When the "Passive Night" Grabs You ~ Shinzen Young with Stephanie Nash

ON a retreat in Jan 2022, Stephanie asks Shinzen about moving through the world from the perspective of awareness. Shinzen says his answer is "One Finger Zen' - and he describes the "paradigm shift" that can happen with practice.

So happy to have Shinzen back in this channel!!!!!!! Thanks ! I was reading a book "The finders" by Jeffery Martin, and asking myself how someone like Shinzen seems so emotional, he said once he didn't like people, well, now the communication is great, impressive.

“Stickyness feeling less sticky,” “Different flavors of equanimity,” “Figure ground reversal.” I guarantee there’s not a single person here who has the slightest idea what their random-words-put-together mean. Talk about making a simple thing unintelligible.

I’ve experienced the “figure ground reversal” he’s talking about a few times and it’s beautiful. One simple example is to ask yourself this question: do concepts emerge from underlying reality, or is underlying reality made of our concepts?’ (Is the music more real than the sheet music, or is the sheet music more real than the song?) Obviously the former is true, yet we live EXPERIENTIALLY as if the latter were true. That being said, you can viscerally reverse this perspective; the figures you thought were the ground of your being are seen to be merely figures. The true ground of being is too close to touch and “figure” about. I really appreciate Shinzen putting words to these experiences that capture their ineffability as efficiently as words are able to. Personally I love these little phrases. But if you’ve never seen the color blue, hearing the word “blue” isn’t going to do anything for you.

So "Stickyness feeling less sticky" would be that the things that usually draw our attention & energy don't seem to have the same pull. They are still there - just not "sticky". "Different flavors of equanimity" was a guess on Steph's part, as she was experience a kind of freedom & acceptance with different methods/strategies/techniques and wasn't sure if one was "deeper" (i.e. processing on a deeper level) or if it was simply a "different flavor of equanimity" - as how one feels when doing a relaxation meditation may bring a different flavor than a meditation focusing on flow - or prayer may provide a different flavor of acceptance than chanting or meditation. That's all. And "Figure ground reversal" is simply how meditation can become what you do in your life sometimes can SHIFT to what your life IS. Is that helpful?

I'd argue that anyone watching these videos and *doing the practice* actually has a pretty good idea what those words mean. It's just really hard to put that into words, but if you have experienced what they are referring to, you know exactly what they mean. If you don't practice it, then you don't get to experience it, therefore none of it will make any sense.

If you do the practice you'll eventually know exactly what he's talking about
