Where We Get Drinking Water at -71°C (-95°F)? Yakutia, Siberia

Because of the harsh climate in Yakutia, in most of the rural areas there are no water treatment facilities, and pipes freeze during the long winter, making ice from the lake the main source of drinking water...

In the United States this is what we used to do before we created refrigerators. The ice trade, also known as the frozen water trade, was a 19th-century and early-20th-century industry, centering on the east coast of the United States and Norway, involving the large-scale harvesting, transport and sale of natural ice, and later the making and sale of artificial ice, for domestic consumption and commercial purposes. Ice was cut from the surface of ponds and streams, then stored in ice houses, before being sent on by ship, barge or railroad to its final destination around the world. Networks of ice wagons were typically used to distribute the product to the final domestic and smaller commercial customers. The ice trade revolutionized the U.S. meat, vegetable and fruit industries, enabled significant growth in the fishing industry, and encouraged the introduction of a range of new drinks and foods. It only flourished in the time between the development of reliable transportation and the development of widespread mechanical refrigeration.

I've been complaining a lot about my life lately since all I do is basically study all day everyday including week ends. I really thought my life was hard, but when I see what obstacles people have to face just to be able to do things that I take for granted in other countries, I truly realize that my life isn't that hard and I should be more grateful of it haha Thank you for your videos, they allow me to see the world in a bigger picture ( if that makes any sense ) and relativize about my small problems !

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t and shouldn’t complain about things that bother you. Life comes with all sorts of challenges. It’s good to be grateful about the things you have. But just because someone has it “more difficult” than you, doesn’t mean you need to discount the things that you struggle with.

@@F0re5tMan not a very good comparison considering that we could just like animals eat snow if we were desperate, but ice is just a lot cleaner. Idk about that family, to me harvesting ice every weekend sounds frustrating kinda. We harvest them only once during winter. Work an entire day and its usually just me and father, but we get enough for entire year. We will just need to put them in the basement before they start melting in march. Ice in the basement wont melt even when its +35 outside because its always cold underground because of the permafrost. I am also yakut.

This hardwork is a nice bonding for the family that makes their relationship strong. Less distractions from the outside world. When life is easier and convenient, most men found themselves succumb in bad things like gambling, womanizing, alcohol and drug addiction that leads to marriage troubles. GOD bless Yakutz. Thänks a lot Kiun for showing us your lifestyle. Greetings from Belle in the Philippines.

I have so much respect for people living in such harsh environments! We should appreciate easy access to water and warmth more. I would never survive in this cold, I would die from an illness and depression within weeks 😂 I get sick when it gets below 10°C here already and there’s wind blowing when I don’t have a scarf on and the cold makes me almost depressed every year. They’re so strong! 🙌🏻

In fact, Ice is classified as a mineral because it is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a crystalline structure and a definite chemical composition, which is H2O in a solid state, so "Ice Mining" sounds pretty neat, tho ice is harvested through the process of extracting ice from natural sources typically involves cutting, rather than mining it from the ground like other minerals.

🥶🥶☃☃🎅🎅😊😊👏👏 ---------- Greetings from Scotland! Here, I usually ask my wife "Do you fancy a nice warm cup of tea?" and she usually answers "OK, if I fill the kettle and put it on, will you make the tea?" It's ever so slightly different there! 😂😂 There you may have to walk miles with your family in very low temperatures, walk onto a frozen lake, cut some blocks of ice, drag them back home, wait until it melts, THEN fill the kettle and boil it!!! 😲 We don't have any concept of what life is like in some parts of this world. BUT you have re-educated us by showing us these wonderful videos of life in Yakutia Kiun! Thank you so much young lady! 🥶🥶☃☃🎅🎅😊😊👏👏

Whilst I am home in the Scottish Highlands I am lucky with regards to water as I'm camped by a stream and if that gets too low then there is also a lake that is 12 miles long. However, as labour intensive as that ice gathering looked it wasn't left to just one person to do, the whole family got involved and that is very special. I wish I was part of a family like that, I wish I just had a family at all.
