Welded Diff vs. $1200 Diff | HiLow

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

$1200 Limited Slip Differential vs a Free Welded Differential! Is saving the cash worth it? Let’s find out.
Team Hi (James Pumphrey & Zach Jobe) and Team Low (Nolan Sykes & Aaron Parker) have installed coilovers, wheels, and big meaty tires in order to make their cars faster, but we’re not just building these 350zs to be race cars, we’re building them to be fun cars. And what’s more fun than doing some sweet drifties on the skid pad.
To do that, we’re going to be swapping out our differentials... well Team Hi is. Nolan will be doing the time honored option of welding his.
With an open differential, the power from your engine takes the path of least resistance to the wheels. That’s good for allowing the inside and outside wheels to spin at different speeds when taking a turn -which is the reason diffs were invented in the first place. But, if one wheel totally loses traction the open diff just keeps directing more power to it and that one wheel will keep spinning til kingdom come. This is what we call a one-tire fire.
One way to limit that wheel from slipping is with a limited slip differential, or LSD. Team Hi bought a KAAZ SuperQ 2-way clutch-type Limited slip differential! 2 way means that the LSD engages the same amount during acceleration and deceleration. 2 way is generally the choice of drifters, because it keeps your lsd engaged pretty much all the time, which is good for skids.
Another way to prevent that one tire fire slippage and not spend $1200, is to weld the spider gears together leaving your back wheels permanently locked together all the time. This is great in a straight lines and when drifting, but when you go around corners and the wheels need to go different speeds, the diff can’t do its job anymore and the wheels end up constantly scrubbing and breaking traction in small jumps. But sometimes breaking traction is exactly what you want :)

The metal plate in the middle of the diff was the right idea, and something we (in sweden) learn by trial & error. Just welding the gears WILL result in it failing eventually. The middle plate adds so much more strength its virtually impossible to break (if you weld right). However, long term, because welded diff cant move at all, other components of the drive line do take more damage and wear over time.

Lsd over welded all day everyday. I am sure you will see the difference once those cars hit the track. The more expensive z will start to really improve as the performance of the engine is improved. The more expensive car at its present form will blow the cheap z on a roadcourse.

I was pretty put-off by them making statements without getting it on a track... the LSD makes a HUGE difference in handling. Also, a welded differential just eats tires on a daily and if anything does break, it's not going to be the differential, it's going to be an axle.

The issue with these cars is that there is a gear oil pocket inside those differentials that once it burns up it goes from being a limited-slip to being an open diff I did this to mine which is why I bought one and welded it and it was way better is better in the snow it was better in the rain it was better in the sun I knew exactly what my rear end was going to do and I knew it was going to put the power down when I wanted it to instead of skipping

As for breaking loose while driving in the town, it generally only happens if I want it too. In the rare event that it surprises me, its so easy to get control of again, it hasn’t been a problem for me.

Main advantage of LSD is you can modulate the diff lock by clutching in(because the diff is not locked when car is in neutral) or if you have a 1 or 1.5 way LSD, braking or deaccel as well. Depending on how you drive this can give you a lot more grip during drifting, and is undeniably superior for grip racing. They will perform the same if you just do donuts or only drift by power, but it gives you a lot more control especially if your car has lower power. With a lsd you can also usually get away with a stock ebrake, where as a welded with any kind of kind of grippy tire you’ll usually need a hydro to get it to lock consistently since it takes a lot more braking force to lock two wheels that are always connected to each other instead of spinning independently. There’s merit to both, but because welded benefits from more power and hydro, I think the cost difference is not that bad EDIT: added a few details for clarity!

I've had both on the same car. I prefer my 2 way. Just have to watch out sometimes decelerating too quick the rear end will lock up, If I were to buy a diff now I would go for a 1.5 way just because i'm not into drifting as much as I used to be. Problem with a welded on a daily is you definitely eat up your rear tires a lot faster and its very hard on your rear suspension or axles on every small turn. Also a welded diff your car wants to go forward, can be more prone to understeer if you don't want to break traction and drift around a corner.
