a/c on, shortly thereafter, the exhaust fan kicks in.

    You’ll have to process of eliminate it may just be simply replacing the switch as it may have failed, or the fan motor needs to be replaced. I would start with pulling the switch out disconnecting one of the wires on the switch and touching it to the other wire to see if the fan turns on. If it does then just replace the switch. If it does not then it’s something with your exhaust fan. At that point your best bet would be to have an electrician come in to repair or replace.

    Is it possible to turn off the fan completely (i.e. so it does not run continuously)? I was unfortunately talked into installing two of these Broan fans in my master bathroom (to replace the two old-style fans from years ago), so with both of them at the lowest setting of 30CFM my overall minimum for the room is 60CFM and I really have no need for that much continuous exhaust. So I'd like to prevent one of them from continuous operation. Thanks for any advice and thanks for your instructional video! 🙂 p.s. On a somewhat related note, continuous exhaust also continuously exhausts heat from the room too, yes? That's not so great for northern climates like Maine where we need to heat the room (and house) for extra months. Nobody seems to mention that aspect in anything I've read so far online. Thanks again.

    Thank you I’m happy to hear you like the video. Yes, an electrician can wire them differently to where they act as a normal exhaust fan that turn on and off with the switch, and does not continuously run. Unfortunately, it’s not something I can walk you through, you’d have to have an electrician open up the fan and rewire it accordingly.

If there aren’t any dials I would get an electrician to help you. There’s gotta be a way they can wire it so it just turns completely off with no continuous running.

    Hi. Thank you for making this video. My home was built in 2015. The exhaust fan in my upstairs bathroom has been running continuously for about 5 days now. I’ve lived here since the house was built and I’ve noticed the fan running before without the switch on and it’s been a softer quieter sound. Now for the last 5 days, it’s been a louder almost annoying sound. What condition does the environment have to be before it shuts off? Ironically, my daughter says she heard something crawling around in the vent about the same time the fan started running continuously 🤔

  • @BJPoznecki

    @BJPoznecki

    3 жыл бұрын

    My pleasure Angela! The fan has no correlation with the environment typically there is a timer that when you switch the fan off it runs for a set time depending on what the electrician that installed it said it too. At this point it’s too hard to diagnose what’s going on especially if a critter is up there and maybe they chewed on the wiring and somethings failed. At this point I would call an electrician to come in.

If you don’t, there’s a possibility it may not be wired correctly, where it is always on. At that point you would have to have an electrician take a look at it.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, you can’t turn it off other than if you pulled it apart and were able to disconnect the wires. However, I wouldn’t do that if I were you because it’s very important that there’s always fresh air moving through your unit so you don’t get any mold or mildew buildup.

    Na, as long as it’s running at the slowest speed you can set it to, it’s a very minimal cost. Typically higher voltage mechanical systems impact your electric bill such as your air conditioning, electric ovens, electric heaters, etc. This thing is like an LED light bulb it’s nothing. For maximum cost savings I would turn it to the lowest RPM setting, and turn it to the minimum time delay setting so it goes back to that idle speed quicker after you turn the fan off.

It’s funny you should mention that I literally just shot a video (not uploaded yet) on whole house humidifier‘s as I just installed one yesterday for my girlfriend at her condo because it’s really dry in the winter time.
