Why I Had To Bail On A Scottish Mountain!!

Why I Had To Bail On A Scottish Mountain!!
So this was my first time in Scotland, I changed my plans last minute to hike Ben Narnian / Ben Ime and camp on one of the summits. I was really looking forward to going and don't get me wrong I still had a fantastic few days there!!
The weather leading up to my trip was really bad up there and I came to a part of the hike that I really was not happy with, especially with the heavy camping pack on my back, where I had to scramble up a gully with very slippery rock surfaces.
This just shows how beneficial research is when you plan a wild camp especially in an unfamiliar area. I should have also not changed my plans the night before I went up to Scotland and stuck with my original plans.
But, its still all good fun, part of the adventure and you live and learn by making these mistakes.
Thanks so much for clicking on my video and watching and hope you still enjoy the views and what I managed to put together to make this video.
Take care everyone and stay safe.
Chris 👍😊

Hi Chris having done that route straight up Ben Narnain from Arrochar it is a right old slog..there is a slightly different route to the chimney we took to climb the spearhead but still none the less you have to be extremely careful..which ever route there's some proper hands on climbing mate & it's one to take seriously.. The right decision though to turn back, it's a good trate to have in the mountains to know you're limits & to know when it's no longer safe for you're self..amazing summits though mate, we climbed narnain then along to beinn ime & camped there.. Second night we went along to ben vane which is no easy route either.. Proper mountains them up there Chris but I'm sure next time you attempt it you'll be prepared more for what's to come & what to expect.. Stay safe pal.. Andy.

Hi Andrew... THANK YOU so much for watching my video 😃🙏🏼 Not my usual content like but thought id stick it up anyway to show how its not all a smooth ride lol. That is very helpful thanks so much!! I dont mind a scramble and have done some hairy ones over the years lol, but not with a camping pack on, felt a bit weary with the added weight, being on my own on a new mountain and didnt like the fact I kept slipping back down. Thought 'what if its worse further up and how would I get back down etc'. Just didnt feel happy so glad you agree with my decision. I will return there very soon and do the summits just as a day hike, sus out the area a bit more then head back with the tent another time. Maybe camp on or near Beinn Ime hopefully. My usual spots I know pretty well really over the years from day hikes etc or at least the area so think I tried to throw to much in my first time there haha. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and leaving me a great and helpful comment 😃👍🏻👍🏻 Take care pal and hope you enjoy the coming weekend 😊 ATB... Chris

Yeah Scotland was amazing and still had another 3 great days wondering about there after this, just didnt film snd especially after my media mod broke 😒 Yeah like I said to a few others, ive done much worse scrambles before but just wasnt happy with this one and didnt like the fact I kept slipping down from my body height, nothing to place your feet or hands onto. But, ill be back for sure!! Sorry this video was a bit of a different one lol but if you get time check out my St Sunday Crag summit camp, that was a great camp that 👌🏻👌🏻 THANK YOU so much for watching, your time is always appreciated and I really hope you start to feel better soon. Haha I was actually going to just camp on the hill where the clouds came in, looking back I prob should have. But at the time I was annoyed I didnt get to the summit I wanted and felt like I was doing it more for a video and not to enjoy it at the time. I did have another 3 days there and really enjoyed it just didnt film anymore, especially after my media mod breaking and having no wind protection. Ah such a bummer mate but as everyone is saying, you just can't take chances especially in areas you don't know. The hills will still be there next time and it will make the reward all the sweeter! I don't know that part of Scotland terribly well (I'm from Aberdeenshire but stay in NW England now) but I know enough to know that living to fight another day is always the best approach! I don't know the gully you referred to, but the consequences of a slip up there of any kind and having to arrange a rescue (if you can!) doesn't bear thinking about! You'll smash the next one back north! Looking forward to it already! 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The mountains aren't going anywhere mate, sometimes you just need to take the L and leave it for another day. Been a few times now me and the girlfriend have had to make the frustrating decision to bail on a climb or a camp because it just doesn't seem safe or sensible. Live to fight another day, especially being on your own there's always that added risk of something happening and nobody being there to help. Also, if you get the chance get yourself planned up to do the West Highland Way, I just completed it a couple of weeks ago, brilliant experience and will definitely make you fall in love with Scotland 😍

Hi Chris I dont think it was a fail or even anything went wrong because you left the mountain in the same condition you went. Its difficult sometimes to acknowledge what the best decisions might be especially if your looking forward to something but you didnt force a camp for the sake of doing it and you showed great maturity in weighing up the situation and giving yourself time to make a decision. This was just a recce for a future camp and some good hill work for the legs, good job buddy.

