Which bicycle bell is best? Testing Knog, Spurcycle, Crane and more
Спорт
Eight bicycle bells have been put to the test from $2 junk bells through to premium knog and Spurcycle bike bells.
The bells have been tested by Bicycles Network Australia both indoor and outdoor for loudness (decibels), aural quality as well as for functionality, build quality and aesthetics.

This is the ultimate bike bell review love it

Hey thanks for that.
Oh, I'm getting the squeeze horn...
This was the first truly helpful video in my journey to finding a new bell after my first generic one broke. I love the designed of the knog. But I have to drive along a quite pedestrian heavy road. So I ended up with the loud crane one. Thanks.

how did the crane bell go? its been a couple of years, did it withstand the test of time?
Hella plot twist on the outside test there - with that accent and channel name, the last thing I expected was snow!
Thank you for making this review! Your recording of the sounds is perfect! Thank you for allowing the bells to speak for themselves!
Thank you very much for this detailed analysis. This is by far the best and technical comparison I have seen so far.
Fabulous! Thank you! This is a perfect comparison of both near/distant volume as well as a graphic illustration of the harmonics. It's also great to see them side-by-side, for those of us with accessory-crowded handlebars. This video gets my ringing endorsement!
Great demonstration! Thank you so much! Yesterday I bought the Spurcyle bell. Your video helped a lot.
The Crane is quite nice , similar to the british bell " Lion Bell Works " i have one of these and it is like a musical instrument . a very beautiful pure tone that lingers for many seconds .
love your short, honest review!👍🏼🥳🏆
Thank you for checking how they compare regarding decibels. Just got the Crane Suzu Bell the loudest bell you tested
Remember one simple principle: Decibel ratings are a magnitude scale, meaning that for every 10 decibels the sound increases tenfold. A 70 decibel bell is 10× louder than a 60 decibel bell. As a rule of thumb, a 3 dB increase doubles volume, so a 66 dB sound is about 4× louder than a 60 dB sound.
@R0bsterb0Y
16 күн бұрын
The explanation of yours is quiet good, but your values are wrong. The decibel ratings are a log2 based value, not a log10 based value like magnitude of earthquakes. So every 10 decibels "more", the sound-intensity doubles: 50 decibel ist "double as loud" als 40 decibel.
I have the Spurcycle bell on both of my bikes. They are mounted on the right side drop bar and work great to alert people I am approaching. The company stands by their product. One of the bells had lost the loudness after a couple of years. So, I shipped it back to Spurcycle and they repaired it, free of charge. Not only does their bell sound great it is very compact which is a priority compared to other bells.

Crane is better
Thank you for the enlightening review. Another aspect to consider is that for a few people who are hearing impaired at certain frequencies, it is preferable that the bell gives off at least two tones. The 'click' sound in your car when you turn on the turn signal is handled by a speaker giving off two tones (for exactly that reason). Another feature to consider is the ring-time (or the sound decay) because we also like that the tone eventually stops after e.g. 2-3 seconds. The video is pretty clear on these aspects (even if these features are not explicitly mentioned).
Excellent & super thorough review - thanks so much for sharing!!
Great video Christopher! Lots of details and good analysis. Love the outdoor test in the snow! Pretty cold in Aus hey?! LOL
Thank you very much for this video. It really helped me to find out my bell.
The Crane Suzu is easily the best, loudest and most pleasing sounding bell. It also has the traditional bicycle bell sound. When riding on trails or on the street and approaching from behind people who are walking it is best to have a bell that they can hear and recognize the sound as being a bicycle bell so they know what is approaching them.

I agree. I used one of those triangle shaped bells before. It makes a beautiful clean pitch, but when I approached people from behind theyd just look around out of curiosity. So I switched to a classic style bell from a big box store and now people start sidestepping and glancing behind them at the same time.

I have a spurcycle clone and it's literally the best thing ever. It's super compact and robust and the sound is sharp, long and loud. Works very well.
Awesome video, thank you for such a thorough review.
I love my Crane bell, and my bike wears it on the stem; it's convenient to reach, and doesn't take up bar space. Pedestrians love my bell too. :-)

The horn made me laugh
I usually just shout and say woah!!! Works wonders
This was a great video
The large brass Crane bell is the best I've found so far, having tried a few, including Spurcycle. In fact the Spurcycle bell is excellent, but does't carry as well as the Crane in my experience. The Crane is also mellower even though it's louder. But they're definitely both very good products.
I like the $5 bell. It's got a nice large thumb pad and great price.
Well done! Thank you!
Good work, thanks.

