Saskia is my guru!! I've used a qtip with coconut oil and gently wiped the nostrils and you will see hay dust and sneezing stops. If it continues and keeps sneezing I will take to the vet asap. Upper respiratory issues with small animals can kill them. Don't wait its not worth the death of your pet.

Hey u said conut oil is good to wipe the nose with Q-Tip dose it really work.. I hope so Jacoby only sneezes if he hay dust up his nose and I keep the dust out of his home wow ..often should I clean Jacoby nose with this I will try to night if I have time

Hey I saw this comment and wanted to try this with my guinea pig first before going to a vet because they are expensive. My guinea only just started sneezing after I placed a container of hay with her and jumped in it. Do you know what kind of coconut oil you used?

@@arissasanchez8699 just any coconut oil. 99c store has it now. Big lots has it, walmart has it. I also use it to clean the sides of the mouth, ears and also the pocket of my male. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties and its edible, safe, and it smells good too. You can cook with it , put it in your hair, and also use as a moisturizer after you get out of the shower. Great for your feet to. Be careful you don't slip and fall its slick. Orchard hay might also be less dusty. I give both Timothy and Orchard to mine. I also buy the small treat bales of meadow hay mine like too.

My little boy keeps sneezing only when he eats, turns out he really loves stuffing his nose into the hay and getting it up his nose so I got a new hay rack 😂 he’s kinda moody about it cause he’s not sneezing anymore and turns out he liked sneezing

Tiny Excitements dont worry I monitor him when he eats to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself, plus it’s resolved now since I set up a new hay rack system. I’m only laughing because he gets snappy when I stop him from forcing out sneezes 😊

Yea that’s what my Guinea pigs do they only sneeze when they eat hay 😭Bc they be all up in it

My eldest guinea pig just passed away in February from pneumonia. She would've been 2 in March... I had no idea what the sneezing meant or what it could lead to. So if you're questioning whether you should take your piggy to the vet or not, this is your sign please take them

I just bought a guinea pig 2 days ago. Shes sneezing with mucus. She has a vet appointment today. I bought her from a pet store and wondered why she was 75% off. Shes so precious and loving. No worries. Shes in good hands now. Thanks for the video.

THANK YOU SO MUCH SASKIA - I bought a guinea pig 2 days ago (from a pet store in England) and my guinea began sneezing last night. I found this video and took Fudgy straight to the vet this morning and SURE ENOUGH, my guinea has an upper respiratory infection (he could tell by the breathing) which has not yet turned to pneumonia. The vet feels we have caught the infection early enough and, without finding this video, I would have never known sneezing was bad. Thank you from me and Fudgy, I'm subscribed xx

Guinea pigs are social animals they shouldn't be kept on their own

My guinea pig sneezes around 6-7 times a day. I have taken her to the vet so many times and they can’t find anything wrong with her. She’s as healthy as ever but just sneezes often

@@hannahchamberlain2902 i had to change the bedding to safe paper wool bedding. My guinea pigs have nearly completely stopped sneezing now. They sneeze rarely when they eat and play in the hay. The vets told me that it was a bedding problem and not respiratory because they were still eating and happy.

my piggies stopped sneezing after i switched out bedding for fleece and i had my mother keep an eye on them

Thank you, Saskia. I just got a new little boy and he has been sneezing a bunch for the last week. After seeing this I took him to the vet which thinks its a URI and he's now on antibiotics. I would not have thought to take him to the vet for sneezing. I hope you know how much I appreciate your videos.

