    As a beginner, I really appreciate this type of video. In case anyone missed it, Hyunwoo’s tip to anyone wanting to learn Korean (or anything, really) was: “It’s not about being fluent. It’s about WANTING to learn more and more everyday.” That’s the right mindset. If I may add to this, if your approach isn’t working for you, don’t throw away your goal, change your approach.

    I am so happy he made this point. The strength of a teacher is to be able to help the students who are really struggling, instead of expecting them to be perfect on the first try. Josh treats Ollie more as a parent (with judgement and disappointment) rather than as a teacher (with compassion).

  • @dcardigan13

    @dcardigan13

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@al11196 Disappointed parent?! That's a bit harsh (and depressing when you imagine an image of a disappointed parent). Isn't it more like a more knowledgeable guy teaching his best friend and teasing him along the way? There were many times when Josh smiled like a proud father after all when Ollie gets its right, and more often than not, he just makes fun of Ollie's face and sounds when he stumbles as they study. The way Josh reacts is like how close friends would react when one of them makes a mistake: laugh and tease them about it before moving on and helping them out/correcting them. I will agree though that Josh is not really like a professional teacher. He's more lenient and indulgent compared to a teacher; sure, teacher's are compassionate, but they wouldn't let their student make several jokes in succession nor encourage them while they're studying. And when your student admits they forgot to practice or study, as a teacher, you'd refrain to be as blunt or show your disappointment as obviously as Josh would. Rather than a teacher, Josh is really more like a friend helping their own friend to study. But as an audience of Jolly's channel, I wouldn't really like it if their study videos lose their comedic aspect.

    yes i dont think any of the teachers have been very patient. but I think Ollie also mucks around and goes off on tangents for the laughs. if the cameras were off the lesson might look very different, or it might not, I don't know. But the teacher inside me just wants to teach him myself. except I don't speak Korean 😅

    I don't think you should project your own feelings onto Ollie. He chooses to make these videos, he's the one who wanted to learn this way, and these videos are clearly for entertainment purposes. Ollie obviously has a lot of self confidence for him to decide to learn this way, and he obviously enjoys mucking around. Sure, he might learn faster with someone serious, but that wouldn't be as fun for us to watch and clearly, that's not what Ollie wants or he would have just done that.

'좋아하다'는 문장의 '주체'가 특정 대상을 좋아한다라는 의미로 품사는 동사에 해당하고, 대상은 목적어로 쓰입니다. 올리의 한국어 공부 영상을 처음부터 봐왔기에 이 댓글이 도움이 되길 바랍니다. 올리가 조쉬처럼 한국어를 유창하게 하는 날까지 항상 응원하겠습니다.!!! 올리 힘내요!!!