If you tighten it too much, it doesn't resonate loudly. These ones sound overtightened.
The English made Lion Bellworks bells are the loudest, best sounding, longest ringing and best looking, by far. Not to mention being about half the price of the overpriced Spurcycle bell which isn't any louder than my older tiny Cateye bell. But when in doubt and cycling in the city among vehicles with their windows rolled up and half asleep drivers, the AirZound horn can be a lifesaver. I gave a blast when a tow truck driver was intending to blow through a 4-way stop, and the driver was so startled and hit his brakes so hard that he jerked/bounced forward in his seat as his truck slammed to a stop. The AirZound is louder than our city's transit bus horns, so it can be useful.
Great video.
Great Job
Excellent!
Best test out
Danke, sehr interessant!
Spurcycle hands down sounds the best and pleasant to the ears which is better for good vibes.
Great testing! I wonder how a Bell Honker 400 would compare to all those. Horn versus bell but a compact horn!
Very helpful video. What did you use to mount the Knog Oi Lux (Large) to the handle bar?
I like more a jingling sound than a stationary resinence ring. Most of these bells have a high pitch ring but do not cycle their resinence to get a ching ching ding a ling resinence ring which greets pedestrians to a melody.
8:15 It's worth noting that the Crane bells also come in other colors and finishes like Stealth Black, so it doesn't have to only go well with vintage bicycles.

@@alphaomega9387 Well, you have to release it in order for the hammer to swing back and actually hit the bell.
I'm actually considering the Crane E-Ne bell because I have no room on my handlebars on the left side, and on my right side, I have a bulky gear shifter on the top that prevents me from comfortably using my finger (instead of thumb) to reach over the top and trigger the bell. With the E-Ne, the handle for the hammer is always on the bottom. And the bottom on the right side of my handlebars is currently unutilized space on my bike.

A bit late, but don't forget your stem; it's a common place to put a bell. Easy to reach, but out of the way.
I got a copper Crane. It's pretty loud & sounds good.
Aye cheers! Been to look in department store and while I wasn't expecting fancy, I do expect functional. Their only model performed like your $2 piece of s...! Honestly sometimes the crap that comes out of china, we might as well just clip a photo of a bell on a piece of cardboard and mount that on the bike! Why even bother? Technically it might cover legal requirements but a loud fart would better warn pedestrians ahead. Just more rubbish straight to landfill, it annoys me no end. I find the $5 bell adequate, though I might stretch for the Crane. That $70 bell would be stolen off my bike lol. There's another video of some Dutch fellow testing bells and some change markedly once wet (tested under shower) so if you ride in the rain that might be another consideration for folks to think about. Thanks again, much appreciated.
hmm so just buy the cateye and spend the saved money else where. Thanks for the work you did making this review :)

Spurcycle bell is superb although note the metal clasps are too large for placing near the grips on a standard bar (e.g. Jones H-bar). Need to use a zip tie.
I recently found a vintage mickey mouse bell in great shape. The problem is when I ride it rings on every bump. It's the type that spins inside. Anything I can do ? Thanks
he distance of each bell to the device is different you need to redo the test with same distance for al bells to reader
which one of these will still work in the rain? that's a pretty big problem for most bells!
Crane for the win!
I use a referee's whistle. I can change the pitch, volume and tone at will. It sits in my mouth rather than on the handlebar.
Always liked the concept of the Oi bells but they're just not loud enough.
I use two bells , a higher & a lower pitched one . I activate them simultaneously .
So in terms of bang for you buck the junk bell seems like a clear winner. It’s primarily for being heard after all.
I use knog knockoff and it's pretty good
crane suzu for the win!!
One area not covered is whether any of these bells rattle or have unintended ringing when riding on rough roads/trails.
The best bell is the one that is most likely to be heard. Usually that's the loudest bell. The one furthest to the right is an absolute piece of trash at $29. You'd be better off yelling at someone.
Спасибо за обзор!
In the Netherlands i use a 80mm DingDong Bell it gives a great sound, much better then, PINGGGggg.

The Knog Oi Bell we bought today sounds way better than the one in the video, it sustains just like the crane bell and the spurcycle. I didn't like the Crane Bell so much as it sounds just like a service hotel bell. I think the spurcycle has the best tone but based on the size (small), sound, design and the price ($29) I think the Knog Oi Classic beats them all.
@bicyclesnetau
2 жыл бұрын
Good comment, one detail I didn't touch on is that the knog bells each have a metal coating (copper, brass, steel, titanium) which does change the tone of the sound. Having used the knog bells (and I still use them) for years, the hammer-strike on the Classic is not always reliable and I have had a few fail (particularly originally released generation 1 bells that had a different hammer and spring). In this respect, the Hammer mechanism on the Knog Lux and the Spurcycle is more dependable.
The ear is very sensitive to this frequency range so they don't have to measure loud on a dB meter to be effective. I personally find the piercing bells to be just that, overly harsh.
Tbh I got sick of ringing the bell for people hogging the cycle lane multiple people across while cycling slow. So I just play music off my phone , something rhythmic like electronic and it works to let them know I’m gonna pass.