Thank you for this video, my eldest guinea pig passed away a week ago. She lived to be 5 years old, which I realized is really lucky considering she came from a big name pet store and I cried a bit from that. The vet said it was from either pneumonia or lung cancer(She went there a month ago to get meds for pneumonia, which we finished all the way). She sneezed every once and awhile for a very long time(over several months), but I though it was totally normal. my guinea pig sneezes but she stills eats and drinks and does normal stuff she sneezes a lot

My vet said they (Guinea pigs) sneeze a few times a day probably because of sniffing hay dust or have from bedding. I hear both my girls sneeze everyday but my vet said it’s normal... They eat, play, sleep just fine

I got a couple guinea pigs myself but just want to comment that you are a very beautiful looking woman. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the video Saskia! My boys have been doing the odd sneeze for a few days now. Since they live in the room with my boyfriends large pc the air gets very dry so i bought a humidifier to see if it helped but this morning still had a couple of sneezes so booked in for a check up tomorrow morning. wish us luck!

update: the vet had a good listen to both of the boys chests and said he couldn't hear anything suspicious and they both seemed in very good health. Advised to continue on with the humidifier, he said it could be the dry air in the room as one of our boys has very dry skin and dandruff in which i do a coconut oil treatment once a wheek (^_^). The vet seems to think it all indicates back to the dry air and to monitor to see if sneezing continues and he will prescribe antibiotics. Haven't heard any sneezes today so fingers crossed. ps: My boyfriend has also downsized his computer to a smaller one)

hey i got my guinea pig (bentley) a few days ago he’s started sneezing about 3 days ago but it got really bad today. he hasn’t been eating has crust in his eyes every day. and today he rested his little head on my stomach like he was really in pain and needed help. i love him lots and my parents ignore it and say it’s normal when i have put hours of research into this. i have a few thousand dollars saved up and it wouldn’t be anything for me to take 200 out to take him to the vet i just would really like to thank you for making this video. it helped let me know something was wrong and helped me spot it. i’ll give a update if he’s ok afterwards or not. idk if you get revenue from video adds but i will for sure watch them all the way through for sure. love sent to you and your piggies💕

Thanks Saskia and Ursula. One of my male piggies sneezes periodically and I have noticed he has some discharge from one nostril at times. I've listened to his breathing and lungs - no crackles or wheezes - so I've been hesitant to take him to the vet. The sneezing and discharge appear to be intermittent but I think I will still get him checked out after watching this video. By the way, I named him Podric after your little guy. I don't know if it's the same spelling but I love the name - it sounds so theatrical (old English) and he's such a little drama pig :-).

my boy guinea pig about 3 years old he is really healthy eats, drinks, grazes on his hay and exercises and most importantly sleeps in the night like the schedule i do if anybody could help but he has been sneezing kind of oftentimes a few times a day but it doesn’t seem like he’s sick at all he just sneezes once in a while

Myn sneeze like I’ve just heard it for the 3rd time since I got them today (3mo the ago) just came to KZread to hear the noise again and I have 4 and now you’ve got me so worried!

Thank you Carol so sweet. I always try and make an effort. Was talking this weekend about how I actually so not look like this every day and only started polishing my nails to hide the dirt underneath them 😍

My guinea has wheezing sounds, sneezes & eye crust. I took it to an expensive small animal hospital yesterday. 7 hours & $200 they said it was Gastasis. I am not satisfied so I am taking him to their extention branch called Zoo- Med when they open tomorrow. I believe they specialize in guineas. I pray he makes it there 🙏

In my experience, the occasional sneeze can be from hay dust or water on the nose from the water bottle. But if it's more that once a day, like you said, it definitely needs a vet. I do have some tricks for checking for nasal discharge. Guinea pigs love to groom themselves so a guinea pig with nasal discharge may not have visible crust on the nose but they will have crusty fur on the inside of the front paws. I also have used a q-tip gently on the outside of the nostril to detect discharge. For dark colored guinea pigs you may not be able to see the discharge visibly, but you'll see it on the q-tip. The tip of the q-tip will be yellow or green or brown or just damp. Guinea pig rarely get viral URIs they are mostly caused by bacteria which is why antibiotics are super important. (I'm also dyslexic and have the same issue with URI/UTI! Lol)

when i first got my girls Essa had an infection and was on antibiotics for 9 weeks the vet told me she may have some scar tissue in the nasil passage that could cause some sneezing

One of my boys started sneezing this winter and I took him to the vet asap. They said he's healthy and just because it gets dry in the winter. And to bring him back if he gets any discharge from his eyes.

