Why a Limited Slip Diff should be your cars first modification !

Its time for the next modification to my Mini R59 JCW Roadster. This time I am going to replace the differential. Questions is though...what is a limited slip diff, how do they work, how do they improve the car, which type should I buy and how are they made ?
I was invited to Quaife, specialist diff and gearbox manufacturers, for the tour of they factory and to find answers to all of my questions.
Thanks to Quaife and Lohen Mini for arranging the visit.

Did research on this and went with one. Haven’t put it in yet. March will be replacing the clutch with performance one, seals etc…. Will do sc service not just the oil. 15% pulley , cam upgrade , cam chain, balancer , gaskets & seals. Bigger aired intercooler too & more. With that I decided on an LSD and was told about these. Seem to be above the rest. Can’t wait for the results !

I recently fitted one of these to my Mini when I replaced my clutch. Hands down the best mod I’ve done. Expensive if fitting on its own but if you fit it at the same time as a clutch (as I did) it was only an extra hours labour. Lohen fitted a TTV Racing clutch to my car at the same time and it is completely transformed. Rather than understeer, you can feel the car pulling you round corners. It’s ace!!!

I bought a mapped E92 330d a couple of years ago (still own it) which has a lot of torque. Great car but let down by serious traction loss, especially in the wet. A quick visit to birds the bmw specialist and a few hours later I got it back with a quaife atb. What a transformation! Anyway, great to see the factory and the manufacturing process that made my LSD. Thanks.

I can really understand the safety aspect of having one now, especially with as much as my roadster seems to just slip and stall while trying to turn from a side road onto a more heavily traveled road and having to do so quickly (blind spots and all due to terrain and vegetation)

I put a Quaife LSD in my Merkur XR4Ti. What impressed me the most, was how when I would take corners, the inside rear tire, would squeal ever so slightly because it would drag the tiniest bit. I was able, because of this, to corner much much better. Of course my 0-60 time increased greatly and my 60ft time dropped by quite a good margin as to be expected but I never expected the handling to improve as drastically as it did. It was as if the car wasn’t just driving on rails, but GLUED to the rails. Best diff company in the world hands down is Quaife.

I added a Quaife ATB LSD to my '13 Focus ST about 5 years ago. The big plus is it nearly eliminates the prominent torque steer that the stock car has. It definitely helps put the power down on the pavement too. Pulling through corners is much smoother and less hair-raising. It was well worth the money and if I had to choose between the LSD and the MP-275 tune, I'd have to pick the differential.

It was designed just like the diff you are showcasing here. Your segment showing the color-coded demo was brilliantly explained. No I get how the torque is sent across to the non-slipping axle. Totally transformed the car's cornering hability improving the traction. Night and day. In every fwd turbo car, this has to be standard from factory in my opinion. If the car doesn't come with one, you'll waste lots of power in the corners.

Cool vid Pedro!!! I didn't know you were a CNC (cushy 'n' clean) guy originally. I've messed about with friction differentials on RC cars for decades, they're way less complex than geared diffs! But yes, an LSD is something that will make your car acceleryate faster and help you drive safer. Lowering a car won't make it noticeably faster, though you might save fuel, bigger wheels only make it slower and use more fuel (they're heavier and any increase in tyre circumference ups the gearing), so a limited slip diff is a really logical addition that almost no-one thinks about!

I fitted one this year on my dear 306 S16 which I've had since 2003. It has had quite a lot of suspension upgrades, KW Variant 2 coilovers, Peugeot Sport GrpN wishbones, torsion bars, rear beam mountings and engine mounts. It has been fun to drive both on the track and on twisty roads - last year I fitted semi slicks on lightweight wheels and felt that they were a major upgrade.. well the diff I fitted this summer was the cherry on top of the cake. Of course - every upgrade supports each other but the diff made it like completely a different car.

it sure is for me and it is probably the only car I own which I am never going to sell. I dailydrive a mk2 Audi TT 3.2 which has some minor suspension upgrades (H&R springs and Powerflex black series bushes) but still when there is a trackday I will most likely take the S16 out rather than the TT which is easy to drive fast but lacks the thrill of a "Peugeot GTI" ;) My so called home track is Ahvenisto which is considered as the mini-Nürburgring of Finland and with such a small (ish) car I feel that I an make the most of both the track and the car. Still the car could use a few extra hp now that the suspension and drivetrain is in order :D (and the driver has learned somewhat to drive during the years)

I second that a massively great video, thanks to Quaife and Lohen for giving us access to share the experience, I would like to see many more video's of this nature, how about logistics at VAG audi for the R8 or such like...when people see the engineering and design effort that goes into manufacturing something, it's a lot easier to ask them to part with their money. How many people realised that a LSD helps with safety and braking.. not just putting power down, but preventing a skid. This video really makes you stand out and that's important. We have all seen exhaust mods and engine ecu maps, for the more experienced viewer we already know changing tyres is more important it will make you faster..... long before you add extreme loads and temperature to components most owners don't even know exist. The trouble is, we all like to think our cars are unique and I have another 45 bhp... over a standard model.... again, with only a little driver tuition in a standard car, you will beat the mod driver every day...not to mention be a lot safer on the road for the rest of us... the general public are to eager, to right of speed as dangerous and yet many of these features when applied correctly are excellent safety features.
