I watched this in order to find out what I'm doing wrong with my mate. Basically everything. I'm grateful for the help. I know this makes me look bad but he's ten years younger than me and is ADHD easily distracted. I can't change the environment and he's always got access to his phone. He lives at work and when he's off work he doesn't want to focus on me. Trying to get and keep his attention really frustrating. I've been doing these suggestions by accident already and it's been helping. this only confirms why it helps and it's put in a more positive way than how it was in my head.

I was thinking about this for my oldest. Most conversations with him are during car rides. I’ve learned SILENCE IS GOLDEN and repeating back what he says in my own words and then empathizing with his emotion: “I can see why that was unfair/ was frustrating/ scary.” Also, I ask for permission to offer my insight. Sometimes he just wants to vent and frustration is circumvented when I don’t offer unsolicited advice. I’ll express similar experiences, and how I felt. I ask if he’d like to know the rest of the story and how I resolved it…. Communication, next to health, is everything in life- I think this will be my goal for the second half of this year- to actively improve my communication.

That was the case of Michael Raferty. I can't remember the detective's name (I think it's Mike Smith) but he's legendary. Jim Can't Swim did a video on it a while back. It's incredibly disturbing what Raferty did, but thanks to efforts of the detective he's behind bars.

I actually really love these videos as a parent LOL! I know I'm a sound completely insane but kids and teenagers can sometimes act like little mischievous criminals so these breakdowns are excellent for being a parent! I have used so many of your breakdowns and body language analysis to catch my kids in a lie! I actually studied law and took 3 years of college to prepare to be a police officer but it never came to fruition so we learned a lot about reading body language back then as well. Your analysis and videos are very similar to what we would study and practice. Keep up the awesome work on the videos!

Great video. When my son was having a problem, he wouldn't respond to my questions. I suggested we play with Legos and sure enough, he'd open up without me asking. I know police and military interrogators who say the first thing is to make the subject feel comfortable. The police interrogator also said that people feel a need to confess but the conditions have to be right.

Definitely not passing judgment has served me well, and people tend to be really open to me, but i also show them that no topic will really shock me. Going over past experiences has helped quickly break down barriers. I find that showing respect even in extraordinary circumstances goes a long way. For about 5 years I would help notify and inform victims of revenge nude posting of the said postings and in the initial message give then all the detail they needed to remove the postngs, In extreme cases i would provide how-to on disabling fb links to help ease the onslaught of terrible people. More often than not, this would lead to people putting more trust in me than anyone else they have ever done prior because it is dealing with them at their most vulnerable. I think when your intentions are pure, people can truly sense it. Gladly, the internet has become better than it was in the 2010s from this standpoint, and social media companies (facebook) try to shield people better in some ways.

Interesting. It does depend on the person, the situation, the others involved. One time, years ago, I was in a situation at work, with an older lady who worked in the cafeteria of the building where I was in charge. This lady had a difficult time with Blacks. I would arrive early, before 7 a.m., and have coffee before I reported in. She would come right over to my table, there was no one else around, and distressfully voice her fears and trepidations about having "so many of them around," and "all the noise they make." I would listen, not agreeingly, but in such a way as to keep her going. I knew also that this was an unhealthy woman who probably needed to retire. These conversations would happen almost daily, every time revealing some small outrage this woman experienced the day before with one of her Black coworkers, always blaming a black person for this or that. Well, one day, this woman, Dorothy, accused one the daily cleaning crew, a reliable, good worker named Troy, of stealing a juice drink out the freezer cabinet. No doubt she confused his cell phone with one of the bottles from the freezer, cell phones were bigger 20 years ago. Dorothy created a big embarrassing scene calling Troy a thief. Management was called in. It was a mess. I was in a security position then, and I revealed Dorothy's daily rants in a tasteful way to the detective I reported to, and Dorothy was reassigned and Troy was not fired.
