Not really, my grandma has life insurance policies on all of us grandkids. I only knew about it because the policy matured and she and my mom needed me to go with them to get details on the payout amount for the insurance agency wouldn't tell either of them even tho my grandma paid for it. Now that I know, I've been tempted to cash it out. Wish they would have never told me.

My parents and grandparents did this. When the policies matured, I had a choice of cashing it for immediate usage, or reinvesting, increase coverage etc Funeral expenses are often outrageous, policies help. What don't you people who are so negative understand? Grandma didn't benefit, the girlfriend did. All expenses should have been paid out of that insurance payout. Good reason to have family gatherings to discuss everyone's final wishes, lay it all out- no surprises when any bad news happens, because it will- when you are just living your every day lives

I was a CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) now retired. The fact that, in the USA, people can take out Life Insurance policies on others without their permission or even knowledge, is disgusting. It also means that no underwriting has been made of the life insured other than a couple of simple questions and a "family" relationship. It is WRONG to be able to do this. Just imagine if anyone was able to take out Life Insurance on Politicians etc. There have been numerous cases of large policies being taken out by husbands on wives and visa versa, only for them to kill the spouse for the insurance money. Again, disgusting. Yes, we can see the intent initially is "good" (grandparents on grandkids) but as others have said, the GP's should take out policies on their own lives, making the grandkids the beneficiaries.

When my children were born Gerber life insurance sent us information about life insurance for babies. I’ve have policies on all my children and now my grandchildren since they were born. I still have life insurance on myself and my husband. Maybe they did something similar. Gerber even calls it the grandparents policy. The policies we’ve taken out through our workplaces if we didn’t tell each other we wouldn’t know about them. But the larger policies that was taken out we both had to be there to get insurance on each other. I couldn’t go in and take out life insurance on him, only myself. Things are changing in regard to life insurance, and people taking out policies on someone else.

  • @Kaboomboo

As an underwriter one would think you'd know that life insurance policies are mostly for funeral expenses and other things associated with the death (i.e. medical bills, time off work to grieve, etc.). I would think you'd also know that a life insurance policy taken out when they're young will qualify them for life insurance should they decide to get one further down the line and not be disqualified due to preexisting health conditions.

  • @cindys6775

@@Kaboomboo I would think anyone would understand that regardless of weather or not their an underwriter. Sadly that doesn’t mean everyone will. Personally I don’t understand how someone would look at the death of someone else especially a loved one as an opportunity for monetary gain.

    @Kaboomboo

    Жыл бұрын

@@cindys6775 I don't either. But that wasn't this lady's motive and indeed isn't usually the motive of other people that take out such policies. The motive is, as I mentioned in my initial comment, is to cover funeral expenses and time off work for grieving. As with all insurances, you pay into them in case something happens. You don't want something to happen, but things DO happen. And in this case, the grandmother took out a policy for such a thing and it turns out it was a good idea because the grandson did die an untimely death and the policy covered the expenses. It wasn't motivated by monetary gain, it was motivated by not being out a shitton of money when the unexpected happens. The policy was only for 10k, not 10 million. Plus she signed over the fiancé as the beneficiary so she obviously was not motivated by getting a payout.

How is it all about money if grandma made her the beneficiary well before Christopher died. Even though it’s not it’s not in the policy. All she’s asking is that the girl bury her grandson and put a headstone on his grave. Whatever is left over the girl can keep. So if she’d just paid for the headstone. She would be walking away with $5000. Something she wouldn’t have had if the grandmother hadn’t paid on this policy. JJ is probably going to rule against the grandmother because there wasn’t anything set in the policy on how the money was to be spent.

My grandmother has always been a firm advocate for ALL forms of insurance policies, especially life. When she was younger, she said it only took 1 time for her to realize the importance of it. A family member passed away and everyone had to scramble to pay for the funeral. She has life insurance on all of our family members. And we're all aware. It's nothing very expensive, but enough to cover funeral costs with maybe a little extra leftover. She has the larger policies out on herself and my grandfather. She made us promise that we wouldnt have extravagant funerals for them and blow the policy money she worked hard to keep and pay for decades.

I just started watching and have no idea of the verdict ... I would NEVER sue over paying for a headstone. If there is not one I would have a simple marker put in place and then save dollar by dollar if I wished a "better" one made to replace it. There are some things you simply NEVER sue over. A grave marker is one of those thing.

My first thought was "why are they suing to avoid having to pay for a headstone, that's just sad, shouldn't people who loved the deceased want there to be a headstone even if they have to pay for it out of pocket?". If it's more important to this lady to have a headstone than for the fiancee to pay for it, then buy one herself. If it's more important to have the fiancee pay for it than to have one, then don't. Going to court over it just seems sad, I'd be rolling in my grave if I saw people wanted to avoid financial responsibility for my grave this bad. Edit: In part 2, turns out he already got the headstone which makes it less sad for him but makes the court case even more bizarre.

Most of the people in our family buy and pay for our grave sights and have the headstone already, all that has to be done is having someone add the DOD to it. The few times someone passed that didn’t have things already taken care of did have life insurance that was enough to cover everything including the headstone. I would like to think we would all come together to pay for such things but you never know until in that situation how people are going to be.

