Best lens purchase ever? My switch from Canon EF 500/4 L IS to Canon EF 600/4 L IS II (review)

Ғылым және технология

I bought the EF 600mm f/4 L IS II in 2018 and it has been my most used lens for bird photography since. After several years of use and more than 100’000 pictures taken with it I thought it was time for a review of the lens where I can share my experiences with you. This review covers AF, image quality, image stabilization (IS) and the handling and costs of the lens.

I've just bought this 600mm - reviews like this helped me make my decision. I've been going to the gym 4 times a week for the last 6 months, so I think I'm just about good to hand hold this beast. After a year of hard training, I may not even need IS! Thanks again for this stellar review.

I have the exact same lens and love it, funnily enough I never use image stabilisation, it's always turned off. I made my own "soft" hood using some black yoga mat foam and it works a treat. Just got an R5 last week (from a 5D4) and so far great images, started doing more and more video, so feel I've got a great combo now...happy shooting !!!

Hi, I had a chance to compare 600 and 400/2.8 version III vs both of those lenses versions II, we did tests on canon 5DSR using a very detailed map. Can confirm there is no difference in sharpness in any configuration (with or without Tc’s)

Thanks for this, I am a Sony shooter and am interested (one day) in their 600/F4 G. This is also a little lighter at just over 3kg, so equivalent to the RF. I would be super interested to either see a video, or explanation on some of your long lens holding techniques, including for example how far you walk in any given session, the pitfalls and pluses of not using a tripod. Or if a dedicated video on the subject is too time consuming etc, just an overview comment on how you manage the lens, thanks for the video!

Thank you for the video. I also use a 600mm prime telephoto lens however; it’s a composite 600mm. That is; EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II + EF 2x III. I use it with Canon 1D Mark IV and very happy with the results as a pure hobbyist. The combo produces a focal length of 780mm. I always use the 4kg combo on a sturdy tripod or monopod. And yes, I also replaced the original lens foot with a black Wimberley grooved foot that slides directly into the tripod head. It's so much more convenient and safe. Certainly solid super telephoto lenses are superior to composite setups like mine but, I have to keep portability in mind. I can easily carry my lens, camera and extender separately in my Lowepro camera bag to take it to distant places. The image quality drop caused by the extender is not noticeable to common viewers' eyes. For bird flight shots; I use 7D + EF 400mm f/5.6L always handheld. Thanks again.

The 600mm F4 mk2 has been my main birding lens for the past 4 years. I couldn't fault it at all. However, my copy was 9 years old and I was it's 2nd owner. The EF mount is now obsolete and should it breakdown for any reason spares are probably unavailable too. I decided to sell the lens while it was still functional and I was able to get a good price for it. As long as you don't mind hauling 4.5kg of lens around it's a truly superb bit of kit.

Hi Fabien. I'm looking to buy the 500 f4 mki for my R7. Do you think it's still good in 2022 with R cameras? I'm looking to buy it for 2700 usd used. It's about the max I can afford so it's pretty much this or nothing for me. If it's not good enough especially with the 1.4x I don't mind sticking to zooms too much, but I would really like all the advantages a prime gives. What do you think? Thanks a million

  • @FabianFoppNaturephotography

The Quality is still very good, even though with the converter you can sometimes see a small drop. The main benefit of the v2 ist the better stabilization, better AF and less weight. But if you shoot with fast shutter speed or often from a tripod I think it’s still a very good lens which can provide really nice backgrounds

@@FabianFoppNaturephotography Thanks a lot, much appreciated. If I had the disposable income the ii would probably be a pretty smart purchase, since they don't lose value over time anyway. I don't unfortunately. being a university student. I think I will do like you and get the v1 and expect a solid 5+ years out of it on the R7 until my studies are done and I have a steady job and disposable income. For me it's either that or just keep using only my zooms, which wouldn't be the end of the world either. But if it's at least better than what I have now and I can sell later down the line, it would be nice to have a prime in the kit to push my photography further. I think I'll take the plunge. I have the same lens it's great but there's no way I could hand hold it for much time without major fatigue. Instead I use a military double harness flag pole holder with a PMG Monopod on a Wimberley Mono gimbal which allows me to basically hand hold this lens all day long with no fatigue and rock-solid stable while being mobile and allowing me to get great in flight shots just like hand holding. Without this set up I probably would not use this lens. If you get on your belly in the mud I would say this wouldn't be the best setup for that but getting down on one knee or sitting it's fine. I also use dove tails with RRS quick release so that I can change over quickly to a car mount or to a tripod which I rarely use anymore. I did have to fix the lens hood since the c-clips in the cover will pop off if you hit it hard or drop it. Mine came off the tripod where this happened. I just found the right size C-Clip and fixed it myself & I agree they need to improve it.

Haha, also a good point. I can save a gym membership. To your question: I think this is highly user-dependent. @@escapestudy2212yes I think 1/200 is the lowest for my 600mm II lens and my R6. Any lower and it’s much more likely to get shake. And this is also with my 1.4 extender III and 1/200 is awesome. It’s a fantastic lens. I love it. It’s just also frustrating because I can get some amazing shots with it, but I have missed a lot also if I have to jump on the ground or a flight shot happens. So I do sometimes miss the handholding the smaller lenses. I do one the 100-500L but once you get used to the beautiful backgrounds of the big lenses it gets ugly using anything else for birds. For big game or flight shots the f 7.1 aperture is fine but for songbirds the zoom is a crappy lens if you are really picky like me.

@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife I have actually never used a tripod. I am a massage therapist XD I do get tired eventually, but my endurance with it has been pretty good. Every pound makes a huge overall difference in the total force placed upon the glenohumeral joint, radioulnar joint, and the strain of the rotator cuff. To minimize this force, I just try to hold the lens with my non-dominant hand as far to the front of the lens as possible. I found that when I try to hold it at the center, the force it exerts on my joints is considerable over time.

@@OhhhBugger thank you. Yeah it can be brutal for me sometimes and I know I have to be careful. Sometimes I will hook the lens plate on my belt for support and then do quick hand hold shots. It does get uncomfortable sometimes though. I used to own the old 500mm f 4.5 lens and it was a lot more freeing to hand hold. I am seriously considering a 300mm 2.8 with extenders or a 500 just to be able to better run and gun. I do miss shots sometimes as I know we all do but I know it’s easier to get into position when you are more handheld.

@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife I hear ya man. I have considered selling the 500mm and buying the RF 100-500 just for the weight difference. Of course, the amount of light is tremendously different, and extenders seem like they are kind of a bad idea, (though people keep telling me otherwise). I just can't imagine working at F10-F14. That seems super limiting to me.