I wish I had a guinea pig rescue near me so I didnt have to go to the pet store to get them

Oh NOOO! My guinea pig I used to have sneed a lot randomly a few times a day, I really hope her new owners notice it and take her to the vet. But there’s nothing I can do now to help her, hopefully she doesn’t get sicker.

Both my piggies have been sneezing ever since we got them. After treating their ringworm (thanks to the petstore) we went in for their sneezing, payed 200 dollars and the vet told us there wasn’t anything wrong and said they could prescribe antibiotics if we wanted but there was no necessity, we took the antibiotics anyways and gave it to them twice a day for 10 days as prescribed but at the end of the 10 days they are still sneezing. I seriously can’t afford to take them again and pay another 200 for the vet to tell me there isn’t anything wrong

i just got my piggies yesterday and they’re sneezing all the time. one is cracklings. emailed the vet this morning

Wow Saskia. You might just have given me the answer to my questions. My guinea pig sometimes breaths very bad. This happens at mornin and night. She sneezes a lot during. When she sneezes, it goes away a little bit, but not all of it, cause it will start again. I don't know what it is. I took her to the vet, but she said that she was breathing normally. She gave her novodix because she did have some snot in her nose. After the vet appointment, I haven't heard it in a long while until very recently. She sneezes almost everyday a few times. I have asked so many people in groups and forums about their experiences but there was no answer. I am planning on going back to the vet to schedule a new appointment because this scares me a lot.

My guinea pig from the pet store had a nasty URI needing two different antibiotics because unresponsive with Baytril, the nebulizer, lots critical care and benebac, and about 4 weeks recovery. She had discharge and would look dead on her side. It was terrifying. My adopted guinea pig I got at estimated 6 months has two sneezing fits no discharge or cloudy eyes, during the day usually with new hay. She has gone through yearly xrays which are perfect, antibiotics, everything 3 different vets. It is determined she has some allergy with timothy and grass hays even blue grass I have shaken it even tried microwave. Tried KMS, Oxbow, and SmallPetSelect. She is fine with fresh grass. She is now close to 2 years old.

Ahhhh.... Baytril!!! The fun memories I have of trying to give my beloved bunny Baytril aka yuck-yuck!!! Watching her face after giving it to her was priceless!😅 How do Guinea pigs deal with the taste of it??? Also Saskia, you may not be a vet but, you sure do have a vets worth of knowledge on guinea pigs!!! Thank you for sharing it! 👌🐹💖

Dusty Blueberry - if you were given the liquid see through version (the injectable version that can be used orally) then yes it is extremely bitter. We put the meds in a 1ml syinge and fill up the rest with liquid Vitamin C to help with the yucky flavor and also satisfies the need for the extra vitamin c. 😍

I mix the yucky medicine with freshly squeezed Mandarin juice. My gang go nuts for freshly squeezed Mandarin juice. I have 1 girl who would play tug of war with the empty syringe and would only give it back if I kissed the top of her head. My gang also try to chew through the syringe to get the Mandarin juice.

@@dustyblueberry3313, you are welcome. My boy Trig who passed away last year, had constant U.R.Is'. He would happily take Metacam/Meloxicam without being picked but the antibiotic? If I didn't mix it with Mandarine Juice, Trig would toss his head around, so I would have to gently hold him like a baby in my arm, against my chest, with his head in my elbow, so I could get him to take his medicine. Living by myself sucks at times.