The sad thing is that this lady took out this life insurance policy on her grandson and did so because she felt if something happened she was too poor to pay for it in any other way. She was kind enough to change the beneficiary to the person who her grandson loved and shared his life with...I'm sure she told her exactly what was meant by the policy as best she could. But this young lady decided to keep the leftover money! that's it that's all. I've never heard of anything like this however how is the lady looking bad for suing for compensation to get a headstone for her grandson when the whole reason why she got the policy was in case she had to bury him as well as to put a headstone on his grave? If there's money left over it should have been used for that intent and purpose.

Ppl are freaking because she did not state that she is also on a policy for her life in case of her demise needing to be covered. Why would I choose to spend money on young ppl before the elderly, other than seeing it coming; sickness, criminal lifestyle, abusive spouse, got into an accident, etc?! If there were policies taken out to cover the grandparents it wouldn't be strange. But she hasn't made it clear that *it is*, soooo, a lot of ppl are going to summize some extraordinary reasons for it. I see what you saying anyone can pass at any age, young and old, whether an onset of a sickness, crash or any sort of accident or poisoning, murder, etc. Ppl can pass at any age at any time, for countless reasons. Shoot there used to be a show called *1000 ways to* .... you know the rest. So we know this already, common knowledge, but again because she's not stating that she saw the death coming, and she is not stating that they equally have a policy on her own life, that makes it strange. Soooo I mean you deduce, what you deduce. Right or wrong it's a logical 💭🤔.

I think it was a great idea that she have a policy on all her grandkids. My brother pass away recently and he had insurance but he stoped paying it without the families knowledge. If my parents or my siblings knew that we would have continue to pay for it. Funerals cost a lot of money especially in my Haitian culture. Couple of months after my brother pass, my dad pass away and because he had insurance it was less stressful. I wish many people had insurance on their love one so they wouldn't have to wonder where the money will be coming from for funeral expenses. Life is not promise if everyone knew how important life insurance was, then we all would get. If the grandma had other motives she would have never transfer the policy under the fiance's name. She should of put herself and the fiance as the beneficiary especially because they were not married. In my household we believe life insurance is solely for funeral expenses.

Shortly after our son was born 23 years ago, a coworker of my husband lost his 16 year old son in a motor vehicle accident. We were updating our life insurance at the time, and mentioned the tragedy of a child passing so young, the devastation for the family, as they were fundraising to cover expenses. Our broker raised the issue of a policy for our child, which I sort of took offense to, until I listened to her reasoning. Not only are funerals expensive, but often a parent will take extra time from work to grieve, yet life goes on, bills have to be paid. So it was after considering her points, that we took out a policy for our son, and still pay monthly premiums for it. It gives us peace of mind, Heaven forbid something were to happen to him, that we could take the time we needed to at least be able to function again!

Young woman with such dignity and sadness. Grandma has some screws loose! She wants to blame someone so she focuses on this woman who lost far far more than she. Loss of one of four grandchildren doesn’t compare to the loss of a partner in life. Backing up, I think the grandparents bought the grandsons life insurance because, like many idiots, they believe it protects the person from death, it’s intentionally named to make people feel this way or it would be called death insurance. Grandma emotionally felt this would preserve the lives, not pay off when dead. Oh she knew it wasn’t that but that’s how these food feel about life insurance. I admire the grace of this young woman with a broken heart but she should get that $5000. Had I been in her place certainly the dignity would also have been there , but I would have made this grandma and those hunting me pay a very hard price for their evil. I’d have made them face what they were hiding from and rammed their viciousness down their throats while publicly destroying their reputation deservedly! The grandmother is the one who took out the insurance policy and made all monthly payments (possibly making those payments for many, many years). The grandmother wasn’t looking to profit, she wanted her loved one to be laid to rest with dignity. The fiancé should respect the wishes/intentions of the grandmother, who took out this policy. If not for the grandmother’s forward thinking, everyone would be scrambling to secure funds!

It’s not creepy to take out insurance policies on your grandchildren. Especially if you don’t expect anyone else to bury them you don’t want that unforeseen burden in the future. Furthermore, I need you to study grief and loss because that’s what you’re looking at grief and loss.

The selling point of getting life insurance on children or grandchildren is that the money matures over time with small premiums and once the child reaches 18 or a certain age they can withdraw the money upwards of 15,000 USD or more depending on the plan and premium. Usually for college savings ex: Gerber Life Insurance works this way. So not an unusual thing for grand parents to do.

First, I could take out a policy on you without you even knowing if I wanted to. All I would need is your full legal name, DOB, and SS number. Second, here in the south, it's very common for grandparents who can afford it, to take out SMALL policies on their grandkids. Not a million-dollar policy to be profited off, but usually a $ 5000 policy that would cover funeral expenses only.

I can imagine that grandma like my mom did for all her grandkids took out a life insurance policy for just in case ( and it happened at 6 months for one of her grandchildren) No malice on her part because upon hearing her grandchild got engaged she transferred the policy to future wife. The least the girl could do is pay for the tombstone they weren't married three years later? She got 10 and will get another 5 in 2 hrs for a policy she would have never thought of getting on her own. Out of 15k you paid 8. Get the man the tombstone. That's what a wife should do anyway🙄

My father somehow found an insurance company or underwriter who wrote policies for people who were 90 years old and dying of cancer (don't ask how, it's complicated.) When my elderly grandmother found out, she got on the phone and roared at us to get out there and take out as many policies on her as we could. She said if the bookie was stupid enough to misjudge the odds on the horse, then you bet as much as you can! When she died, there was a record payout.
