I just picked up a 500mm F4.5L USM from a photographer that passed away (he used to shoot birds) in Taos New Mexico, his family told me we want you to own it..... so I picked it up at a bargain price, the old man loved it and kept it in its Canon 500 case. The Bokeh is smoother than a baby's ass..... I can't believe a lens that's almost an antique be so freaking sharp and have the wonderful colors..... I'm using it with my 1DX MK III and my Eos R and works like a dream come true !!!!!

Wow that's a sexy lens! Never had an eye for this kind of photography but can tell you're talented. Good work! 👍

Hi Joe, nice video. I can get my hands on a used 500mm f4 MRKi which is in very good condition for a very good price in my opinion. And I'm thinking on pairing it with my 7dMrkii or getting a R7 instead. I'm based in South Africa so I shoot lotsa wildlife out on safari (big cats, birds, elephants etc). My only concern is the weight of this lens. Due to being in either my own vehicle or on a game viewing vehicle I'll be using it with a bean bag for stability

I've used it on both the R7 and 7D mkii and it works without issue on both, The weight is high but it is something you can hand hold for short periods!

Thank you! I have the Canon R5 and I just bought a Canon 300MM 2.8is. I have only been out once, but I am not blown away by the focus on the lens. Not sure if I am expecting too much or if there is a problem. However, I have found that the lens doesn't have the reach I want for birding. I am thinking of returning it and getting the lens your reviewed here, the 500 F4. Do you have any experience shooting indoor concerts or sports (basketball). Is 500mm TO MUCH for that kind of event?

I've not personally used the 500mm inside as I think it would be abit much! If you think the 300mm isn't there on the reach I would personally go with the 400mm f2.8! Hi Joe I use this on my 5D mk4 with the 1.4 convertor. Excellent at my local deer park where I can't get close enough for a decent photo with out this kit. I use a mono pod screwed straight in the foot. I noticed you have a acra swiss plate. What mono pod gimbal do you use? As I need some advise on what to get

Its the best option I have come across so far!

Canon do make some nice lens but still a bit expensive. Have you tried the Sigma 150 - 600. I'm trying to save for one of those to use with my 90D. I'm an Essex bod too so Colchester would be my nearest zoo too. I'm just about to launch my photography channel which will be my second channel. My main channel is a Koi and DIY channel.

Hi there I have just got this lens and bought it with a 1.4 teleconverter mk3 on my 7d mk2 and the quality is rubbish. Can I ask your opinion on teleconverters or do you just crop in?

Does your image stabilization has a little noise?? I use mine on the R5 and R7..justy got it and when thats on it makes a little noise not bad but its theres

Yeh all the older primes make alot of noise so thats normal, The glass is really heavy so the motors have to work hard

​@@joewhitnallphotography8819thank you. I picked one up recently for 1800.00. As much as I wanted the second version I couldn't afford it. But this one does the job with the R5 and the R7. I just had reservations about leaving the image stabilization on with that motor making the humming noise because I get scared of something breaking and then not being able to fix it. I feel better now thanks for the fast reply

Thats correct, only up to the mkii on the 500mm and mkiii on the 600mm

I paid £2.5k for mine just over a year ago but they have gone up in price since! So if its in good condition sounds about right. I have no issues on my R6 with this lens!

Yeh all the primes seem to made a constant noise with you are tracking or just holding the focus button

Super clean still when you zoom in, I do through tend to use the 2x converter if something is far enough away to require an extreme zoom like that