Yeah was gonna camp on that area where the clouds were coming in but felt like I was more doing it for a video not for myself in the end. Hey Chris👋 absolutely you made the right decision, no question. It's all an adventure, until it isn't, and these places are to be treated with respect. Especially when you were on your own. We really respect you for making that call, it came across on the video you were conflicted about it and it must have been a hard decision to make given it was your first time in Scotland and you would have really wanted to press on and explore, but it's always there for another day when you feel sure of your route etc. We were up in Scotland a month or so ago and we underestimated the time it would take to hike up Beinn Bhreac, it was only a Graham but as you say there were no paths so it made it really hard going on uneven ground, and not the place to turn an ankle! We made it back down with just enough light but it did teach us a lesson on hiking in Scotland. We still really enjoyed this video as always, a bit different, and our fails make the wins all the sweeter!😊👏. Hope you have had a great weekend, Shell and Pete

Sorry for the long reply, another one where KZread gave me no notification 🙄 Yeah thanks for agreeing with my decision, as I said if I had of just had a day pack on id have continued up no worries, ive done much worse scrambles before, but not with a camping pack on. Didnt like the fact there were no notches or anything to put your hands or feet on and I kept slipping back down. I found out from someone else who has done the route a few times that it gets worse too and propper hands on so glad I was sensible. Which is definitely what you need to be in the mountains. I shall be back 100% I have quite a few plans now in Scotland but I shall do some day hikes to sus the areas out more first then go back with the tent. Thanks mate glad you agreed with my decision 👍🏻 Like I said to a few others I have sone much worse scrambles before but just didnt feel happy with this one, and didnt like it that I kept sliding back down to. Best to be sensible in the mountains, but I shall return to these summits and now with a plan! Thanks for watching as always Peter your time is always appreciated pal 🙏🏼😊👍🏻💯 ATB... Chris ✌🏼

Looks like a wise decision Chris. Always go with your gut instinct and turn back if it doesn’t feel right. Those Scottish mountains certainly looked epic though. The mist rolling in and out was very atmospheric

Yeah I think so too mate, just didnt like the fact that I kept sliding down, wouldn't want to do that further up the gully lol. It was so lovely there though and even though I didnt film the other days I have definitely found some plans for next time so I shall be much more prepared. The mountand mist was very atmospheric indeed 😊 👌🏻 Thanks for watching and the comment Anthony. Hope you're well... Chris ✌🏼

Beinn Ime gives a nicer view for wild camping, in my opinion, if you are back up this way again. It plateaus out a little before the summit and gives plenty of flat ground to choose from. All the best.

Hi! Ahhh that is brilliant thank you so much!! I definitely have plans to return, maybe hit the summits on a day hike and find myself a little plan then go back with the tent. Beinn Ime sounds like a good shout then for sure. Thank you so much for watching and leaving me the comment, your time is honestly really appreciated 🙏🏼 ATB.... Chris ✌🏼

Chris a good thing about these videos is it can teach valuable lessons to those new to wild camping or those who don't know the area. Before I go to an area I look on Google earth to see if there are other tracks to a particular spot made by humans or sheep. O/S maps never show such tracks so it's always worth a look. I would have taken off my backpack and attempted to scramble up an look for an alternative route but is easy to say sitting on the couch watching your video on TV. I wonder if crampons may have made a difference? Your goal was to reach the summit but much of the scenery at that elevation was awesome and a suitable spot anywhere would have done me. Stay safe and until your next adventure atb Taff 🤠👊

Turning back is always the correct decision if it don’t feel right Chris👍. I had a similar dilemma on my ascent to Ben Narnain last September. Nearly turned back due to strong winds but made it in the end. I’m guessing the gully you mentioned was on the Spearhead ascent? ATB Dave

In situations like this there is always that battle of should I, or shouldn't I and usually the latter wins. Sometimes you just don't feel it and need to restock and have a think. If the decision was right for you, then it's the correct decision, it's that simple. Maybe you could have set up camp down by the loch there or somewhere close by and still have a couple of days wild camping, was that not an option for you? The mountains will be there next time, so hopefully you'll get to go. I hope to go myself next year, probably April/ May, all being well. Cheers Chris, happy hiking!

Hi mate... yeah as I said if id have had a day pack on id have just carried on. But didnt like the fact I kept slipping back down and found out from someone who has done the route a few times is gets worse and more hands on. So glad I thought sensibly. Thanks for watching and your comments mate 🙏🏼😊👍🏻 Chris

Definately made the correct decision there Chris...Ignore your Gut at your peril.....If you are not familiar with the terrain and especialy scrambling then it can be much more dificult to descend and more dangerous the higher you go....i made these mistakes many time in my younger years but i have got much wiser as i have aged and not got any where near the amount of endurance i had in my 30s. Great views though, thanks for your entertainment.

Thanks! So glad you agree 🙏🏼 Definitely best to go with your instinct, and if you're not happy with your route ir anything on it then its best not to do it. Especially in an unfamiliar area on your own etc. Yeah thats what I was thinking I didnt know if it would get worse the more elevation I did. I shall be back though 💯% Thanks for watching and leaving me the comment 😃😊👍🏻 Glad you enjoyed it... ATB... Chris ✌🏼

I always try to cross reference metoffice every few hours or so as you can see last minute updates, but when you get so high up nothing is reliable lol, i see so many videos on here of wild campers waking up to whiteouts, its almost the norm haha

It sure is but definitely better to not push on if you aren't happy with your route or something. I just didnt like the fact that I kept sliding back down, wouldn't have wanted that to happen further up haha. Was annoyed cus I didnt get to the summits I wanted to camp on so camping down on that mound I was on wouldn't have felt the same. Then with the weather coming in I thought ill just go down. Had a great few more days there though after this one 👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and the comment 😀 😊
