Speaking of the origin of things related to baseball, it turns out the High Five was a surprisingly recent invention and was at the least popularized, if not invented, by the only Major League Baseball player to openly admit he was gay during his playing years. For more on this fascinating story and the momentous impromptu high-five that aired on national TV, see our video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYuo2aZ_pbXMk5M.html -Daven

As a family member of Abner Doubleday I can openly admit that Abner Doubleday did not invent baseball it just became popular during the civil war at camp Doubleday a civil war camp. When shoulders went to other camps and played the game they would remark I learned it at Camp Doubleday. Several letters from camp Doubleday also mention learning the game at camp Doubleday.

now that makes quite a bit of sense Joshua Doubleday / including how rapidly the sport could spread via war camps, much like it did to Japan during WWII. Your family should step forward with some solid research about any connection Abner had with Baseball. You know we all want Truth, Justice and the American Way💪🏼🇺🇸⚾️

I read once that Doubleday wrote a standard set of baseball rules for the men in his division to use. The game was played by diffent rules in different states, which caused arguments and fights, bad for discipline. So he standardized the rules to prevent conflicts. But still there should be some documentation.

When the kids come home from school and spout a history nugget they learned in school and I say it's not actually correct, they look at me like I have three heads. Then we look it up and Bolivar brass they go back and discuss this with class and teacher. Then told they have to learn it wrong because that's the standard curriculum. I just tell them to spit back that info for the test but know it's not true. Just smile and wave boys, just smile and wave😅😅 The teachers are impressed but have to teach what they are given. Sad.

Quality correction history lesson. I'd heard of the Hoboken games as organizing modern baseball rules but a simple evolution of old stick ball games makes sense. Quite impressed with an earlier Comment by Abner's descendent Joshua Doubleday who revealed his ancestor may have simply received credit since soldiers said they learned the game at Camp Doubleday. Makes too much sense. ❤️⚾️🇺🇸

Baseball became very popular during the civil war. Both union and conderate soldiers played them while at camp and out in the field. I don't know why this is never mentioned. Oh, and if you study the civil war you will find out that Doubleday was not a skilled General or looked up to. He did do a decent job at Gettysburg when he took over after General Reynolds was killed in the morning of the first day.

@Diogenes D'Sinope The same can be said for literally any large group of people who believe anything that could have disastrous consequences if you don't listen to them. It's simple, really... you ask yourself, is this true? Yes or no. Can it be proven? Yes or no. What is the result if true and what is the result of false? Oh look, global warming would have THE most disastrous consequences, IS provable but humanity's involvement can also be seen if you look from the right direction, so you might as well stop trying to apply any time or effort in deciding whether or not it is true, because if it's NOT true then okay but if it IS true then OH BOY so you better just start working on a fix. Same thing with hell and any religion. ad infinitum.

While Baseball may have been an adaptation of the UK game rounders, there was an attempt to import the newer American version. Indeed, in the area where it was played the modern football (soccer), stadium was named The Baseball Ground, in Derby , England, and was the home of Derby County Football Club, up to the early 2000's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_Ground Although I have never visited the US, I have played both rounders (when young) and baseball, over a number of years when older.

Oooooooh! I have to call you out on poor researching or just miss speaking. Invented in 1839 2:33 but you mentioned 1939 to 1941 2:57 I thought as getting older that my ears and memory were going bad. I guess my senses are still working good for me. Poor research or just miss speaking as all current politicians do? Reference, 2:33 and 2:57 Don't worry Sir, just some good natured ribbin' as we call it here in the states. 😁 I always thought that baseball was stolen from the UK's sport of cricket.

Baseball evolved from a sport could Stool ball played in Curch Yards in England this was transported to America New York City in particular the first set of rules of the game of what we know as Baseball today where could The New York Baseball Rules that is still the base for the rules used today. Baseball was not invented like most sports it evolved from a more bssic form of the game. So basically Baseball has it's roots in The Church of England If you want to look at the true starring point for the game.

At least your favorite minor league team didn't change their name to something stupid like in the case of the Jacksonville Suns, now known as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. And be glad you don't have to be a fan of the Miami Marlins, something I don't say too proudly as that is one trying team to follow.

Coming from the Cooperstown area, any thing but the Doubleday story is wrong because pretty much the majority of our areas economy is from tourists for the hall of fame, and the area's baseball "camps" for kids.

Because "Adam Ruins Everything" is generally about revealing the more complicated truth behind simple myths, including the very common "This makes us feel good about something in history" variety. This show is usually broader trivia.

And basketball and football are not unique inventions- they are merely versions of soccer because they are both played with a ball... The logic behind this premise is pretty weak. It’s silly to think that something can’t be an entirely new concept simply because it has influences. The Earth is a very old place- and many ideas are very old. It doesn’t mean that nothing new has ever been invented just because other vaguely similar ideas had already existed. But it is super popular these days to undermine anything America and the United States itself, so we shouldn’t really be allowed to have anything or get credit for anything. After all, we invented slavery, colonization, settlersplaining, fascism, tyranny and Twitter. So yeah, we should shut up, U.S.! We are a terrible country! Just ask all those amazing, well-governed, peaceful, prosperous counties in Europe! They sure showed us!

The idea of Baseball originated as a stickball game played among kids in any open area or rural field in the Caribbean between the late 1500s and mid 1600s as a form of entertainment to spend time playing in groups with other kids where exactly well is either in the dominican republic or cuba we still argue were it started first but is definitely one of those 2 countries. then after the idea was discovered by white American tourist it was brought back to the states to find investors to regulated and organized into leagues with some clubs in the US to make money out of it as family entertainment past time and recreation........

Now we have confirmed baseball is just British school childrens game Rounders, can we also let the yanks know that Basketball is just the schoolgirls game Netball and the Hosers have merely turned the British schoolgirls Jolly Hockeysticks game into Ice Hockey (but with the ludicrous amounts of armour much like American "football" is a very poor rip off of rugby, only with loads of protection gear and 10 seconds of game with 1 hour of advert breaks).
