I can't blame them. Making a decent livelihood with music is incredibly hard, let alone with metal, you would be surprised to see that there are even famous metal musicians that still hold a normal job to pay the bills. At the time Nu-Metal was exploding so they took their chance.

Deftones were definitely a nu metal band it's just they had more left field influences coming from the indie and goth scenes of the 80s. They also sound a bit like 90s post hardcore like helmet and quicksand.

Saw thm live in October, they were awesome! they still play The Burning Red hit "From this day" and I realized I still know all the lyric by heart, every word just came to me.

Well. Slayer also went through Nu Metal in 1998 and 2001 on a lesser scale. My first album was "Through the Ashes of Empires", so I did not even get "Burn my Eyes". Instead, waited for "The Blackening" and got it. "Who the fuck listens to Dope?" - Static-X, obviously. 🤣

It's not even that I have a problem with Nu-metal it just felt like such an odd shift from a band I was a pretty big fan of and had seen live in '99, the exact tour you mentioned. I still have the ticket stub I believe I showed off in my review too ha! The More Things Change had such unique riffs I swear, and Burn My Eyes of course was heavy as fuck. The chimes especially, and I can rarely seem to get my guitar perfectly in tune with them! No matter how hard I try I can't get much into The Burning Red. It's not like it's a terrible album, but it's so goddamn different than what I was used to at the time, it never made that impact on me the way the others did. "Sub-par rapping with teenage conflict noise made for America's angry junior high kids." That is literally spot on lmao.

Back in the 90s, as a fan of Burn My Eyes, I definitely did not like their turn to nu-metal. But the thing that stands out about Machine Head, is that Burn My Eyes is the only album from the mid-90s that I really liked at the time but today I can no longer see what I enjoyed about it anymore. Hell, I can even still see why I loved Korn's debut back then. So, Machine Head were never really any good, they just got worse.

I listened to Burn My Eyes and liked it but man the nu-metal stuff (especially that more recent one) actively put me off the band. Thankfully, I decided to listen to The Blackening which was amazing. Tbh I dont listen to nu-metal stuff anymore so thats a big reason why it put me off. I had a phase of enjoying a few of them but I like my more "raw/pure" kind of metal. If you havent at the very least check out The Blackening because that album was too good to be true

But I must say, that said album is pretty, pretty good. The rest of their shit I don't care for, there is a good song here and there. But as a whole, only "Burn my eyes" made me headbang and stomp! And to tell you the truth, I find Rob a bit annoying, I don't know the guy, he may be the sweetest human being alive, but from all the interviews, podcasts, and social media presence, he gives off that pompous, pretentious, I'm better than you vibe.