My bunny was super tame, very affectionate and extremely gentle but, when it came to baytril she would run and hide then, completely protest, then bite the syringe way to hard in defiance, so cute. Thanks for the info about mixing baytril and vitamin c. Until today I never knew this❤️🤗😘

I had this same problem with the little guinea pigs in the pet store. She was sneezing, and eventually we brought her to the vet, and we got medication for them. Unfortunately she died despite treatment, the other one lived. Only had her for two weeks.

Kramer is such a handsome model. When my boy Trig had pneumonia, he was fine with being seperated from his brother. But Roadie was always looking at Trigs' pen. Whenever Trig had an U.R.I (which towards the end of Trigs' life was every 2nd/3rd week), my vet said leave the boys together as Roadie had a good immune system by that time and wasn't picking up the U.R.Is'. Where as my 1st vet s said to seperate the boys.

My guinea pigs babies were sneezing, or just blowing through the nose very harshly. I think it was because my mama hadn't gotten the sack off the nose in time. But they're alright. They're now 3 days old, and are a handful of a four!

I had a guinea pig as a child, and she coughed up blood, so we took her in. The vet asked my mom if i had been sick and i had strep throat. The vet said my piggy got it from me. Have you heard of his? Antibiotics, and she was fine in a few days, thankfully ❤

Yeah before I knew better I got 2 of my girls from pet stores. Hazel my first had freaking fleas even though she only had one cage mate. She was only 4 weeks old. and poor Nutmeg has PTSD because she had to share a small fish tank with 7 other pigs. 1 of which was over a year and half old. So she has insane resource issues and was a bully until Peppermint established herself as top pig. Also certain woods in diy cages can cause the sneezing issue because of chemicals in the dust or also detergents if you use fleece. I had some sneezing issues until I changed to coroplast and cnc with an organic detergent and I haven’t had any issues since.

Thank you so much I adopted a boy my first n I have him 8 months n was told he is blind in one eye n I don't want to loose him I have to find a exotic by me. But I appreciate you so much I've learned alot. The only thing is I only have one cz they told me since he is a special needs I'm so worried 😢😞

My guinea pigs have been sneezing once every few days and I’ve had them for over a year. They seem healthy and the first time I saw this I took them tot he vet but the vet said it was probably just some vents or allergies. Both my Guinea a pigs do this.

My guinea pig has had on and off congestion (it sometimes results in eye crusts and nose crusts+ wheezing and snorting on rare occasions) for her entire life so far (2 years old). She recently had health issues and her cage mate died of unrelated reasons so now that she’s congested again I’ve scheduled a vet appointment. It always happens this time of year worse than the rest of the year but due to all the stress she went through and the fact that she was sick not long ago (ear infection)... not risking it. I’m going to make sure she’s nice and healthy so I can get her new friends.

She has been to the vet multiple times and gets regular check ups btw, I didn’t just ignore the congestion until now the vet was aware of her allergies

My Guinea pigs sneeze all the time,I have had them for ages,they are fit and healthy ,4 of my pigs sneeze one sneezes loads they are not ill at all.usually it's when they are near or eating their hay.

On friday I lost my 3 year old male guinea pig pneumonia, I had been in hospital for a few weeks and my husband and son didn't know sneezing was not normal. I took his sisters to the vet and neither had anything in their chest but one had a gunky nose so she was given a 10 day antibiotic, the vet said she may need another two doses. The girls seem ok at the moment, however they seem a touch stressed without their brother.

Thank you so much! One of my pigs got cold and antibiotics from the vet for 1 month and still sneezing. The vet said he is cured of cold but simply allergic to hay dust and suggests spray a bit water to grass, and no further treatment required. Is that possible some pigs are just allergic but are not sick?

Hi Saskia! My guinea pig has been sneezing from a cold (sudden change of wheather took us off guard) and we took him to the vet and has been on antibiotics for a full week but he keeps sneezing! Not a lot, but maybe once or twice a day. Do you think we should take him again to the vet? It's really costly and risky on quarantine. I'd love your advice. Thanks and love from argentina!

