Interesting video. I have an r7 with a 100-400mm and I've found that sometimes I need that extra reach that a bigger lense would give me. The only thing holding me back is what you said about minimal distence like with that owl, but that lense is something to think about. (Also subscribed)

Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! My go-to lens is the RF100-500. It's kind of the best of both worlds. It's a bit pricier...but well worth every penny!

My 100-500 will always be my main lens on r7 but I rented the 800 F1 1st and love using it in the winter. -40 degrees in Iowa let me take photos at 100 yards that were tack sharp and decent photos out to 400 yards lol. I really loved the 4k crop mode with the r7 + 800 to give 2300~ mm equivalent all that being said you are correct usually you'll be taking bird photos up close while you're like 30 feet away

Thanks so much! I love my Cotton Carrier! I’m actually planning a video about it. The mic is made by DJI. There’s a link for it in the description. I’ve been really happy with it. It performed really well in the windy conditions I shot this video in. Just a little adjusting in Premiere and it’s good to go!

I think you will LOVE it :) But I always suggest to folks, to just rent this camera and lens, for a week, to see for yourself :) When I rented the R7 for a week, I liked it so much, I ordered one of my own, 2 days before I returned the rental :) With the 800 F11, I almost couldn't believe how great I did with it (didn't trust my own findings) so a month later, I had to rent another one for a week :) lol Same results, so I bought one :)

Great informative review. I use the Panasonic FZ80 for birds and love the 1200mm eq focal length. Being a small sensor camera it has limited low light capabilities but I have been amazed at some of the shots I have gotten that wouldn't be possible at 600mm.

I use the R7 + 800 F11 almost exclusively, for my bird photography. I actually owned the R5 for a year, and took lots of nice shots with it. But reach was always the biggest thing for me. After I rented an R7, and did really great with it, I bought one. Shortly thereafter, I sold the R5 and bought a second R7 + the 600 F11 + the RF 100-400. I don't use the latter two lenses very often, but have them if I need them. I also use a tripod. Oh, the Kirk arca swiss plate is great (but expensive for what it is) and allows for flipping the camera pretty easily if you need to. I use Electronic Shutter for all my perched shots. But for moving stuff / BIF, the First Curtain ES eliminates most of the rolling shutter, and creates zero shutter shock. Of course I'd prefer great light for all my photography > regardless of gear :) However, I've used this combo in very low light, with pretty slow shutter speeds... less than 1/100th, and still got a few razor sharp shots. I always take some faster "safety shots"... but if my subject sticks around, I shoot progressively slower, and just take a LOT of shots. You only need one good one :) Great video ! Hit the nail on the head :)

Thanks for the great comment, Chris! It's a fun combination to have, especially for birds. My go-to set up is the R5 with the RF100-500, but but this setup is great to have as well. My favorite subjects bear, whitetail, elk, etc. often don't require 1280mm! Haha!

I haven't had nearly the problems with rolling shutter with the R7 and electronic shutter on flying birds that I thought I would, but most of my shots are of birds right before or right after takeoff and landing, usually flying right at me rather than side to side.

@@alansach8437 with typical, larger birds, taking a burst of shots, you will usually get a few without any issues. Its tougher for shooting hovering Hummingbirds, but even so, I get some good ones :) ....although now, for hovering Hummers, I usually shoot in EFC

I thought that high pixel density crop sensor of R7 mixed with high aperture F11 would be killed by diffraction, but your gallery prove me wrong, great gallery, superb results with RF800!

Thanks for the video! It basically confirmed what I thought the lens would be :D As a big fan of closeup bird portraits that lens is always in the back of my head (still have the Tamron 150-600 G2 which I think is ecellent if the focus pulsing doesn't f*** up the capture)...

Thanks for watching! The combo technically works great for birds in flight, however, with the long reach and reduced focus area it can be a challenge.

Thanks Stephen! My go to setup is the R5 with the RF 100-500. I really haven’t put it on the R7 too often. If the light is low, I don’t bother with the 800 f/11.

