Constant On Exhaust Fan: What is it and why is it there?
Usually located in your bathroom or laundry room, higher up on the wall than a normal light switch. This fan is designed to run constantly (24/7) in order to maintain the air quality in your home by bringing in fresh air.

You just saved me from pulling out this automated switch. I searched the switch on KZread came up with your video at the top and you just helped me out a lot. Thank you so much for this video.
Us too! I had told my husband about the fan always running in our laundry room and just today (a year after we moved into our new construction home) he finally heard the low fan noise that I had been trying to tell him was going on. This explanation totally makes sense. Now we don't have to let our maintenance guy check on this for us. Thank you so much!
Very little cost to run but it’s also exhausting heat during the winter which increases your heating bill.

The reason why i want to turn it off. Turned on heat during winter months but this fan wants to sucked it all out. There goes utility bill ⬆️ .
Holy cow this was useful! I was seriously considering taking this fan out. I'm glad he explained it since my home builder didn't!
Sure the actual electricity and maintenance is cheap but it pulls all the heat out of the house.

You bet, it does increase heating bills slightly in winter and cooling slightly in summer, but It's nice to have fresh outside air for you and your family. New houses with spray foam insulation are so tight that this feature is important for health. I actually prefer an intake that ducts directly into the return of the air handler so the house is positive and not negative. You can also buy, and some builders use, a small energy recovery ventilator that exhausts and intakes air and transfers heat which will save on heating and cooling bills, but they require routine maintenance and filter changes. My old house here in Phoenix leaks like a sieve, but I still crack a window for some fresh air for the family.
Mine went on 5am this am, I’ve lived here 10 years, never went on, very odd, but thank you.
If the construction is so tight, where is the fan pulling the fresh air in from? Wouldn’t you have to have a window open?
My condo has a constant fan, but the off switch is not in the laundry room like it normally is in other condos where else could they have hidden it? Or can I hire an electrician to add a on off switch in bath?
I'm in a new built home in Vegas. The constant on fan is now making a clicking noise not the low humming noise it used to make. Sierra is the HVAC subcontractor. Is there anything wrong with it?
How does a solution like this make indoor air better in an old house, or new house if you have allergies and live where a lot of pollen and dust are now being brought inside?
Sorry but out of topic....topic is why is the fan is constantly running, and he said at the end why is that fan installed. I was looking for an aswer for my Broan exhaust constantly running even after adjusting the humidity and timer settings.

Clausen hi i am having the same issue with Broan exhaust constantly running in my master bathroom as well..... it’s sooo annoying 😰😰
I'm confused my fan never used to run all the time. Ever since yesterday it has been on. I'm running my AC FOR 2 DAYS STRAIGHT DUE TO 105+ temperatures outside. Is this the reason why?

Sierra LLC worked on my new home. So this fan will pull air from the house below (all the tiny tiny tiny gaps in the well sealed home), into the attic, and through some outlet in the attic?
Thanks for the informative video!
I would like to replace a regular fan in our laundry room with a continuous fan because it's over the cat litter box and even though we clean it 2-3 day, it would be nice to catch the odors as they are created, (:). However, it must be quiet, like bathroom vents in hotels. Any recommendations on which brand/model to look at? Thank you!
Should this fan be mounted next to heating or air conditioning ducts? Wouldn't it also draw out expensive heating or cooling? Plus, what is the logic of placing it in a room like a bathroom which is a common room to have to door closed a lot of the time?
What about it sucking the heat out of your house?

And cooling? Plus not everyone leaves their bathroom door open all the time.
Today we moved our LG washer and dryer away from the wall to clean under and around. When we reconnected them, an exhaust fan in the ceiling came on. We've lived here 16 years and this is the first time it came on. There isn't a switch in our laundry room. Very puzzled as to why it started up.
It's not a good thing let me tell u why I have neighbors that love to make bonfires on an almost daily basis and it stinks up the house I want to take it out can you please tell me how to do this

The constant-on exhaust fan can also suck smoke into a house when there is a wildfire burning (west coast)
This is great information. I'm planning on moving into a 2bd apartment, and one of the bathroom fans is required to constantly stay on. However, its not quiet. It sounds like a good powerful vent. I'm trying to figure out if this kind of vent will spike up my monthly bill. The property says its a Nu Tone bathroom vent. Would you have any idea how much a constant, loud bathroom vent will cost me? Thank you!

Unfortunately, we cannot quantify an actual number of utility usage, however it will be a low power consumption.
If you can, i have a question. when we moved in, the fan would barely run with the switch off. after using the fan, it would slowly return to barely running. 3 years in, it is always on. is this right? is it exhausting warm air out? it's annoying that it changed and i don't know why. thanks!

Hello Todd. I apologize for the delay in responding. After hearing about your exhaust, it sounds like you need a service call as your exhaust is not running properly. What area do you live in? If you are in Las Vegas, we would be happy to help. If not, maybe we can help with a recommendation.

You need a new one.... Yours is busted 👍they are cheap and easy to replace yourself if you want to.
If it's Constant On why have it on a switch at all?

The switch allows technicians to turn off the power going to the fan if it needs servicing. :)

@@sierrallcairconditioninghe6089 Wasn't thinking of that, makes sense. guess you would have to clean it sometime ..
I have a question concerning when taking a shower, does this fan work like a usual fan to remove steam & moisture from the air? Thank you

Hi Barb. Yes, if the constant on fan is in a bathroom, it will remove the moisture. We hope that helps!

So will it automatically turn on higher when taking a shower and prevent the mirror and window from fogging up?
@joegalford2319

@@barbs1of2 The one that is installed in my home, it constantly runs but has a switch on the wall. When you flip the switch, it increases the speed of the fan so it works better for reducing moisture.
My Broan fan runs 24/7 not good in my opinion. I tried everything to getting that fan to turn off on its own, even opening the windows. Its a waste of electricity and a fire hazard

No it’s not
I can't even find a switch to turn it off. One downstairs and one upstairs in the bathrooms.

Take the switch plate off. Should be an on/off switch on the front. Al least mine does.
Yeah, well the nutone that have is annoyingly loud. I turned it off for good. I don't like the fact of that fan running when I'm not home. Things tend to heat up when running a 24/7. Don't need a fire 🔥 because of an overheated exhaust fan.
