How Criminal Psychology Can Solve The Idaho Murder Mystery - Criminal Profile Breakdown

Who could be responsible for the University of Idaho unsolved murder mystery? Let’s piece together the evidence and break it down.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 13, 2022, Ethan, Xana, Madison, and Kaylee were sadly murdered on the second and third floors of their University of Idaho off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho, while Bethany and Dylan slept on the first floor. This whole story is very odd and suspicious, so let’s piece together all the evidence to make sense of it to find out what really happened and develop a possible unidentified subject (unsub) profile.

One detail left out is that the 2nd and 3rd floor were built as an addition. Meaning the common wall between the original structure and the addition was originally an outside wall and therefore insulated. There may even be a double wall where the two structures join. This could explain why the two sleeping downstairs heard nothing.

My understanding is that the two roommates who survived found Ethan near the kitchen ran out of the house and one of the roommates fainted and the other was hysterical. The neighbors took the phone off the girls and reported to the EMTs that they had a girl who was unconscious ie the girl who had fainted. The EMT showed up spoke with the hysterical girl then went into the house and discovered the crime scene. This is why the first report was of someone who was unconscious.

I could totally see how the other roommates didn’t hear anything. Sleep with tv/music going. Used to the house having noise at times like this etc. been drinking/parting. It’s not suspicious that they didn’t hear anything. In college I lived in a house with 6 other people, wouldn’t have ever suspected at thing hearing noise on a party night like this, you kinda get used to hearing noise all the time so it desensitizes you to it

I agree totally. Other than the "unconscious" thing. It's hard to say it was them definitely. Especially without them having some other evidence fairly quickly pointing their way. Doubt 2 college girls could make a crime this clean. Unless they had someone else do the job anyway.

Whats SUSPICIOUS, is their call to dispatch. Theres a HUGE difference between unconcious and brutally murdered? And to say someone is unconscious wouldn't you have to be right up on them? Like in the room? If the door was shut they could ha e just had headphones on... The call makes NO SENSE. And if they were in the room why not report what WAS REALITY???

Imagine going in your roommate's room and seeing blood... you're scared and yell their name several times but they dont respond. In that moment, I think a lot of scared individuals would call 911 and say, "I saw blood and my friend isn't waking up." So the operator types in 'unconscious individual'... We don't know if the 911 operator told them to be cautious or go wait outside because a threat could still be in the house. Additionally, the surviving roommates could've heard a scream in the middle of the night and assumed they saw a spider or a roach, so they didn't go check on them, but then once they woke up, they saw some blood on the back door and figured they'd go check on their roommate and then walked into a scene... you think they started examining they're friends to see what type of wounds they had? Probably not. I really think "unconscious individual" is the term the 911 operator chose, rather than the caller's choice of words.

The two roommates woke up late, saw what happened and ran outside. One girl fainted and the other attended to her. The surrounding neighbors grab one of their phones and called the police. It’s likely one roommate passed out from just seeing all what took place inside. I still don’t understand how you don’t hear screams and bumping in the night, but God bless all of them bc that scene must’ve been horrible.

Maybe whomever did it figured the roommates would be suspected and left them intentionally? The weirdest part to me is that they called their friends over before the police while thinking that they were just 'passed out'. That much blood, the smell alone would be nauseating and thick in the air. Something doesn't feel right at all. But I think the cops suspect who did it and are building the evidence against them to ensure an air tight case.

