    I wonder if you could improve the oi small. The knob mutes it alot. And adding a brass point to the knob should enhance the volume and purity of the tone. I just bough one to change my classic Dutch bell (speaking of loud, but also has a huge size).

    I like more a jingling sound than a stationary resinence ring. Most of these bells have a high pitch ring but do not cycle their resinence to get a ching ching ding a ling resinence ring which greets pedestrians to a melody.

    Spurcycle bell is superb although note the metal clasps are too large for placing near the grips on a standard bar (e.g. Jones H-bar). Need to use a zip tie.

    I run the knog luxe and have done for a few years now. The hammer mech has grown tired and Its always been frustratingly dull in my opinion. Not worth the money. It does look nice, but that's as far as it goes. It's useless for my commute.

    In some countries - it is not legal for a bicycle rider to use an air horn. If this is legal in your country and you need a solution that is loud enough for people in motor vehicles, then look for an air horn. AirZound is a brand I used, very effective and it is inflated with a bicycle pump. This means it will eventually run out and won't work when there is no more pressure left. However these air horns are not good around pedestrians who often are shocked and may remain standing and confused than clear the way. In this case combining a regular bell and the air horn is a good compromise. There are also electronic bells that claim to be louder. However I think they are still too quite for drivers of motor vehicles to hear and the electronic sound is unusual - it doesn't sound like a 'alert' like a bell or air horn which I think impacts the effectivity.

    Repeated listenings to the Knog Oi types make my head hurt, damnit. I wanted that style. But their tones & pitch (or something) reverb all around my cranium & then, for the ultimate in discomfort, linger there noticeably longer than any others🫨

    The problem I've had with the Spurcycle one is that the tone is just too high. Older people don't hear it. And those are the people you encounter most often on your typical weekend bike tour.

    Remember one simple principle: Decibel ratings are a magnitude scale, meaning that for every 10 decibels the sound increases tenfold. A 70 decibel bell is 10× louder than a 60 decibel bell. As a rule of thumb, a 3 dB increase doubles volume, so a 66 dB sound is about 4× louder than a 60 dB sound.

  • @R0bsterb0Y
    @R0bsterb0YАй бұрын

    The explanation of yours is quiet good, but your values are wrong. The decibel ratings are a log2 based value, not a log10 based value like magnitude of earthquakes. So every 10 decibels "more", the sound-intensity doubles: 50 decibel ist "double as loud" als 40 decibel.

  • @cadriver2570
    @cadriver25707 ай бұрын

    The ear is very sensitive to this frequency range so they don't have to measure loud on a dB meter to be effective. I personally find the piercing bells to be just that, overly harsh.

    When I baught a Bicycle From "Decathlon" the "Junk Bell" Was already fitted on as it came with the bell. The "Junk Bell" Is Really a piece of crap, It is difficult to strike when riding your Bike and when you manages to strike it makes a soft sound. with that bell it's just a toy on a toy, I mean it's a toy bell fitted on your kid's toy bike! This is from my personal Experience

    A critical test is the subzero test. Plastics aren't very elastic in frigid air. Eg, #2 is total garbage. It won't work at all in freezing weather.

    The English made Lion Bellworks bells are the loudest, best sounding, longest ringing and best looking, by far. Not to mention being about half the price of the overpriced Spurcycle bell which isn't any louder than my older tiny Cateye bell. But when in doubt and cycling in the city among vehicles with their windows rolled up and half asleep drivers, the AirZound horn can be a lifesaver. I gave a blast when a tow truck driver was intending to blow through a 4-way stop, and the driver was so startled and hit his brakes so hard that he jerked/bounced forward in his seat as his truck slammed to a stop. The AirZound is louder than our city's transit bus horns, so it can be useful.

    Great comparison! I need a bell that cars can hear (horns or other devices aren’t allowed in my country)… does such a thing exist?

  • @bicyclesnetau
    @bicyclesnetau11 ай бұрын

    I think the answer here is unfortunately 'no'. The airhorns are effective and are a way to get people in vehicles to actually here you as bells will not work... unless they have their window open. Even then with distance and other noise bells are ineffective. There is an electronic horn called, if I recall, hornit which has a claimed 140db. This takes batteries and may also have legal restrictions. Though the actual problem here is the legal restrictions (which exist in many countries) that regulate bike riders against an effective bell. To be fair, you don't want to use a loud horn for pedestrians or other bike riders, but if you want a horn for use in traffic that other vehicles can hear - it feels questionable that the law will block bike riders from these.

  • @MinhCakesOfficial
    @MinhCakesOfficial11 ай бұрын

    @@bicyclesnetau Thank you for taking the time to reply! Yes, Hornit and AirZound are horns, which only motored bikes may use. I would never honk at pedestrians. I really just want to honk at cars because drivers can be so unaware of bicycles and often put me in dangerous situations. i guess I'll keep yelling and screaming at them, I know they can hear THAT!

  • @bicyclesnetau
    @bicyclesnetau Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your question. It is a wireless system to change gears. The front gear shifters sends the up / down shift commands wirelesslt to the front / rear derailleur. This means there are no longer shifting cables required and can also mean that 'electronically' the shifting can (be partly) automatically calibrate / finetuned (compared to mechanical shifting which is only manual). Another advantage is that only a light tap is needed for shifting. The downsides are that batteries are needed and require recharging. The SRAM electronic shifting has gone through a number of iterations and improvements since the original release and electronic shifting tends to also be released across different models (and not only the top-level groupset).

    I bought Knog Oi and no pedestrian can hear it, and also it hurts my finger, when I try to ring a few times. Lovely design, but useless.

  • @bicyclesnetau
    @bicyclesnetau Жыл бұрын

    Surprised that it hurts your finger. With these 'hammer strike' type of bells, more force does not always get you a louder ring. With pedestrians, sometimes they simply won't hear any bells. They are in their well and not receptive, hard or hearing or a loud or soft bell competes with other ambient noise. Can depend on the location and situation. The older style bells with the 'cling-a-ling-a-ling' can give you more change for recognisability (arhhh... bike bell) compared to bells with a single ring or chime. Air horns are often very effective for capturing attention (and you may get noticed by drivers)... but can also be rude and shock pedestrians. When pedestrians hear a warning (from a regular or loud bell) they sometimes move out of the way... but sometimes get confused and move directly in the way. I can agree that a louder bell can give you a better change of being heard, though other factors beyond like these ones can still impact the effect.

    I have the Spurcycle bell on both of my bikes. They are mounted on the right side drop bar and work great to alert people I am approaching. The company stands by their product. One of the bells had lost the loudness after a couple of years. So, I shipped it back to Spurcycle and they repaired it, free of charge. Not only does their bell sound great it is very compact which is a priority compared to other bells.

    The large brass Crane bell is the best I've found so far, having tried a few, including Spurcycle. In fact the Spurcycle bell is excellent, but does't carry as well as the Crane in my experience. The Crane is also mellower even though it's louder. But they're definitely both very good products.
