I saw a guy with 5 different bells he dinged two and sounded like a doorbell… I loved it

Ha ha. Maybe that is the answer. Not very aero though.
I was out for a walk up Mt Eden the other day and there was this totally obnoxious guy riding a mountain bike with 4 bells and a horrible alarm thing. Gosh he was so annoying.

Good for him!
I tried lots of bells including the Rockbros electronic bell. Around my neighborhood the paved shared trails are half full of elderly and they often would stop and turn with the siren noise instead of step to the right.

It is tricky what some people are alerted by. The sirens might affect their hearing aids 🙂
You can’t beat a lovely bit of brass! It sustains longer.

You sure can't, that crisp ring.
I have been searching for a bell and my hearing is so bad I never heard one in your video. I also have my hearing aids on. Thanks for your video.

Wow, sorry about that. The high pitched brass bells might work best for you.
one of the most melodic sounding bells is the Lion Bell Works from England . a very pleasant tone that lingers quite long . similar to the Crane bells .

Hopefully more than a bell Sophie, I hope the weather is getting better over in the UK?
Thanks, all my bikes before today didn't come with a bell so I'd never used a cheap stock bell before today. The bell I got on my other bike uses a pull lever & as it looked similar I thought the lever was broken. It wasn't until I watched you just now that I realized it's a flick hammer. I feel silly now but at least I know how to use the bell now & I don't have to pay $ to replace the bell especially after dropping $ on a new bike.

Glad it helped, enjoy some pedestrian free rides.
I'm rocking the Rockbros electric bell with the whistle sound. Its a hit with me and very effective.😎

Great, yes the whistle sound is probably the most natural of the sounds and might grab pedestrians attention.
I actually use 2 bells. Normal one for pedestrians and electronic for cars
@jaselikesbikes

That electronic one must be loud! I guess you will also need it for those wearing headphones.
I find a nice, "ping" or a classic, "tring" to be more polite than the sounding of a siren a me, I have a classic bell, it is a little larger but the tring sound seems to get peoples attention better, a siren or horn seems a bit rude to me- I don't like it when I am the pedestrian! For bad drivers or those with loud ear buds, a car horn on your bike is ideal, but for normal polite requests to pass, I like the classic bike bell as it has more sustain and is louder than most bells.

Hi Gamble, yes I think I agree with you. A nice classic "ping or tring" seems somehow less aggressive.
I use to have a clown horn on my mountain bike. It warned ppl and made then smile 😂

Ha ha. Perfect, I want one!
Great vid. Interesting location (by the coast?) with paths next to motorways. Mainly flat, tarmac paths, so a basic non-mountain bike would be fine here!
@jaselikesbikes

Thanks! Yes very fine here. I have a road bike and MTB. I like the MTB for road rides sometimes as yes it is slower but I can get a workout in without having to do a longer route. It is Auckland, New Zealand.
Good stuff. Must admit I have resorted to some road rides recently. Must get a bell.

@@jaselikesbikes I agree. If I don't ride I get very grumpy.
I used to use one of those electric horns for a year but people never responded to it so I switched over back to the good old bell! Not sure if it was cuse people thought it was maybe an alarm, car or something else though but I wouldnt use them despite how loud they are.

Yes I agree they don't really sound like a bell.
Me, searching for bike bell videos: "Oh I know that guy!" Still liking the Kogg? I'm struggling to find a bell that works on a roadie. :/

Ha ha. Hi Justin. Yes the Kogg I rate. It is the sleekest and sounds pretty good.
I lost my bell when I had to turn it upside down to put the chain back on in the field. So, I need one that will stay on! What are your suggestions?

I think the knog oi luxe bell is the one for you, looks neat and fits around the bars.
I ordered the knog oi luxe bell but large after measuring the handle bars of my Aventon Adventure 2. According to Amazon, regular size one fit. Can you confirm the size of your handle bar? We prefer the small size sound compared to large.

My bars ar 35mm on the video.
which one of these will still work in the rain? that's a pretty big problem for most bells!
@jaselikesbikes
2 жыл бұрын
The rain may well drown out thre noise but the brass bells should still work.
i feel modern bike bells should have a visual factor to them too, for the headphones users or the deaf, you know just a short flash of a bright light or laser .
@jaselikesbikes

I couldn’t agree more. A lot of the time a bell is useless when a pedestrian has headphones on.
I like sound of the free one best.

Did you test all 3 sounds the Rockbros bell had on people
@jaselikesbikes
Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, yes but they sound so different to a normal bell that people didn't react, I think they may have reacted more to the whistle sound than the other sounds.
Using Crane bells. Brass dome best. I just got a painted Crane black paint with white bird $28 Amazon, but aluminun dome does not resonate or as load as brass. Acceptable though. Crane has a youtube video all their bells. Cranes are large and heavier.
@jaselikesbikes
2 жыл бұрын
Yes brass is definately better. I did have a Crane bell but didn't like the fiddly system it used to mount it.
@CB-ld8no
2 жыл бұрын
@@jaselikesbikes Old school attachment. Possibly no desire for retooling assembly lone. Use a thin rubber piece to protect handlebar. Smaller dome Crane now has a 1980's style aluminum mounting system.
Unfortunately with so many pedestrians wearing head phones or seemingly hard of hearing, all those bells are barely adequate.

Hi Heath, that is very true but they will still complain if you don't use one. We can't win.
Good video but the best horn is the motorbike horn... It's the only one that makes people pay attention... Greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴 👍🏻 😃

Hoooaaa... I don’t understand why pedestrians and runners have headphones on. I am based in South Korea and there are a lot of pedestrians and bicycle newbies do that as well here. I don’t want to ring them with the annoying electric sound, but I must do it to avoid further trouble. I hope pedestrians let their ears open so I can ring them with the gentle brass bell or say hello and everyone's happy out there.

@fadedletter00 agreed. We get the stern looks when we give them a fright. Maybe the bone conducting headphones would work for them too.

The digital one is horrible. Unless you want to give a pedestrian a heart attack
@jaselikesbikes

Ha ha. Yes, it didn't stay on the bike.
So there are all these rules for people riding bikes on paths, they should 100% make a rule that pedestrians on paths can only use pass-though headphones (should be a law when being a pedestrian anywhere actually). It is sooo damn dangerous for people to be around any other moving objects when they can't hear what is going on around them!!!
@jaselikesbikes

Yes agreed it is so difficult for a cyclist when pedestrians are talking, walking their dogs and using headphones.
i bought a rockbros horn and thay are crap 1 out of 10 people hear it thay are a waste of money mate

I despise headphones on people walking or jogging -- it's unwise and unsafe to intentionally delete one's hearing on a bikeway or roadway.

Do you know what the best bike bell really is? An air horn. I put one on my bike and it's really loud, moreover it scares people out of the way whether they have headphones on or not because they think it is an articulated lorry coming up behind them.🔈🚲🔉🚙🔊🚆
