The only thing I would contest is this: All-NBA and MVP have different criteria. If I were a voter, I would emphasize team value more in MVP, because that’s the established precedent, and individual production in all-NBA. It’s the same reason KD and Steph could easily miss the top 5 in MVP voting while together, yet both be first team all-NBA.

When it comes to the inconsistent ballots (PG13 2nd in MVP to Giannis but on 2nd Team NBA), the voters may be saying that KD and Curry are better than those who got the MVP votes, but because they played with each other that canceled out potential MVP votes. Bill Simmons said something similar on his podcasta fee months ago, it was something like Kyle Lowry could be 3rd in MVP voting but not make an All-NBA team. He might not be one of the six best guards, but he is so valuable to the Raptors he would get those votes. It comes down to there not being a consistent definition of "Valuable."

@@BasketballExaminedI would potentially be okay with it, but I don't think that it would ever happen. If it were to happen it would probably happen with the Center position cause there's only one per Team. Say the nuggets win 67-70 games and are the 1 seed in the west. Jokic puts up good numbers, but Embiid beats him in ever major statistical category. Jokic gets the MVP nod because Denver's system runs through him, but Embiid has the better individual season so he gets the 1st Team Vote. I would be okay with that situation.

airplaneoverthesemen Zach Lowe writes a piece every year on his ballot. I don’t read every writers articles, but a lot of these guys actually write articles or do a rundown of their ballots on podcasts. I was kind of annoyed he put some of the people he did in the video, because Zach, Bill, Bontemps, Beck, among others absolutely talk about who they pick and why, are knowledgeable about the game, and take their votes very seriously. I don’t think enough research was put into this video.

Hunter King I do agree that including those names and highlighting the other side could have made this video more comprehensive, but I think the point he was trying to make was that voters who are not taking the voting process seriously need to be exposed and held accountable. Which I do agree with as well and I think is more urgent than giving credit to the responsible ones (although they should be much appreciated).

Great video! Regarding All-NBA vs MVP voting, I think this can be explained in two ways: 1. People view MVP voting as different criteria from All-NBA. 2. They realize that only the first two votes for MVP really matter. Otherwise, totally legit complaints, imo.

Great vid. A solution the NBA could consider is to have a yearly review of all voters ballots to identify inconsistencies. And should there be repeat offences the voting rights are stripped

Indeed. At least since the change in eligibility requirements for voters to exclude local broadcast sports commentator folks, bc bias concerns. The voters often don't watch the games and/or are just media personalities, so one can't expect they've watched smaller market teams play at all outside of highlight clips and they get their info from staff/analysts and the stats. Not watching the players in games, a lot is lost that the old eyeballs observe beyond the aggregate statline. That is my worthless opinion and I haven't kept up, but last I did, I found the Player's Choice Awards to best reflect the realities.

Here’s the thing about MVP and All NBA teams not being consistent. MVP is based off of individual stats and team record. So while Damian Lillard may be considered the third in MVP voting but on the second team, the Blazers record boosts his MVP odds.

A lot of these are outrageous like Kyrie for all defense but the mvp voting is weird too, like some people picked the best players on the best teams and others just picked the 5 best players

When you watch first take SAS does this especially when he was exposed a couple years ago when the question of who was better in their first 95 games Kawhi Leonard or Kobe Bryant. The numbers clearly favored Leonard but SAS completely disregarded the question for the resume debate.

You know Kobe started in the 90s when the scores in game was about 80-90 and played defense. Kobe made all-star team in his rookie year.

Some of these voters are wild. I don’t mind them pushing the limits at times but that is only ok if they do not affect the players’ salaries. The fact that these terrible votes can influence a player’s contract is absolutely terrible.

I understand that your whole premise is that if a voter selects 5 players for the MVP you want to see them all in 1st or 2nd team all-NBA regardless of position. The one thing people would contest in your approach is that you put equal weight on 1st Team voting and MVP voting. People might argue these two have different criteria. Call it recency bias or voter’s fatigue or ‘small market teams not getting enough coverage or exposure’.. For example, Gasol won DPOY in the past without being selected to 1st team all-defense. *Yes, that was inconsistent as well.*

I think the main problem here is 2 fold. 1. The definition of value is completely different on who you ask. People say someone like Draymond is a very valuable player while playing 3rd of 4th fiddle on a team. Meanwhile Devin Booker is the only reason the Suns werent this years Warriors team. 2. Some of these guys are very biased. Chicago reporter voting in a Chicago guy, Spurs reporter voting in the Spur, and an OKC reporter voting in a Thunder player. I think they need to remove voters who have shown biases so there can be a more fair vote.

The mvp and 1st team bit can make sense depending on how you view mvp, being more valuable doesn't mean had a better season in some people's eyes

It's funny because I watched this video and felt like disagreeing with you but it's so good and so true that I really can't criticize it. I believe this is a system that can be improved easily with your points, but we will always question choices and I always will want those questionable choices at times. Like everyone who did homer picks of players they write for, should be given a benefit of a doubt because they're there all the time and may see things we don't, and they also may not see the "top picks". And I use those air quotes because on the other hand, A LOT of these writers get there picks from calling other writers who are more knowledgeable (Re: Rob Lowe has admitted doing this). I'm certainly not excusing actions, I come back to the original point that this can be improved, BUT I don't think it will ever work a 100% and nor would I want it to. I'd personally like 98% accurate, but not in the sense where Jordan Bell gets a spot, but in the sense with an AZ writer chooses Devin Booker.

Past award winners and All-NBA/Defense Team members should be the voters. They could do like a random draw so there wouldn't be too many voters. I'm sure they'd be happy to do it and would actually know what they're doing.