Passersby noticed and came over picking up the phones to continue the call with the 9-11 operator.. so when paramedics arrived, they initially thought they were dealing with the unconscious roommate outside... until they were able to make sense of what occurred inside

Thank you so much for sharing your insight on the crime. I wish the police weren’t so tight lipped about what happened so we could hear a deeper analysis from you. Our town was always known for being safe. I could leave my purse and wallet in my car with the door unlocked for a week and know no one had taken it. Friends would leave their front doors unlocked all the time and not worry about it. Now everyone’s looking over their shoulders more and buying deadlocks. It’s true what the cop said, what happened here took away our innocence. I want things to go back to normal. I mean, we’re all going about our lives now as normal. How did the killer know that the students did not possess a handgun? Would some homeless drifter enter into this house at night without knowing where each student was sleeping (bedroom)? This was a TARGETED killing of either one or both of the two blondes (Kaylee and Maddie) as a result of stab wounds (it would be helpful to know the sequence of the killings from the autopsy). The male (Ethan) did not live there and may have surprised the killer from what I understand (unplanned for event for the killer!). The killer knew the layout of the death house ahead of time. I do not believe that the killer was a transient. I believe that the killer lives in the area and probably has kept the long blade knife as a trophy weapon. The killer may not have a prior record as well and was probably planning this event for some time (premeditated), i.e. it was not a heat of the moment thing.

A month ago, a friend of mine was killed by a hitman hired by her 10-year partner. We tried to come up with ways she could have escaped this fate but couldn't. Bottom line: If someone close to you was going to have you killed, there is simply no escape. Her boyfriend was arrested and he killed himself in jail even before he was charged. So what I'm saying is we can't exclude the possibility of a hired hitman targeting one or two of the girls.

I think only one had defensive wounds, too, but if stabbed in the throat, could have been unable to scream. And the mom said her daughter and ex were getting back together, so it seems like he'd be happy. But it's a theory! I just commented this under someone else's comment but I will comment this again because I am sick of seeing people being suspicious of the roommates. I sleep with earplugs, two fans on either side of me, door locked, and because of insomnia I usually take sleeping aid. Last week my roommate told me she was yelling out loud two separate times (between 3 and 4 am as weird as that is) because she thought I was at her door, yelling for her that she was late for work. Her schedule has drastically changed for the holidays and she was super stressed out about getting sleep so she was having bad, super realistic dreams about it. I was, for lack of better words, dead to the world 1-2 hours before these two incidents. My bed where I was sleeping is directly against my roommate's bedroom and her bed where she was yelling is literally 6 feet away from my head. I heard absolutely nothing and was horrified when she told me this 16 hours later. I did not wake up once until well into the morning. I'm so sick of this "there's no way the roommates didn't hear anything" narrative. They DID hear something. At the very beginning it was reported that they heard scuffling and locked their doors, thinking there were people over or a party. The basement where they stayed was extremely secluded and from the front door walking into the tiny "hallway" to go directly up the stairs to the main floor, it looks like it only could have been a bathroom or a closet down there. I believe that the suspect knew the house, but I am so sick of this roommate blaming. I have absolutely not a single shred of doubt that someone could have slept through this. I am also updating this to say that one of the surviving roommates of Ted Bundy (same situation as this) ended it all because she could not live with the guilt that she slept through it, wasn't able to help anyone, and lived. I've always highly respected this channel but I don't appreciate the quotations and quotes regarding Dylan and Bethany. It is quite disgusting. It is also rumored that Ethan was slumped against the inside of Xana's bedroom door, and this is why the two girls thought someone was unconscious.. they didn't see a body and no one has ever said they didn't see blood. I'm sure they were absolutely panicked. Just leave them alone.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but what if there was jealousy not just over the breakup with Jack, but she just bought a new car and was planning on backpacking in Europe in January. Young college girl, works at a bagel shop, buys a $50k plus new car on her own as her mother stated, taking a trip to Europe and wanted to take her mom out the next week and pay for it. Her mom seemed skeptical she could afford lunch. So where did the money come from to afford these things on a college kids income? Was there a sugar daddy in her life? Could this be why she was taking a break from her boyfriend? We're the calls to him that night and attempt to calm him down if he had been at the house that night, had a fight and left angry with her? May explain why only 4 were killed, they would've been the only ones still up that could say he had been there and that there had been a fight. Do they know if Jack attempted to return any of those missed calls or texts the next day when he woke up? If not, perhaps it was because he knew they wouldn't be answering. It's all speculation I know, just hadn't heard anyone bring up where all of this money would've come from for Kaylee. Could mean there's another party involved here nobody is considering

