If you can't do Maths, are you stupid?
Is being good at Maths the only way a child can be called "smart"?

I'd like to tell you about how I came to absolutely hate Mathematics. It all started way back in the 90s when I was in Grade 3 (Standard 1). I had a traumatic experience (or rather, several traumatic experiences) during Maths class that led me to believe I was stupid. And I judged myself.

I've always wondered about this subject. I'm a highschool student who isn't good at math and science and I hate doing it but I'm good at artistic things and things I make with my hands. Nobody says "oh your good at painting and woodwork, you must be smart". But everyone praises the kids who are good a math and sciences as smart. Even my friends compete at who's smarter by measuring math scores. Because of this I always equated intelligence to being good at math and science, therefore I'm a dumb person.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us Carl; we really appreciate your feedback. I just want to say that you are definitely not a dumb person and you should be proud of the fact that you are more artistly inclined. Just remember that you do not need to be "smart" or "intelligent" in order to be successful in life. Of course we agree that doing well in school is important, but you shouldn't feel bad if you are struggling with subjects like Maths and Science. Most of us here at WorksheetCloud never did well in Mathematics, but we made it through and we are happy with what we were able to achieve. At the end of the day we encourage you to just do the best that you can and remember that even though your friends might be better at certain subjects in school, they might not be as creative as you are artistically. 😁

This just boost my confidence up many levels. I get really stressed when I can't learn things quickly. I feel really dumb. Especially when I have to use Math.

@ROIDO That's really awesome to hear! I'm glad that we were able to boost up your confidence. 🥳 I personally feel the struggle when I can't learn things as quickly as others do. It's always encouraging to know that it doesn't make us dumb or any less smarter than the people around us; it just means that we do things differently. 😁
If you suck at art, you can just say that you don't have talent and that's fine. Not liking literature is also fine. But the moment it's MATH that you're not good at, you will be called stupid or lazy or both. If I hear that tired old line about how math is the ONLY subject where you have to "really think" and "everything else is memorization" one more time... There are brilliant novelists, artists, designers and musicians that suck at math. So that's all memorization, right? Then why don't the math genuines give it a try? There are many types of intelligence, but our society only values one.

Hey McHobbit2951 (great username by the way!) 😎 You've hit the nail on the head! 🔨 It's unfortunate that when the word "smart" is heard, people tend to think that the person being mentioned is good with numbers. There are a ton of different ways that people can be "smart", a lot of which you listed in your comment. My advice: Keep focusing on the things you are passionate about, pursue them relentlessly, and success will follow. Ask any artist, musician, author, designer, and they'll say the same thing. Show the world how SMART you are! 💜
This made me feel a lot better. Thanks. I really want to graduate with a Forensic Science degree, but I must take math courses all the way up to Calculus II. I'm not the best at math.

If the teachers are not on board with the change, then you are fighting a loosing battle. I've had it for many years with 3 of my children!! Unfortunately in our case the teachers do not realize the power of their words and destroys all the progress!!

Thanks for your comment Christelle! You are right. The power of words can have a huge impact on the learning of our children. People, including teachers, have to be mindful when engaging with young minds. 🧠
I was lousy at maths at school and yet manage to solve maths mindbender. I can solve cryptic crosswords, but have next to no formal training in logic or any English qualifications. No GCSE's or A-levels but managed a ii/I BSc Hons degree in Applied Geology. Not too bad for a low level embecile. You see I can get away with being stupid to a certain degree. I am only too aware of what having a very low I.Q is like. Mine came back as I.Q 19. Lols

Thanks for your comment Mark, and great job on solving those puzzles and Maths sums! Just as we highlighted in the video, getting low grades at school for Maths, or even for IQ tests, is by no means an accurate reflection of whether you or anyone else is considered "smart" or not. We are all smart at different things. Someone might be Math smart. Another might be art smart. Another, car racing smart. Who's to say which of those is more impressive? Just keep pursuing the things you enjoy in life and make your own success out of them.
I can feel that you are gonna be one of the biggest KZreadrs ever.

Oh yeah not one of us got past grade nine failing four times in grade school and I just walked out class. Most teachers pick on the ones they think are dumb on the first day at a new school Mr. Pilgrim put me in the back and put a dunces hat on me other teachers forward there opinions so it just never stopped. God's truth

Hey Gary, thanks for your comment. I am so sorry to hear about the lack of motivation and encouragement you suffered at Grade School. School is a place where you should feel safe and educated. I feel terrible that you had to experience the opposite of that. I hope that you have found encouragement and determination elsewhere and you are out there doing your best. 🙏
All Is relative.

But what if your 2 years behind in grade 4 and still can't do 67 ÷ 45😅
@WorksheetCloudApp

That certainly does not mean that you are stupid. Even adults can struggle with an equation like 67 ÷ 45. 😅Just keep trying and with time it will become easier to work out those kinds of division problems. 🏆
