The Shetland Islands | Exploring Unst, Yell & Mainland | by Landrover Defender Camper

Join me on an incredible journey through the Shetland Islands, traveling across the stunning landscapes and exploring Unst, Yell, & Mainland in my converted Landrover Defender camper truck. This adventure, takes in breathtaking scenery, and takes a peek into the unique culture and history of the UK's northernmost islands.
If you are thinking about visiting shetland. you start by getting the Ferry from Scotland. I travelled with the Northlink ferry company. And sailed from Aberdeen, 14hrs to Lerwick. This is an overnight ferry. And I would suggest you plump for a cabin and pay that little extra to relax in the Magnus lounge.
Starting in Unst the northernmost inhabited island of the U.K. This is where the Norse heritage really comes to life.I get to see the most northerly house in the U.K, The famous Bobby's bus shelter, and the Viking Skidbladner longboat. The beautiful landscape takes in a number of standing stones, such as the Lund stone and Uyea breck. I visit Muness Castle. The final defence ... or first! for the U.K. Unst is also home to the Saxa Ford space port and Unst Heritage Centre. Oh! and of course the famous Shetland ponies.
The Island of Yell, is a completely different vibe.known for its rolling hills, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. West Sandwick Beach is a beautiful sandy beach perfect for a relaxing stroll or a picnic. Keep an eye out for seals basking on the shore. The Gloup Memorial is A poignant memorial to a fishing disaster, located near a dramatic sea gorge. I also find The White Wife of Queyon. This is a ship figurehead erected as a memorial, overlooking the waters of Mid Yell Voe.An absolute must is to visit Windhouse. These are ruins of, supposedly the most haunted house on Shetland. Said to be one of the oldest inhabited houses in Shetland.
The mainland of shetland with its Capital Lerwick. This is the more cosmopolitan of the 3 islands. with all of the amenities, travel links and entertainment. The island is a mix of old and new but still gives you the feeling you are miles from anywhere. if you dare to drive across the main runway of the airport. you will be greeted by Scatness Broch. The Iron Age village and the jewel of the island...Jarlshof. which is a Prehistoric and Norse Settlement. An extraordinary archaeological site showcasing over 4,000 years of human history, from the Bronze Age to the Viking era. A must on your bucket list of sites to see, if you love your pre history.
I visit Scalloway Castle. The ruins of a 17th-century castle, once the home of Earl Patrick Stewart. The nearby Scalloway Museum offers more historical insights.but was closed when I was there.
I did this trip in my converted Landrover defender camper. This was the perfect vehicle for this type of trip.
So why Shetland? The Shetland Islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage. From the dramatic cliffs of Unst to the tranquil beaches of Yell and the historical sites of the Mainland, each island has its own charm and stories to tell. I've been lucky enough to travel around the world and visit many wonderful places. However. seldom do I take a really good look at what is in my back yard. Well I am trying to change that narrative. and I'm really glad Im doing that! The Shetland island has one major draw... a trick up its sleeve. And that.... is the people. This group of islands has the most kind, helpful, and supportive people I've ever met! and I will return. For now though. come with me and explore.......The Shetland Islands!

Great video, visited last year, such a beautiful place, just remember good walking shoes and waterproofs - you’re good to go. On the ferry we had a pod, it was cheap, quite comfortable and offers a degree of privacy, also access to private showers, it’s a good option if you want to travel cheaper.
