What is your favorite Catholic reading style? Which book is you?

I like reading Saint Francis De Sales, Saint Louis De Montfort and Dom Lorenzo Scupoli. I must be a vintage catholic reader.

OK, Theresa- we'll give you that you are a vintage/Marian reader, but you are definitely an adventurous writer! You are a master story teller. "Tortured Souls" is still one of our very favorite books!

A really fantastic breakdown and full of book style ideas to find that one that fits just right. I definitely jive most with the minimalist ones! Mostly because I am so on the go it's hard to get even 4 pages in a sit down reading time with my little guys. Thanks for putting this video together Jennifer!

I read St. Augustine's Confessions and he sounded like someone now a days. Almost read it with a surfer voice😅. Like the minimalist choices. Can't read 1800s books for the same reason ,flowery language. Occasionally I can stick with one to get the gist of it

What a great review of different styles. This was fun. I think I'm a combo of minimalist/modern. Years ago I'd get our daily bread devotional from 1 of our guests at work & my daughter & I did the bible in a year. My dad was Russian orthodox & today is Slaviq/the Russian orthodox Christmas; it is also the 6year anniversary of his passing. The local RO church goes to different homes w/ the star praying & singing for 3days. The host will give them a light snack/beverage or do what my parents did & have a big feast & give out gifts & invite anyone who wants to come. Thank you so very much for keeping us company !

I can’t choose. My favorite devotion is Devine Intimacy (traditionalist) however I am halfway through the Litany of Trust as part of my January 2024 reset! It is so good, exactly what I needed for the period between Epiphany and Lent. I am intrigued by the 30 days with the Irish Mystics. So you tell me!

I'm definitely a minimalist, too. Nor am I a lover of poetry . . . or rather, I like poetry, but only good poetry, in the same way I like cheese, but not Cheez-Whiz.

That is a good way to say it, Margaret. There is poetry, and then there is poetry. Cheez-Whiz is not cheese. I wonder if any of our modern Catholic writers ever write poetry? "A Poem by Fr. Mike Schmitz"?

Thanks so much for this video. Not sure what style I am; I enjoy different kinds of books. I love idea of different novena for each month. Maybe I'll try that. I'll probably go with minimalist style & am going to order a couple of those books. I just finished Catechism in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz & did Bible in a Year last year. Isn't he wonderful?! I wish he'd start another one, maybe with different saints' books. Thanks for mentioning St. Faustina's Diary in a Year. I just started it. I read the Diary & wanted to read it again, so inspiring. I'm devoted to Divine Mercy & have been to the beautiful shrine in Stockbridge, MA a couple times, which is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been (chapel & landscape/views). Also from you, I learned about Dwight Longenecker & was able to get Mystery of the Magi from library. They don't have book about shepherds though. From another person's videos, I learned about "Winter Fire, Christmas with G.K. Chesterton," which I rec'd today. It's a beautiful book & looks interesting. Do you know about "Leaves," a bi-monthly little booklet from Mariannhill Fathers in Dearborn, Michigan? I've received it for years. It's free, only about 22 pps, comes bi-monthly. It has articles, prayers, poems, but best of all, people write in with prayer requests & thanksgivings. I just recently found your channel & have a lot of catching up to do. I so much admire a Catholic mom and daughter sharing & enjoying so much together.

Awesome 😊 I am willing to do a few devotionals this year other than lent and advent. Thanks for the recommendations... I liked also the minimalist style one. But others caught my attention. I hope you have an amazon storefront one day😊.

This was interesting to think about Jennifer! I hadn’t really thought about this intentionally before. I can’t really pin it down-I’ll try most anything and if I deem it productive in some way, I go with it! I have done the St. Joseph 30 day novena a few times and really enjoyed it. The Sr. Maria Pia book has been on my wish list for awhile, so I was happy to hear you talk about it. I got some good ideas from you, as always.🥰

They are all wonderful. We are St. Polycarp fans here. These writers are a bit harder to find in the monthly devotional style that we were reading for this video, though.

Thankyou for sharing this Jennifer. Knowing my style will definitely help in choosing books I would say I'm a minimalist/ Mary reader. I like small books to carry in my bag and fits perfectly with a busy lifestyle. Knowing my style will also help me with my reading to try something new now and again xx