The problem I've had with the Spurcycle one is that the tone is just too high. Older people don't hear it. And those are the people you encounter most often on your typical weekend bike tour.
Spurcycle is nice, but the sound is very tinny.

It is higher pitched and piercing in comparison - in this way pedestrians may find it more recognisable and 'urgent' in comparison to bells with a warmer and smoother tone.
@MGL83
2 жыл бұрын
@@bicyclesnetau True, but the downside is that old people hear high tones less, and it's more annoying to use. I think I'd rather use something nicer to the ear. The classic old style bell sound (I don't know how it's called. ding-a-ling? :D) would be ideal, but those bells tend to rattle a lot while riding bumps.
I have the spurcycle the suzu one sounds great bit to large
* looks at my bike with the $2 "piece of junk" bell * Yep time for an upgrade 😅

The Crane Riten is a much better “traditional” bell
Great comparison! I need a bell that cars can hear (horns or other devices aren’t allowed in my country)… does such a thing exist?
@bicyclesnetau
10 ай бұрын
I think the answer here is unfortunately 'no'. The airhorns are effective and are a way to get people in vehicles to actually here you as bells will not work... unless they have their window open. Even then with distance and other noise bells are ineffective. There is an electronic horn called, if I recall, hornit which has a claimed 140db. This takes batteries and may also have legal restrictions. Though the actual problem here is the legal restrictions (which exist in many countries) that regulate bike riders against an effective bell. To be fair, you don't want to use a loud horn for pedestrians or other bike riders, but if you want a horn for use in traffic that other vehicles can hear - it feels questionable that the law will block bike riders from these.
@MinhCakesOfficial

@@bicyclesnetau Thank you for taking the time to reply! Yes, Hornit and AirZound are horns, which only motored bikes may use. I would never honk at pedestrians. I really just want to honk at cars because drivers can be so unaware of bicycles and often put me in dangerous situations. i guess I'll keep yelling and screaming at them, I know they can hear THAT!

Spurcycle is king
No bell test is complete without the inclusion of the bell made by The English Lion Bell Works. Trust me, it'll trump the rest.
I run the knog luxe and have done for a few years now. The hammer mech has grown tired and Its always been frustratingly dull in my opinion. Not worth the money. It does look nice, but that's as far as it goes. It's useless for my commute.
my bell broke because the hammer was made from plastic. Want to buy something that isn't going to be landfill after a short period of use.
The takeaway here is get the clown horn for your bike.
Worth to more that the colored bells will lose sound and sustain compared to bare metal
While I love my Spurcycle's clarity and sustain its pitch is simply too high for old people.
When I baught a Bicycle From "Decathlon" the "Junk Bell" Was already fitted on as it came with the bell. The "Junk Bell" Is Really a piece of crap, It is difficult to strike when riding your Bike and when you manages to strike it makes a soft sound. with that bell it's just a toy on a toy, I mean it's a toy bell fitted on your kid's toy bike! This is from my personal Experience
And now to sth. completely different...
I bought Knog Oi and no pedestrian can hear it, and also it hurts my finger, when I try to ring a few times. Lovely design, but useless.
@bicyclesnetau
Жыл бұрын
Surprised that it hurts your finger. With these 'hammer strike' type of bells, more force does not always get you a louder ring. With pedestrians, sometimes they simply won't hear any bells. They are in their well and not receptive, hard or hearing or a loud or soft bell competes with other ambient noise. Can depend on the location and situation. The older style bells with the 'cling-a-ling-a-ling' can give you more change for recognisability (arhhh... bike bell) compared to bells with a single ring or chime. Air horns are often very effective for capturing attention (and you may get noticed by drivers)... but can also be rude and shock pedestrians. When pedestrians hear a warning (from a regular or loud bell) they sometimes move out of the way... but sometimes get confused and move directly in the way. I can agree that a louder bell can give you a better change of being heard, though other factors beyond like these ones can still impact the effect.
Knog is all style, no substance.
I like the “ring” sound of the classic bell much more than the “ding” sound of the modern ones. Unfortunately, your classic bell here is broken. It sounds nowhere like the traditional classic bell. It’s a mystery to me how you let a broken classic bell be part of the test. Don’t you peer review your videos before you ask the public to spend time on them?
@bicyclesnetau
2 жыл бұрын
The bell I used is almost 90 years old so has probably seen better days. The public is free to choose whether to watch the videos and in the comments over the last year, I didn't spot any other concerns about the bell. Also, it is a reference where it is now difficult to buy any new, quality bells of that style (you can get them, but usually junk type bells) and higher quality bells are usually the hammer-strike style.

@@bicyclesnetau You might consider to include the Crane Ritten bell in your review, it is a quality built old fashioned bell with a nice ring to it.