I was an early adopter for this lens. Used it first on an EOS R. Now on a pair of R5 bodies. Considering an R7. Love the lens. Had an ED 800 f/5.6 Nikkor back in film days and an EF600 f.4L IS until a few years ago. Ponderous beasts requiring an equally ponderous tripod and gimbal head. Very limiting! Can't say as I miss either since getting the RF800 f/11. My JJC LH-101 hood has been fine. The Canon hood was unobtainable when I first got the lens but I feel no need to upgrade the JJC to the OEM. While I appreciate the hand-holdability of this lens, I still far prefer it on a tripod, especially for video. While I still use my Wimberly gimbal for this lens, only a light tripod is necessary and my heavy Gitzo 410 is now retired. Another point, a 35mm extension tube can be used to alleviate the rather long minimum focus distance of the RF800. My Fotodiox tube has been fine. It can be useful for small birds with the R5 but might not be necessary with the R7 and its extra reach.

Yes, I used it hand held for while, but started getting a lot more keepers as soon as I started using the tripod. Especially when I'm in lower light situations and trying to really slow down my shutter speed.

I definitely prefer some sort of stabilization when using this lens. I've also thought that I want a big prime, but the versatility and ease of portability that the RF100-500 provides is hard to beat!

I often use that exact combination. For me the most challenging part of this combination is finding the subject. The FOV is so small that it is a real challenge to find the subject. The IQ is very good, the price is great. I use it on my R5 as well. You have reduced autofocus area with both cameras but the area is larger on the R7. If the day is bright enough I have my R5 with the RF100-500, and the R7 with the RF800 F11. If the lighting is a low, I use my old Sigma 150-600C on the R7. It appears you have had good luck with your lens hood. Mine failed on the first outing so I sent it back and went with the OEM unit. I wish mine had worked since the price is great. Maybe I got a bad one but I didn't want to try it again.

Thanks for the great comment! I meant to mention those to things. I often struggle to find the subject when shooting at 1280! And the smaller AF area could be an issue with fast moving subjects, but I don’t plan to shoot fast subjects at f/11. Your setup is exactly the same as my go to kit. R5 with RF100-500 and R7 typically with the RF800. We’re living in amazing times for camera technology!

@@matthewgehly have you, or anyone who sees this, ever considered one of those little laser pointers that attaches to the lens ? So it puts a bright red or green dot like 6" below your subject, making it WAY easier to get your subject in the frame fast ?

@@Chris_Wolfgram Haha! No, I've never considered that. I wouldn't want to shoot a laser towards my subject. It would likely disrupt their behavior and I wouldn't want to cause any issues with the animal's eyes.

Beautiful pictures indeed you took with this combo R7 and the rf 800mm video. You missed a lot in your conclusions to my thought about your newer video about the rf 200-800. Your conclusions are very arbitrair in the heist of posting?

Excellent video, with good advice. To me, it's obvious that a photographer should always fill the screen (when possible) with the wildlife to get sharp photographs, to cut down on interference, dust, flies..etc However, i have to say the Canon RF 800mm f/11 (i purchased one out curiosity, sold it after six months) is almost useless in the UK in Winter, but why wouldn't it be. So i went back to using on my Canon R5, a EF 500mm f/4 mark ii and the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1. I can genuinely understand why people would buy the Canon RF 600mm f/11 or 800 f/11, because they're cheap and obviously incredibly light, but for me they make little sense as lens for wildlife, unless it's a bright sunny day, but even then, they ain't for me.

Thanks for watching! Totally get it! It's a novelty lens. I purchased out of curiosity after laughing it off for quite a while. Certainly not a go-to lens, but it has its place. I can see this as being super popular for people who are birders first and just like to shoot to document their finds.

I had the opportunity to try the 800m this weekened on my r7 . A fellow hiker let me put it on my camera Body to get a shot ,after we spotted a eagles nest over 1/2 mile away . The picture turned out great , Iam now considering getting one of these lens .

I have the R10 and a RF100-400mm. I love this combo. But sometimes I wish I had a little more reach. I was thinking about getting the RF1.4 extender or a RF 600mm. What are your thoughts?

I’m not a fan of extenders. I’m not sure of the specs of the lens, but I think that the lens with the extender would give you a bigger aperture than the f/11 lens.

I use an R7 with a RF 100-500 and the RF 800 F11. I agree the shutter shock is a problem in mechanical mode. I also use electronic shutter exclusively.

@@godsinbox I don’t shoot video. If I’m panning it’s usually will the sky in the background or the background is blurred by the long focal length of the lens. I’m most often shooting with the RF 100-500. My biggest problem with the RF 800 f/11 is lack of light. I’m often shooting under heavy tree cover in swampy areas in South Louisiana. Between both lens you can usually adapt to almost anything.

