What We've Been Reading || Our May 2024 Reads and Wrap-Up!

Our May 2024 reads ran the gamut from five star to fascinating to frazzling. May was a crazy month here, and it's funny how our book shelf reflected that! We had one Catholic home run alongside a couple of unusual Catholic reads that left us feeling more than a little unsettled. Tour our May bookshelf with us and see what you think!

Two faves are In Shock about a doctor’s experience as a patient, does have some spiritual aspects of her experience, very interesting. Life in a Jar about Irena Sendler who saved many hundreds of Jewish kids and babies from Warsaw ghetto.

These all sound so interesting. I can't wait for your full review of the book on worrying. The mango space book reminds me of our Yup'ik belief & tradition that we do every time a baby is born. The baby is given the Yup'ik name of the last person who passed & is believed to be the person. One of my Yup'ik names is after a man from a village upriver who drowned in the Yukon river. For as long as I can remember, I've always been afraid of the river. My mom said that when I was a toddler, they'd have to cover me up so that I wouldn't see that we're going on the boat to our fish camp otherwise I'd throw a fit, crying. The river is such a major part of our lives & livelihood; everyday someone is out there hunting, fishing, logging or traveling to fish camps or other villages. I haven't been out on the river since 2005. Thank you for being here for us !

I picked up Saint JP the Great His 5 Loves by Jason Evert. It was a lovely read. For those who have followed JP2 many of the stories are familiar but the way ge presented them were always like reading them for the first time. I really enjoyed the book. Definitely a book to re-read❤ Now I will continue with He Leadeth me😅

I looked Theodore Maynard up on Amazon, and he has a biography of St. Francis! Also a cookbook . . .

We are dying… he also wrote about St. Philip Neri and several others! Some of his work is available on Hoopla in ebook format (including the cookbook!- which looks quite unusual, lol). This may be our Theodor Maynard summer

I bought My Life with Mother Angelica by Sister M. Raphael PCPA when we visited OLAM Shrine last month. I love it. It has so many neat details about Mother Angelica and the development of their monastery in Alabama. I'm not finished yet. I've got too many books going on at once. 😂

Not a book but Catholic apologist Jimmy Akin did a Mysterious World podcast episode on LaSalette that I recommend. After he presents the evidence for and against, it wasn't very convincing for me.

Ohh- thank you! We are definitely going to listen. Can't wait to hear his take on it all. The book mentions that St. John Vianney was skeptical after speaking with Maximin directly; he would not longer bless holy cards or medals from La Salette. But eight years later he changed his mind after his prayers for confirmation were answered. It's all a lot to take in!

So, we listened to his episode- it was very good, and we felt better knowing that Jimmy is also unsure in light of the new documents that were found in the Vatican archive. He mentioned that the Church has never gone back and reevaluated an approved apparition in a case where new evidence has surfaced. It was very interesting…. makes us wonder.