    This vedio got me thinking about the difference between '벌써' and '이미'. I think what Hyeonwoo taught him is not quite perfectly correct so those need more explation. *벌써(Beolsseo) : * 기대보다 빠르게 벌어진 어떤 일의 *속도*에 중점. 일의 발생시점이 *현재* 혹은 과거부터 현재까지 이어져옴.(->일이 당장 일어났다는 특성과 속도에 대한 감탄의 뉘앙스 때문에 흔히들 '벌써'만 놀람을 함의하고 있다고 생각하지만 때에 따라 '이미'도 놀라움을 표현할 수 있음.) 대화중에 놀람의 반응으로서 단어만 단독으로 쓰일때에는 '벌써'만 사용하고 '이미'는 단독으로 사용하는 일이 거의 없다고 볼 수 있음. Focused more on the *speed* of a certain event occurred faster than expected. And the time of the occurrence is mostly *present* or past leading upto present. (-> So I guess the attribute of *speed* and *present* make many people think '벌써' only shows nuance of surprise emotion, but '이미' can also express surprise in it's appropriate situation.) When saying the word only single-handedly as a surprised response in conversation, '벌써' is OK to use but '이미' is awkward. *이미(Imi) :* 벌어진 일의 *종결 또는 결정된 사실 자체*에 중점. 일의 발생시점이 *대과거* 혹은 주로 현재 직전까지의 과거. 일이 벌어지고 완결된 사실과 관련하여 뒤에 이어지는 내용이 *걱정, 후회, 되돌릴수 없음*을 나타낼때에 더 적합. "이미 늦어버렸다." 와 같은 특정 구문에서는 오직 '이미'만 사용이 적합하며 '벌써'로 대체될 수 없음. Focused more on the *fact that the event was done/finished/completed*. And the time of occurrence is mostly *past-participle* or past leading upto right before the present moment. Much more appropriate to be used when some context of *regret, worries, irrevocablilty* follows the completion of event. When saying "It's too late", only '이미' is OK to use and cannot be replaced with '벌써'. *[ EXAMPLES BELOW ]* =========================== *(1) When both sound natural* A : How much have you done your report?(How's the report going?) A : 리포트 얼마나 했어?(리포트는 어떻게 되가?) B : I've *already* finished it all last week. B : 지난주에 *이미* 다 끝마쳤어. A : what? *Already*? A : 뭐? *벌써*? or 뭐? *이미* 다했다고? (-이미?- 와 같이 단독사용은 어색/single use of 이미 is awkard) => '이미' also can express surprised reaction like '벌써'. The suttle point is that '벌써' is more about the speed whereas '이미' is more about the fact it's all taken care of. =========================== *(2) When only '벌써' makes sense* A : It's time for me to take off now. A : 나 이제 갈 시간이다. B : *Already* !? B : *벌써* !? (-이미- !? : X) => As it's just happening *now*, '이미' is wrong to use here, let along to say it's also awkward to be said single-handedly. =========================== *(3) When '벌써' suits much better than '이미'. '이미' can also be used but a little awkward and doesn't sound as good as '벌써' *. A : It's been a while! How old are you now? Ten? A : 오랜만이네! 지금 니가 몇살이지? 열살? B : I'm eleven now, uncle Josh. B : 이제 열한살이에요, 조쉬삼촌. A : Wow, is it *already* like that? A : 와, *벌써* 그렇게 돼? 와, (이미) 그렇게 됐어? ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ A : Wait, is it *already* October now? Time flies! A: 잠깐, *벌써(이미)* 10월이야 지금? 시간 빠르네. =========================== *(3) When the sentence is followed by another context of regret, worries, irreversibility/unwanted change or with past occurrence, '이미' sounds way better and is a perfect match.* In this case '벌써' would still make good sense and totally OK, although it just wouldn't sound as good as '이미' and also allude that the event's quickly happend/rushed. '이미' doesn't necessarily have to be quick event. ** A : I'd like to learn a new language but I'm *already* fifty now, so it kinda feels like a little overdue. I wish I had started it earlier. A : 새로운 언어를 배우고 싶지만 내 나이가 *이미(벌써)* 쉰이나 돼서 무언가 새로 시작하기 늦은 감이 있다. 더 일찍 시작했더라면 좋았을텐데. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ ** A : As I've *aleady* removed the tag from the new shirt, I cannot get it refunded anymore. A : 새로 산 셔츠의 택을 *이미(벌써)* 제거해버려서 더이상 환불받을 수 없게 돼버렸다. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ ** A : I've *already* sent out itineraries to participants for the event, but due to unexpected circumstances I need to reschedule all over again and resend notifications to them. A : *이미(벌써)* 행사 참가자들에게 일정 안내문자를 다 돌렸는데 불가피한 상황으로 계획에 차질이 생기는 바람에 처음부터 새로운 계획을 짜서 재안내를 해야하는 상황이다. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ ** A : Claimants have to fill out and submit this form to apply for the grant. Oh, you *already* did all that beforehand and brought it up here. Good. A : 보조금 신청하시려면 이 양식을 작성하셔서 제출해주셔야 해요. 아, *이미(벌써)* 사전에 다 작성해가지고 가져오셨군요. 잘하셨어요. =========================== *(4) When only '이미' makes sense* =sentences like "lt's (already) *too* late" A : I rushed to the hospital as soon as I heard the news my granma was critically ill, but when I got there it was *too* late. (She passed away) A : 할머니께서 위독하시다는 소식을 듣자마자 정신없이 병원으로 달려왔지만, 내가 도착했을때는 *이미* 늦었다. (할머니께서 이미 숨을 거두신 후였다.) ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ A : I've *already* come *too* far to go back. A : 돌아가기엔 이미 너무 멀리 와버렸어. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ A : 지금 출발해서 최대한 빨리 가더라도 제 시간에 도착 못할거야. *이미* 늦었어.(소용 없어) A : Even if we leave now and try to go as fast as we can, we won't make it. It's *too* late *already*.(There's no hope/use of doing that.) ===========================
