yup, that's how I always saw Iverson. They're both very exciting players, with relentless and amazing effort on the court but their inefficiency, ego and "risky" type of game made them very frustrating to watch sometimes. They're also the type of players that are very difficult to coach and they hinder the development of other players in the team.

His stats are very overrated, as soon as he had a coach that stood up to him and had him not shoot the ball 30 times a game he won a chip, only to return to that style of play that didn’t win, and then as soon as he stopped shooting the ball so many times with the lakers he again won a chip.

But you are correct that when he had a coach that actually knew how to coach and didn’t just say give the ball to wilt, he won. It’s no surprise that he was such a great passer he just didn’t do it bc it wasn’t asked of him. Wilt was far superior in Player efficiency than Iverson or Russ. Facts because Iverson just like Kemba was a Regular Season Choker for over 50% of his Career while Billups and Lowry both elevated their team's to the Playoffs when help was bought to them where as Iverson had Korver and Igludala and Kemba has had Dwight Howard, Tony Parker and Al Jefferson, Julius Randle and R.J Barrett and they still folded if Harden had all of those guys then he would've gotten those 76ers, Knicks and Hornets teams to the Playoffs every single year and would've averaged 30 or more in every single one of those Season's considering he would've been the only scoring threat on those teams he would've turned Steve Clifford into a Hall of Fame coach just with his Mentality, ego and willingness to do everything for his team to win.

Kyrie got the best handles but Kevin Durant is the second best with the crossover after Iverson. KD’s handles & crossover is so smooth & an underrated part of his game. I haven’t seen KD do a single crossover with the Nets, I think he’s not quick enough to do that anymore cause of the Achilles. The context of AI is fascinating. Super inefficient yet played on a team engineered to fit around him. All the rebounders and defensive specialists he played with mitigated AI's poor rate stats. But stylistically AI was unique and highly influential so in that sense his career is remembered differently than it would be if he wasn't so fly. AI is the biggest paradox the NBA has ever seen. His effort and will during games was unparalleled outside of a few guys like MJ and Bird. But that didn't carry over to AI's off court habits. AI was also insanely durable and led the league in minutes for 7 seasons. But he hurt his team by playing so much that it cratered his efficiency. And then he broke down and was done basically overnight. For a guy who was probably 5'10'' in bare feet, his lack of serious injuries is unprecedented. So he didn't lose his skill because he blew out a knee or something. He just lost a half a step and that took away his ability to beat defenders off the dribble and he had no plan B. He never got better or added to his skill set. Yeah, the whole practice deal is a meme, but if AI had brought the same intensity to the off season he would've shot over 80% FTs and wouldn't have been such a trash long range shooter. Can you imagine how lethal The Answer would've been if he shot 40% from 3? It would've made his drives so much harder to defend. He had the perfect build for a perimeter scorer but his shot selection was like an interior scorer. His defensive tools were unreal and he was a steals machine but his gambling in passing lanes was a big negative. Great one on one defender, terrible team defender. Total paradox.

Maybe for spectator's but not hoopers. I played serious ball and when I watched AI, I put myself in the defender's place and I was thankful I never had to guard a guy that good. And I was a lockdown defender. I know that I'm right because when you listen to guys who ACTUALLY PLAYED AGAINST HIM and not just analyzed his stats, you hear the same thing I was thinking. Kobe, Chancey BIllups, Shaq, Grant Hill, Paul Pierce, and a ton of other dudes know. He was too quick, too good of a scorer, way too athletic, too good of a ball handler, too fast in the open court, played the passing lanes too well, too mentally tough and played too hard. When you play against a guy like that, as a defender, it hurts your offense and can hurt your mindset. People who've never played serious or high level ball don't really know that. It's like how people call John Stockton overrated but if you ask Gary Payton, he was to toughest challenge. The stuff you can't measure makes a huge difference. I've had conversation about this with a few NBA players (not about AI) and they've said the same thing. Basketball is a game of inches and there is a lot that you don't see or realize unless you are playing.

Any real basketball player that knows basketball will tell you that he was great but never a championship level player. “Hoopers” love him sure bc to hoopers it’s all about them. All about the shine and the fancy moves and selfish attitude. But real basketball players know that style of play isn’t conducive to winning titles or winning big in the playoffs. Yes his team were great supporting cast but there were other factors like his his teammates being way too young with not enough experience or were beyond there prime like Mutombo also this was the time centers still dominated yes he had talent on his teams like Kyle Korver, Andre Iguodala, jr smith, and Melo but this was late in his career sadly didn’t stay with any of those teams with them players. Yes he was inefficient but he was a great all-round players also he influenced the current modern pg and sg in the NBA. Many players like James harden and LBJ are very inefficient it got to the point where Collin sexton which has potential has a efficiency then Harden. In the history of the NBA no other NBA player maybe other then Hakeem Olajuwon has carried a team to the finals and won with no all stars and with above a 45 percent field goal. Even though Hakeem in my list is a top 3 center of all time his teammates were either in the primes or has some sort of experience. Most players y’all have as a legend has either the same problem or concept as AI but each of these legends have big influence and change how players play and maximize their potential.