Apparently the roommates ran outside hysterical after finding Ethan near the kitchen. Some friends or acquaintances walking nearby heard them screaming (I’m so sorry) bloody murder and ran over. One of the girls managed to call 911 but ended up passing out before she could make any statements to the dispatcher . At that point, one of the acquaintances took her phone and spoke with the dispatcher saying she had lost consciousness. The other roommate was likewise too distraught to make much sense. The ambulance was never told of Ethan, so maybe dispatch concluded the call before the other roommate gathered herself enough to explain the situation? According to this Facebook post one of the roommates finally explained enough to prompt one or two of the passerby acquaintances to run inside to give aid to Ethan and/or check on the other three roommates. So potentially the scene was contaminated by multiple people. Also the ambulance had no idea what was in store when they arrived. I have a feeling the audio wasn’t released because it was pretty well useless. I read this post like two weeks ago, who knows how much is fiction, maybe all. However it does explain the 911 call. 🤷‍♀️

It's possible they did hear something but dismissed it as usual late night noise from multiple roommates, or they could have been too scared to investigate it at 4am. Most young people think they are invincible so the when another roommate does not come out of their room they think they may be passed out from alcohol, not that they were murdered.

I lived in a college dorm I know how noisy it can be same thing with a house off campus shared by a group of friends. With that many living there including their friends that would stop by and even stay overnight sometimes, I'm convinced I doubt they ever locked their doors. I also just have a feeling they ruled out the roommates too quickly. It makes no sense someone came in killed 4, left 2 perfectly alone and they never heard a thing. I've got just a bad feeling about one or both of the roommates, perhaps one or both was jealous of the new vehicle, that one murdered got more attention from a guy she liked, etc etc. I've seen too many cases of people murdered by someone they thought was their friend. Also the roommates when they woke up and figured out something was clearly wrong, instead of phoning police or ambulance they instead called friends to come over to the apartment which would heavily taint any evidence left behind, which would be the MO of someone who had committed the murder and wanted to throw off police. Don't even get me started on how quickly they went out and got tattoos to post all about on social media.

For those wondering how the roommates on the first floor slept through the massacre, let me give you my theory: The murders took place on the 2nd and 3rd floors. All victims were killed in their beds. Meaning, whoever was killed last whether it was the victims on the 2nd or 3rd floor slept through the first murders. So if THEY slept through it, it makes sense that the girls on the first floor slept through it as well. Follow?

Just a thought of how the boyfriend could have done it. He could have killed them, and while he was inside the home, he could have called & texted his own phone from the girl’s cell phones. He would have left his own phone at his house/ giving him the alibi, by his phone pining at his own home location. If they have blood evidence- he needs to be checked & cleared by DNA, NOT by his “word”.

Tell em' what's a comin. >If them college kids can't tell dead from dead, they should've picked a better college. >Looking at an aerial view it looks like the place to back in unnoticed is the dead end at S Blake St., someone should go poke around there. There is not enough information to determine why the 911 call was fishy, nor anything else. If I had a kid there, I'd tell em' to come on home for a spell, I got to much invested in em' to take that kind of gamble now.

I am not an expert on this case, but I have heard the two girls on floor 1 did hear loud commotions upstairs but there was often "extracurricular activity" going on there and did not want to get involved in what was happening. Locked their door and went back to sleep. This saved their lives. On the 911 call, the best explanation is on YTer Southern Logics, (YT Search) University of Idaho 911 call! Many Questions answered by someone who was on the scene! / The roommates did not see their friends killed and thought they were just "passed out'. The roommate that made the 911 call was the girl that was passed out. On a side note; the police have no obligation to tell the public the truth on what they know or don't know in a TV Q & A. The killer is part of the public too.

