A Genius Among Us
• A Genius Among Us
In this video:
U.S. Presidents and sports have always been connected. Gerald Ford played football as a University of Michigan undergrad. George H.W. Bush played in the first two College World Series. George W. Bush was part owner of the Texas Rangers’ baseball franchise. Barack Obama frequently plays pickup basketball games with his staff (no doubt all terrified of accidentally hurting the Commander-in-Chief during the games.) Heck, Ronald Reagan even portrayed “The Gipper” in the football movie Knute Rockne, All American during his acting days. But only one U.S. President was ever a professional athlete, albeit for a very brief time. Evidence points to Dwight D. Eisenhower having played semi-pro minor league baseball in 1911 in Junction City, Kansas. Although for much of his life, this was something he chose to keep secret. Had he not in the first few years after he did this, it would have changed the course of American history.

Everyone else seems to have the mispronunciations well in hand, so I'll focus on a factual error: "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is not a Hall-of-Famer.

Yep, no Hall of Fame. He's from my hometown, buried a mile from my childhood home. His grave is always covered with baseballs and bats from fans. He has a museum, a statue, a memorial baseball park near where he played milltown ball, and hundreds of local fans who feel Joe did his best to make things right. But no, no Hall of Fame.

They met when he came home on leave, got engaged in letters, broke up in letters, and then got married when he came home for Christmas, lol. roger komula If you had any understanding of how actual war was conducted, you wouldn’t insult the rear echelon without knowing specific details. Yes, there have been some campaigns where frontline troops were not well supported, but zero support is never an option. Without command and control, logistics, intelligence, transport, administration, materiel, medical staff, and operational support, any unit over the size of a fire team would be utterly ineffective. Perhaps read some history.
after watching some Business Blaze videos: fancy language Simon
I knew this because Mike Rowe did an episode of “That’s the Way I Heard It!” On this very subject.
I about 1920 Ty Cobb came to Georgia and played in several exhibition games. For money if course. One of my grandfather's achievements in life was that he struck out Ty Cobb - twice. He had to finish raising his four sisters so he never tried out for professional baseball. But after he finished raising those girls (both his parents had died) he went to college, got his Ph.D, and became a Methodist minister. That's my baseball story.
There are worse secrets to reveal than, "I used to play professional baseball," and it's nice to think that was his most sordid secret.
Note that the primary industry in Junction City is the US Army. It's the town outside of the gate of Fort Riley.
I'd love to see you guys do an episode on one of your channels on the Negro Baseball League.

Could you do a video about the development of Cockney Rhyming Slang and how it went to influence language?
I'm thinking there is a major mistake in this video which I'm hoping someone can help me with in confirming starting at 2:11 ..... I think Simon has confused Junction City Kansas with Junction City Wisconsin when mentioning the intersecting railroads..... I know that Wisconsin Valley (also known later as Milwaukee Road) ran through Junction City Wisconsin along with the Soo Line. Looking further online it looks like the three railroads through Junction City Kansas were Kansas Pacific--the Union Pacific, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroad plus the Junction City and Fort Kearney railroad. I only say this is because Junction City Wisconsin is the next village over from where I live. Can anyone else confirm?
@HSMiyamoto
4 жыл бұрын
As noted by others below, TIFO confused Junction City, Wisconsin -- which really is place where two important railroads connect -- to Junction City, Kansas, which is named after the confluence of two rivers. Still, that should have been caught before recording, since Kansas and Wisconsin are different states, and it is unlikely that two railroads in Kansas would both bear the name of "Wisconsin." Rather like the likelihood that the Great Western Railway would have had tracks in East Anglia.
I kinda think he had some effect on American history anyway.

Wish it was him punching Bautista in the face. But let's take what we can get
Some (not really) necessary corrections: - Ronald Reagan played the (HARD G) Gipper in "Knute Rockne (pronounced rock knee), All-American". - Joe Jackson was banned from Major League baseball because of the 1919 Black Sox scandal. So, despite his immense talent, he's not in the HOF and never will be.
"Ronald Reagan even portrayed the Gipper in the football movie 'Knute Rockne All American.'" Gipper isn't pronounced with a J sound. Knute Rockne is pronounced NEWT rok-NEE.

Let's go win one for the Jipper!
"That's my secret" wow, okay
The guh guh gipper Knute Rockne (sounds like Newt Rock-knee)
A better question is what did they ask about amateur status in 1911? Jim Thorpe's troubles with the olympics were in 1912, but was there was concern in American college athletics before then?
After today I will not mention the way Simon pronounces things. As an American we can't expect everyone in the world say things the way we do. Hell, I have gotten use to the way people with British or Australian accents pronounces "H's" and "Z's" 😆😆😆😆
Simon, my man, it's Gipper, with a hard G, and Nute (noot), with a silent K. Carry on!

I know when he was a Colonel, he was assigned a motorized unit and it took over 6 months to go across the US's almost non-existent roadway network at the time. One of the main reasons the Interstate's now bear his name. And he wanted one of his secretaries to weed out the lesbians in the unit, only to find out that most of them were. Considering that they were a top-notch unit, the investigation didn't really go anywhere.
The man's knee got hit so many times 😯

We need to teach Simon how to speak American. Gipper - hard G, as is gap Knute - silent K Rockne - rock-knee

It's pretty sad that I lived in JC for 10 years and had no idea about any of this history.
I don’t know the rules that applied when Eisenhower was in college, but today NCAA rules make it clear amateur status is sport specific. Eisenhower did not play intercollegiate baseball, so his participation in football would not have violated that rule. A number of pro baseball players have had no problems later being on a college football team. A recent example is Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray who signed for $5 million in the Oakland A’s organization but after that played on the Sooners football team.
Canoot Rocknah. wow.
Eisenhower krabs: I love money
Kanute Rockna....lol
While many will claim that you mispronounced Knute in Knute Rockne, the fact is, you are correct....for the most part. Far too many, in fact, probably 95% believe it's pronounced, "Newt". The man's name was actually pronounced, "Kuh-newt", just as you said. The problem is, that when said correctly, the "K" almost disappears if you aren't listening intently. However, it is there and it is said.