@@letstalk140 The best thing for the NBA is for great players to play in great systems. Kobe couldn't win playing outside of Jackson's system. Jordan couldn't win outside of a system. A great system makes great players even better. San Antonio succeeded a lot because they played during the hero ball era. It was actually Dallas in 2011 that got back to free moving offenses of the 80s. Golden State put multiple great players in that kind of system and it was great to watch, but they didn't have real competition. The best thing for the NBA would be to have two teams with great players and great systems. That's what it was in the 80s with Lakers and Celtics, and we really haven't had that since. Jordan was able to bring the NBA to another level, because he was the best player in a great system.

He definitely wasn't anywhere near efficient back then.... he'd routinely score 30 while shooting 35 or 40 per cent

The early 2000’s was the a good era for power forwards. The problem with that era was everybody was trying to play hero ball and mimic Michael Jordan. It hurt nba at the time because there was less team ball, and everybody wanted to be by themselves. Tracy mcgrady left his cousin Vince carter. Allen iverson got jerry stackhouse out of the 76ers because he didn’t want to share the spotlight. Kobe Bryant basically got rid everybody on that early 2000’s laker team because he wanted to feel like Michael Jordan in 1988. Later on he found out that’s not what he wanted. Stephon marberry left the Timberwolves because he wanted more money. So the early 2000’s set the nba back as far as team ball. If you think about it, the blame is Michael Jordan.

I can’t even be mad at this video. Basketball Examined spoke facts as usual. I’m 25 and as a fan it’s educational to know your basketball idol flaws and shortcomings and I’m willing to accept them. But nonetheless good shit to basketball examined and good shit to A.I the Answer. 💯

You just said the majority of his jumpshots were off the dribble, meaning even if he got by a defender, I doubt it would be as open as you think. You also say he just tries “to break people’s ankles” im assuming you mean he wants to get past his defender which is pretty much what you’re supposed to do if you have the ball in your hands and you’re trying to score. So your argument seems to be a bit misled.

Alot of NBA players can score 25-30 a night if given then green light the shoot whenever every night. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll be efficient, effective, or insanely skilled. But I must say in the case of AI the lack of spacing and his height played a huge part for his inefficiency, but doesn't excuse the absurd volume shooting

I don’t think so because defenses will adapt soon and start defending them like a superstar, harder help defense and double teams. Putting their best defender on them. So they’d quickly become way more inefficient then AI was. Look at russel Westbrook in LA right now for example.

He shot 46% in Philly when he had Stackhouse and shot 46% in Denver with Melo, his low efficiency is due to being on a bad team, like Kobe a great 3pt shooter but his % doesn't reflect it because he took a lot at the end of the shot clock, same with AI after he pass it to everyone they give it back he got 5 seconds to shoot and only 6ft

@@minfamous5841Kobe also had poor shot selection. That’s what differentiated him from Jordan. Jordan created easier shots for himself, and Kobe would often settle for ridiculous shots.

I will say this. Iverson was very inefficient and I always said that he was overrated but you still have to look at the fact that he was under 6 feet tall and if he wasn't getting foul calls he wasn't really scoring around the rim.

He wasn’t even a legit 6 footer. He was probably more like 5’11’ at best. What he was doing in what was definitely to hardest era to score was extremely impressive. 1996-2004 (basically the good majority of Iversons prime) was the deadball era.

Stats dont always tell the complete story. Ai was the smallest guy by far in that first comparison with love,pierce,tmac and ray. Had iverson been at least 6’4 his percentages would of been better....maybe not much better..but definitely better.

Check your facts buddy, that practice sound bite was created to label him as selfish and not a team player because he had that hood image that the league didn't approve of. Listen to the full video, he was upset that his friend died and they lost the game and they kept asking him about a practice that he missed. He changed the game in a way that they could not control. He looked like us. Young, Black, Tatts, Cornrolls. That thug image they didn't want to represent the NBA

@@georgescott6317 then reread the argument and try again cause you didn’t mention his ego once, just that the nba saw him as a threat to their image, which is true but not even fucking close to the point of “he wouldve done so much better without that ego” and how powerful the ending of this video is AI is a fantastic player who moved the nba forward socially, but not because of his basketball career, which was held back by his ego

I detest his fans. The vast majority of em all cling onto this false belief that AI is somehow a top 3-4 SG of all time, but that couldn’t be more far from the truth. As a matter of fact, many of them hate harden and even wade purely because they’re better basketball players

Being undersized at the SG position can hinder your efficiency a lot also. Arguably 6’0 at best. Average height at the SG position 6’6 right?

I feel like he is underrated because everyone acts like he is not that good. Boy is the truth, he overcame so much and was the most dangerous at his size. Kobe didn’t even want to go head to head with him. Kobe said it. All I’m saying, stats won’t tell the tale of how lethal and how hard it was to stop him. He beat the 3 peat lakers at home in the finals by himself. Also, made the world have a better crosser over. He is underrated because of his shot percentage is all they look at and don’t respect his greatness. AI, the unsung goat we all pass over. He’s my guy with Kobe and bron. Anyone plays with those garbage 76er teams he was on and you would have to volume shoot to get you to the finals... no one else takes that team to the finals and beats Kobe and Shaq at home. AI is always slept on