In my opinion and it's just an opinion, it's fairly obvious. The killer came for Maddie. He knew what bedroom she was in and he knew that Kaylee had moved out. He didn't know Ethan was there. So he expected 4 girls. One on the 3rd floor (Maddie) Xana on the second and the two on the bottom which he had no need to go to. He came in on the second floor thru the kitchen and went straight to Maddie's room and found two girls which took him by surprise. As he was killing the first girl the other had enough to time scream but not much. Rumor is Maddie had the more extensive wounds so if he killed her first he would have gone back to take his anger out on her. The girls mentioned that they heard something but thought it was just the others being loud but since Xana was on the floor right below they both probably heard the scream. Ethan got up to check and as he opened the door to the hallway he was met by the killer who was trying to get out of there. It's said that Xana had defensive wounds. She probably heard Ethan yelling and either peeked out the door way or more than likely froze in her room and then tried to fight off her attacker. As to why he didn't go after the other two girls he wasn't there for anyone but Maddie. Ethan got in the way and Xana might have recognized him. By the time he was done with Xana he wanted to get out of there fast and if he did know about the other two girls he probably thought they called 911 by now. If Kaylee wasn't there no one else would have been killed. He could have had his way with Maddie. I don't think he was there just to kill her.

I'm still trying to undertand how the two roomates, who were sleeping just below, didn't hear a thing. There absolutely had to be terrifying screams from anyone. No one appears to have access to those girls or their. stories. The call from Kaylee to her ex could very well be a "booty call." It would'nt be the first time people had sex with their exes. But who turns off their phone at night? You could easily just put it on silent and turn it over so it would light up. Turned-off phones are not trackable. I believe the killer walked in to the back sliding door which was directly on the 2nd floor. How do you mistaken two people as "unconscious?" The pool of blood might be a clue someone else was wrong. Then, instead of calling 911, they have friends come over. Wtf? Lots of strange happenings with this case. What's worse, it appears that this might end up being a cold case.

I understand people in the comments talking about living in a house with a lot of people in college and tuning out the noises after a while to sleep. But the girls downstairs didn’t hear a peep? They were just sleeping peacefully, like sweet baby lambs and woke up at noon to a literal blood bath? I call bullshit. Curiouser and curiouser.

If you live in a shared house you get used to the comings and goings of people. If the girls did hear someone walking through the house they probably would have assumed it was their roommate's coming home. If someone is being stabbed while they are sleeping there is probably very smal chance that they would get concious enough to scream. When I wake up, it takes me a few minutes to realise I'm awake.

I think there were 2 attackers, no way the people on the other floors would not have been woke up, that dog would have been barking, unless the dog was familiar with the attackers. That would have woke up the others making nearly impossible to kill both at once with just a knife . Even if it was just one person, that dog knew them. People do not usually die instantly from a knife attack. Or they could have been drugged first. All those phone calls and then they are just totally sound asleep for a little bit later. Wish I could see the scene. Was the dog harmed? And they obviously knew they were dead, why did it get called in that way? The 911 call would be very helpful also. Why would they use the word unconscious, no one uses that word when there is blood everywhere and you are " in shock " making a call like that. Dead is so much easier and unconscious is a bigger much harder word to say. Why would that word even come in the the callers mind when they probably had very rarely if ever used that word.. Just say the word, it's sort of hard to say, dead much easier. Like I said, obviously the caller knew they were not unconscious, she knew they were dead .. Plus the suspect was let in or already in.. Even in a small town 2 girls sleeping by the front door would lock the door you would think.

I just had a sickening feeling that this is someone that wants to make a mystery. Probably one of the victims was the target, and they had either thought through doing this in a general sense or had visited the house and had gone through it mentally, used the code to the door and then waited up top where maybe the main target was. Could be timing prevented them from going into the rooms on the lower level as they presumably exited.