I haven't used the R7+800 combo in situations where I noticed rolling shutter. I guess I honestly haven't looked closely for it. I have experienced it with the R5+100-500 and would expect it to be the same with the R7.

For anyone willing to use the EF to RF adapter, I find I prefer the Sigma 150-600 (I have the C version not the S one), and having that zoom, as well as f5-6.3 is much nicer, especially with the R7. Then again, I don't usually carry a tripod or monopod with me, so the versatility is great. It's pretty similar in weight in too, just a bit more, and then whatever the adapter adds. But I'm excited to try the 800 for getting photos of the moon. I found 600 with my R wasn't enough for what I wanted.

Sorry, little more? Seriously ? RF 800 Weight 1.25 kilo - when Sigma 150-600 weight almost 2.2 kilo with adapter - it's EXTRA 1 KG weight. ! It's a TON - espacially for day-to-day photo walks and handheld shooting

@@joylox You forget about Extra reach plus you need to stop down for good sharpness on sigma - i.e. you have 600mm F8, me - 800 F11

@@UnluckyNewbie I've actually noticed worse sharpness when wide open with certain Canon lenses compared to Sigma, but maybe it depends on other settings as I notice a difference between my two cameras. If I were to take both bodies out to get shots where I need extreme telephoto, I'd have the R7 (APS-C) with the Sigma 150-600 (equivalent to 240-960), and the R with the Canon 800.

I know nothing about distance etc to me its like maths can you tell me please is it better than or similar to using the nikon p1000? and hello just subbed you.

Thanks for the sub! :) I'm not familiar with the Nikon P1000, but according to what I was able to find it has a focal length range of 24-3000mm. My guess is that the image quality at the longest zoom is not going to be very good. I would think that the R7 with the 800RF attached will produce a sharper image.

I just got my Canon R7 camera and 800mm lens, When I look through the viewfinder the image is unfocused and it says in a box, "Set The lens to the shooting position" What does that mean? Please someone help me.

Hi Raymond! There is a lock on the lens very near where it connects to the camera that you need to twist and then pull the lens to extend it. After extending the lens the whole way you will twist the lock to set it into "shooting position" I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

What seeds were they that you were giving to the birds ?? And what birds like to eat ,give suggestions please

I was just using a cheap generic seed that I got at Walmart. Many people put seed out at that park. The birds are very used to people and will eat just about any seed you give them.

I own that lens and the R7 since two weeks now (27 jul 2023) and all I did for now is taking pictures of... the moon! That is far and the heat and humidity you are talking about is a real fact, but I had and good clear night one day and the images were simply fantastics! I can't wait to take pictures and videos of birds with that lens. I also own the 100-400 rf lens. Another great lens for the price! Have you made a review of it? Just subscribe! Nice vids dude. When you talk about vibration reduction, why don't you use or talk about a monopod?

That’s something that I could have added to the conversation. There is b-roll of me using a tripod.

And good luck getting a sharp image unless you are locked down on the tripod and there is no atmospheric interference (heat waves)!

For the same money you can get the Sigma 150-600 F5.4.... add the 2x Teleconverter that you can get 2nd hand for like 200€ and you will have a lot more versatility and quality.

Autofocus working well?

It works extremely well! The only disadvantage is that the focus area does not cover the entire frame the way that other mirrorless options do. But it’s not a deal breaker.

Whatever the sensor size... 800mm is nothing else than 800mm.

It becomes hard to focus, when the presenter jumps and does hand movements often, while talking like a hiphop clip.

Not 1280mm by any measure. The lens itself isn’t 800mm long, and a crop sensor doesn’t add length. Looking at the images through a magnifying glass also won’t add any focal length.

Without talking about shutterspeed and iso with regards to the f11 aperture, i cannot wholeheartedly subscribe to you channel. If feels like you are holding back information inorder the sell the product better. Otherwise you would be telling us that you are having to shoot at iso6400 and 1/2000 which still isnt a fast enough shutter apeed for lens of that length.

Thanks for watching and for the feedback. I'm not worried about selling Canon's product for them, just sharing my experience with a somewhat controversial lens. I didn't think I was hiding information regarding the shutter speed and ISO since it's on the screen. I was using a tripod, which is featured in some of the b-roll, but I could have mentioned it. Have you used a Canon R7 or R5? If not, you'd be amazed at how well they perform at high ISO levels.