Saskia, what antibiotic would you say has shown the best results in resolving a URI? Right now I’m giving my piggy doxycycline, but he isn’t improving from it. He only has sneezing and sometimes a runny nose.

my guinea pig has been sneezing since i got her four months ago she has gotten two different antibiotics and it didn’t go away i was just at the vet last week and she said it could be allergies from the pine shavings she told me to switch to costal bermuda hay and since still hasn’t stopped sneezing

When you said, allergies are far and few in-between it makes me think of something you hear in medicine: "If you hear horses, think *horses* not *zebras* ."

Question: My boys were born March 6, I got them April 2. One's been sneezing occasionally since I got him. His brother is a lot bigger then him. I took them to vet and was given a probiotic twice a day for little one. I noticed when I was trimming his nails (since the vet didn't do it) that he had a little crusty snot in one nostril. Should I take him back to vet? or maybe a different vet? this one didn't look in his mouth or at his male parts and didn't listen to his lungs.

one of my girls Millie would sneeze a couple times a day every time she went into her hay (at least that's what i saw) and so i thought she was allergic, i ignored the sneezing because i thought it was normal and it was the first pair of pigs that i owned, eventually she passed away at the age of 3, i was devastated, she was a piggie from Pets At Home and was a half breed Abyssinian, straight away she got an abscess, then once that was cleared i thought she was normal but i guess she got a URI which i never knew about too, of course 2-3 years down the line i've learned a lot about guinea pigs and know what to look/listen out for, it sucks knowing that Millie probably died from pneumonia and i had no idea

I have 3 Peruvian guinea pigs

Mine is a couple of months old, and he is coughing? And sneezing I think. No signs of a uri though. I've lost a pig to a uri and I know the symptoms. What else could it be? I use guinea dad liners, and some unscented paper bedding. He gets small animal select pellets and oxbow hay. Nothing different.

Every guinea pig I've ever had has sneezed occassionally but not regularly. I did have one that sneezed everytime I gave her parsley. I do think this was some sort allergy or the leaves tickled her nose. It would happen literally every time. Now interestingly she may have eventually died from heart issues. But she did the sneezing with parsley for quite a few years from baby on up. It was odd. Thanks for video.

So sorry for your loss Alexis. Occasional sneezing like that is not an indication of uri.

What does the noise sound like? One of my guinea pigs have been making a strange noise recently.

So I got a new guinea pig for my heard and he had bit one guinea pigs ear once but as soon as I put him with my guinea pigs they didn't even hump or anything they where automatically cool with each other cuz my two last guinea pigs are verry hyper then when I got an elder an they are cool with each other so that's good (they are all male) (non neutered )

What was the antibiotic Saskia said the vet uses for simple sneezing episodes? I catch one of my piggies sneeze every so often, maybe once every other day, just a quick short puff of air, that's a sneeze right? Anyways I didn't think there was anything wrong but I want them to be as healthy as possible. Should I treat both of them? Is it contagious?

My Guinea pig sneezes but very rarely

Hey Saskia, I treated my guinea pig with antibiotics (per Vet) for sneezing for 14 days however he is still sneezing several times a day. Could there be other reasons for sneezing even after treatment?

Please help! I have owned guinea pigs for the first time, so not much experienced. My guinea pig is sneezing 4-5 times a day ..since a week.. but don't have any other symptoms like watery eyes and runny nose and are very active.. should i be concerned or should i ignore it? Please let me know.. i am really tensed !

I took my guinea to the vet for wheezing, coughing and sneezing they said it was an allergy and that she was all healthy and to change her bedding or food slowly and see if anything changes they offered to give my guinea a steroid to help that allergy for a few months but yea I've put an air purifier next to their cage and the coughing stopped but she still sneezes a little and has whistle like breathing... We are also changing their bedding to loose bedding since they were on fleece Anything else i can change or do to help her? (Sorry this is long i tend to ramble.)
