What To Do If You Feel Stupid

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I talk about one of the biggest problems I saw as a teacher. So many students struggle with feeling stupid, and this problem is not limited to the classroom.
If you find yourself feeling stupid, I really hope that over time you'll be able to change your perspective and find more hope, and I outline how I think you can get started on that in this video.
Feeling stupid is at the end of almost every behavior that stops us from learning. Once you widdle down all our reasons and excuses to their core, this is the thing stopping us from learning better, learning more, and enjoying ourselves while doing it.
And people tend to think that feeling stupid is kind of its own thing, something we’re thinking about ourselves that just happens alongside us as we experience our successes and failures.
But feeling stupid is never isolated from the rest of our experience. If you’re feeling stupid, that is louder than anything else that’s going on, and in many cases it tugs on you and tugs on you until it becomes the dominant thing we’re reacting to.
Because feeling stupid is not just a frivolous side hustle our brain has when we’re going through things, feeling stupid has an agenda. And that agenda is to get you to quit. Because thinking you’re stupid always comes with this secondary logic, which is: if we’re stupid, and that’s truly the explanation for why we’re not understanding whatever it is, then we -can’t improve, we -won’t improve, it -wouldn’t matter if we kept trying anyway because we’re inherently stupid.

What if you have cognitive difficulties or issues with concentration, or even just suffer from fatigue? For example, I would really love to dedicate myself to a whole range of topics and skills that I could invest time and energy into learning. But the fact that something requires so much time investment & practice (as you say in the video), and this type of investment will require you to spend your energy reserves on it, makes it really difficult for me. I have limited energy and I struggle with ADHD like symptoms (unfortunately never got a diagnosis even though it's obvious I struggle with daily functioning). Even if I really _want_ to learn something, I often don't have the energy to do it. It's truly a big problem in my life and one that causes me a lot of grief and shame. Espescially when we as a culture put so much emphasis in what we DO and the skills we "should" know and also into being good at at least one thing. And if you're not good at anything, you are often looked down upon by others. I guess the only solution for people who struggle like I do, is to get professional help (although many do not recieve the help they need even when they seek it). Either way, it still sucks so much. This aspect of struggling cognitively or having a body that's not completely functioning, is something I think we should shed waaay more light on when we talk about this. Because people like me aren't lazy, we are hindered by something that's mostly out of our control, that may look like it is in our control to others... We shouldn't value humans only by how much they can do, or what skills they are specalized in, or whether or not they are knowledgable. It puts so much pressure on us all. Unfortunately, I know this is a complicated topic and is tied into how we form social groups, our survival in said groups and how society is currently systematized, and it does not have an easy solution. Generally, I just wish we could all be kinder and more generous with each other, including those who aren't specialized in a skill or very knowledgable.

I love your comment so much! Yes you make all valid points and I totally agree. Each persons worth on this earth should not be tied to skills or abilities, and we as a society are at the point where we have enough technology to take care of everyone. Hopefully as time goes on we start improving in this area. As for your question about what to do as you’re struggling with adhd symptoms/ fatigue, I’ll throw out some random ideas and feel free to use whatever sounds right to you! I guess the thought that hit me the most was some form of acceptance, which I mean in the mindfulness/meditation way. If you can work on getting to a place of acceptance with your limitations, knowing that you’re at an inherent disadvantage, and genuinely not shaming yourself for being this way, any learning you do is going to be way easier because you won’t be stuck in the mud of feeling bad/behind while doing it. I know my friends with adhd have benefited from DBT, so you may want to look up techniques from that type of therapy. My next thought is that learning to prioritize will be really important for you. If it takes you a little longer to gain skills, you want to make sure you’re learning the things that help you the most/ you’re most interested in. I’ve seen many students with all types of cognitive difficulties succeed against the odds, what separated all of them was their attitude of never giving up. If you can harness that, you can gain the skills you want! Good luck!!

Hey I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone and I wholeheartedly agree with you. I also second the idea of kindness and acceptance being the important first step, and pretty much just dedication in whatever capacity it is that you _can_ contribute to your own learning. As a burnt out ""gifted"" kid with chrnoic illness, I am on the same journey and I totally believe that we can attain any reasonable goal we set our minds to with time! You got this.

I’m in training right now at work learning all these new procedures and steps and I have adhd so it’s sometimes hard to focus. I ask questions a lot and I just ended my Friday asking a questions and my trainer got a little upset at me and my peers laughed at me bc I guess I asked a stupid question over video call…I’ve been feeling stupid and not good enough for this job lately as it is. and I just shut my computer off and shut down and started crying for half an hour.

It is far better to have asked the question than to not to have, you didn't miss out on an opportunity to better yourself and that is commendable regardless of whatever reaction you got. You just keep on doing you! Simply not knowing something is not a blanket statement about a person's capabilities, and what matters above all else is your willingness to learn and improve! I wish you success in your career endeavours.

I always viewed teaching as a staircase, and the more steps you break something up into the easier it is for people to climb the stairs. When a student didn't understand something I would try repeating myself with different words, and if that didn't work I would break whatever step I was explaining down into more steps. Sometimes you have to do this so much the staircase resembles more of a ramp, but I never found a student that couldn't walk up it eventually. Of course the big thing you need from students who are in this situation is their investment and ability to keep trying even when everyone around them has gotten it. The students in this situation who were successful came to almost every one of my office hours and they would pass, but most students having this much difficulty didn't have the emotional and time management skills to dedicate themselves to this process.
