Why A Cash Reward Will Catch The University of Idaho Murderer

What’s the criminal psychological advantage of offering a cash reward and could the Moscow, Idaho PD not be catching the murderer because they refuse to offer one?
From the very start, the Moscow Police Department who are investigating the tragic murders of the four University of Idaho students in their small town of just 25 thousand refused to offer a cash reward for tips that lead to an arrest. When asked by the media, they claimed that a cash reward wasn’t necessary because they are already getting a lot of tips; however, is that the only advantage of offering a cash reward? Not at all, and it’s quite alarming that the Moscow PD apparently doesn’t understand this. However, their last murder case was 7 years ago, so they’re quite inexperienced in these types of crimes. Although it is true that they will receive more tips in general when a cash reward is offered, but can you think of any other benefit of offering a cash reward?
It increases the likelihood that a friend, girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, spouse, family member, or acquaintance will turn on the unidentified subject, unsub, to collect the big cash payout. Those are the breakthrough tips that the Moscow PD is not currently getting. As much we all naturally want to think that this unidentified subject, unsub, is a total loner who crawled up from the darkness of his cave to commit these crimes that’s likely not true at all. The unsub has friends, acquaintances, family, extended family, co-workers, and possibly even a love interest, all people who may be given extra encouragement to tip him off if a large sum of money becomes available to them. It’s natural for loyalty to waiver when money is involved. If a cash reward is offered, Moscow PD will start to get more tips like, hey my boyfriend was out the night of those murders, he’s been acting weird lately, he’s obsessed with this case, and he lives not too far away from there. Those are the tips that the Moscow PD is currently missing. Do you remember how Ted Bundy was initially found? It was actually his own fiancé who initially turned him in.
Cash rewards do much more than just provide more tips, cash rewards encourage better tips. $100,000 is a lot of money for pretty much anyone; therefore, it encourages loyalties to snap, and they only need one person in the unsub’s orbit to suggest it was them which will solve this case. Currently, the Moscow PD is not getting those better tips because they still refuse to offer a cash reward, since they seem to be ignorant, due to their inexperience, to understand the psychological power money has to sever “loyal” relationships.

Someone has information they're not coming forward with while the risk outweighs the reward. They may fear for their own life, they may rely on the suspected murderer financially or in some other way. They need the incentive to risk telling on a _quadruple murderer._

@@markdean4255 it's not a middle of nowhere, someone could see the car, hear someone talking, or someone's steps, and the housemates or neighbours or even friends of the killer could know he was outside at the time of the crime, possibly could notice their heightened mental state when they came back/next morning, know the reaction to the news about the murder, etc. Lots of clues. Of course harder if the killer is lonely and has no neighbours.

$50K would most likely do it........if the tip is a 'slam dunk' tip (such as a friend or girlfriend that can provide concrete evidence) then often this may be negotiated upwards by the tipster from $50,000.00. Often, reward money is determined by population and household income which seems to be moderate here in Moscow but at this point..........try anything to get this terrible case solved! Money isn't always the root of all evil and it could certainly lead to the elimination of much fear and apprehension from loss.......many times richer people or companies will gladly commit big portions if not all of the cash reward!!

Great video Derek -- you are 100 percent correct here -- a substantial reward could solve this case quick. I feel sorry for the parents and families of the victims -- inept, incompetent police department -- how the hell don't you offer a reward and refuse to do so? mind boggling

The only reason that makes sense is they KNOW who it is and are waiting on evidence to cement their case It has to be someone close probably young because they didn’t have a gun probably couldn’t afford a gun. Plus their hatred must have been intense because the knife was going dull with each wound and they kept going Also today a post came out stating the dead girls bullied another previous dorm mate into suicide. The poster said they got what they deserved

The police have nothing to lose by offering a reward. If no one comes forward there’s no payout. If someone comes forward with new information leading to an arrest-there you go! Yes, a lot of people have come forward with tips but I think this case has many layers and many different people that know information they’re not telling. If someone really starts talking for reward money IMO this case will crack wide open!

The Moscow police need to do everything possible for an airtight case against any suspect, so commenters who say they probably already have their man are off-base. I don't think the Moscow PD has much of anything at all, and not offering any reward is just a part of that failure. I don't think it's for lack of money, I think someone has been giving them lousy advice in a lousy investigation. If I'm wrong, great. I just want this monster caught.

I’m always proud to be considered a “shaker.” I wish you posted more often. I’m sure I’m subbed to all of your channels. Whenever someone shows a clip of Ted Bundy, I am reminded of a case I worked for a single 7pm to 7am shift at a rehab home for a guy who was quite manipulative. I had to keep my eyes on him, but he didn’t really need assistance. It was unclear exactly my role as a nurse aide. I was what the called a “sitter,” but I’m not sure what I could have done if he had decided to bolt or hold me hostage. I’m not sure his infractions. I was told to not engage. He went to bed soon after my arrival, but he was a bit incorrigible prior to that. He rather frightened me. But he was also a lot of fun. I think he had brain injury from an accident which made him highly unpredictable. He was transferred to a psyche facility the next day. But that clip you showed of Bundy reminds me of that work shift.
