Why I'm selling my Canon 500mm F4 IS L

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Why I have decided to sell the best lens for wildlife photography (in my opinion).
Yes I will admit, this is clickbaity as a tittle and thumbnail but its not a lie :D. I really am selling (or have sold) my 500mm F4 IS L. An incredible prime lens that has worked brilliantly with both my 5DIV (full frame) and 70D (cropped sensor) over the years.
Its a little complicated as to why but if you give this a watch hopefully it will all become clear.
Obviously, there is a lot said about gear in this post. I know its something people can get very passionate about so all I will say is that my views expressed here are purely my opinion based on the gear I have used and that I find work for me. I am fully aware they may be other options out there for me or that you as a viewer may have used/own. If you decide to use this video purely as an excuse to preach where I or others are going wrong with gear rather than to ask questions or generate a discussion then I will simply reply to your comment by referring you to this description. Have a lovely day :D.

Trying to make a living in wildlife photography has changed a lot in the last 10 years. The magazine industry has pretty much collapsed, there is a glut of images available by non-professionals all over the net. Most professional wildlife photographers I know have gone to running tours, which is a different skill set; manager, teacher, host. Or they have changed subject matter; underwater photography, astrophotography and others. Giving up gear is tough, I have not sold any of my old DSLR equipment mostly because at the time I did not need the money and now most of it is worth very little. Changing to mostly video makes sense. Just remember many of the successful tiktokers are just shooting on their phones. Their audience does not require the high quality of professional video equipment. I do hope you find your niche and are able to expand, I have enjoyed your videos a lot over the years and it seems you are thinking rationally to allow yourself a future. Good luck with it all and I hope to continue seeing your content on the net.

Hiya Nick! Yes, it really has changed a lot and I believe that will be a continual thing. You are so right about tiktok and the equipment for sure! I am steadily converting a lot of my content to TikTok or Reels and having to think about that going forward. But if i want to think about making money from the footage then this new kind of equipment is needed. It will just be a way of getting extra value from the youtube videos :). Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement, I know you have supported my channel for a long time now so thank you. Hopefully I will be able to keep the content interesting and enjoyable in the years to come.

Hi Matt, selling gear is always tough from a sentimental stand point! I've sold a few bits over the last few gears to upgrade, it was sad seeing the gear go and memories that came with it. You sold me my first DLSR many years ago when you worked the camera shop, I still have it to this day even though I upgraded it, I have been thinking about selling it since I don't use it anymore and allow someone else the chance to capture new memories with it.

Yes, still live in Barnham. Happy to do something, let me know. I’m thinking about where to go on the outdoor photography these days. I have an idea to develop my wildlife art and writing to become more diverse. I’ve just been photographing the brent geese in Bosham for art reference. It was wonderful to become temporaryily immersed in their world. It blows my mind that in the winter they rub shoulders with coffee-toting humans on an afternoon stroll and in summer are in northern Siberia, the world of walrus, arctic fox, snowy owl and reindeer.

I made a similar decision about selling the same lens a few years ago, albeit for a different reason, Canon stopped supporting it which made me nervous should anything have gone wrong with it? So I sold it to recoup some of the outlay, I wasn't in a position to buy the mk2 sadly, so bought the Sigma f4 as a replacement which turned out to be a good choice as it's if anything a tad sharper than the mk1! "I'm selling it to fund a way to produce better video clips" then proceeds to show the amazing video clips that you've filmed! I resonate with this video a lot. At 18 I wanted to be a full time photographer but even back 2007, you could see the market saturating as digital became affordable and I ended up meeting a lot of people who worked in IT with disposable income turning up at events with the newest, highest spec kit whilst I was rocking my 30d and a tamron 70-300. I gave up trying to make money from it and sadly joined the rat race. It sucks that I now have to juggle photography as a hobby with full time work but now I can be like the IT guys I used to meet and I can afford to buy some of the nicer, higher spec stuff. The other point you made about the excitement... Oh I agree, as you've shown over the years I've watched, you don't "NEED" that new stuff for footage BUT I don't see the issue with getting new kit if you "WANT" it! I'm currently wondering about changing from my a7iii (i bought when I did mainly landscapes) to an A7RIV as I now do more wildlife and would love that extra sensor size for crops! Anyway, great video
