What The Top Of Mount Stupid Looks Like - FTX's Caroline Ellison

What’s the psychology of why Caroline Ellison is at the peak of Mount Stupid?
Caroline Ellison is the ex-girlfriend of Sam Bankman-Fried, was the former CEO of the now bankrupt Alameda Research, which was the trading arm of the also now bankrupt FTX. Caroline is now apparently on the run with possibly a few hundred mil of customer money.
There are many clips going around of her speaking about crypto-trading on podcasts where it sounds like she’s on Mount Stupid, but what’s going on with her.
In psychology, there’s something call the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Naturally, when someone begins learning something new their confidence begins to rise extremely high because they don’t fully understand the complexity of the topic, which leads them to the peak of what’s actually called Mount Stupid. Have you ever taught a friend or new employee your field and all of a sudden they get very arrogant, acting like it’s easy, behaving like they know it just as well as you do, which may cause you to feel insulted? This happens because they’re starting to climb Mount Stupid overestimating their competence and don’t even realize they are on Mount Stupid, while you’ve been through the process with real experience and expertise, and you know the complexity of the topic and all that’s involved. There’s a saying I like that’s very fitting here, “The more you know - the more you know you don’t know.” An easy way to spot a novice within a field is when they claim to know everything within that field. A true expert knows the vastness of the field and how little they know within the field.
Ever hear someone say, “I know just enough to be dangerous?” That’s typically said by someone who is starting to come down from the peak of Mount Stupid and begins to acknowledge how little they know on the topic. However, there are some people who work in a field who stay at the top of Mount Stupid by subconsciously shielding themselves from learning anything further because learning can be intimidating, humbling, and causes insecurity since it reveals how little they know. Therefore, they consistently try to avoid this necessary valley of despair by perpetually living in their manufactured bubble atop Mount Stupid. Therefore, they maintain the belief that they know everything about a field but actually know very little. Since they never experienced the valley of despair, they don’t get to reach this incline slope of enlightenment to gain real competence and expertise, which builds authentic confidence.
Going back to Caroline, she was a math major and worked as a researcher at a trading firm out of college for a year and a half but lacked real world trading experience and the application of mathematical concepts with finance, business, and trading. This caused her to do and say stupid things like this.
The crypto market was surging through most of the time she was involved with Alameda Research and FTX. It’s easy to be successful trading in a bull market when everything is going up, but a lot more difficult to be successful when the market begins to transition from bull to bear where everything begins to go down. Her initial successful trading in the easy bull market built false confidence reinforcing her false belief that she’s a great trader, but in reality, a bull market makes everyone feel like a great trader. Additionally, she apparently had little direction from truly experienced traders to guide, ground, and humble her, which resulted in her sitting in a bubble atop Mount Stupid for a very long-time saying and doing stupid things, causing her to poorly gambling away billions of dollars in customer funds unbeknownst to the customers.
Or maybe it was all just a Ponzi scheme from the beginning where the plan was to steal billions from customers, run away, and hang out on a yacht in the middle of the Mediterranean.

She got a lot of big names on board with her, failed to deliver, lied about it, and got sentenced to 11 years in prison last week. The mainstream media is pretty stupid on a lot of things. Especially crypto. Crypto has always been this ethereal, impossible to define thing. How do you assign value to something that can't be explained in any reasonable way. Securities have value because the companies they represent have assets that are undisputable. Fiat currencies derive value because of the power of government and that government's economy backing it. Crypto has nothing to back it besides hype which is like sand. You keep grasping for it but it will always slip through your fingers.

I called her on it right there and she stomped into the bosses office while the rest of us went back to work. She convinced my boss that she knew best and would only continue working there if she never had to speak to me again. The boss agreed. I only heard about things in private after that but two employees (we only have 10) threatened to quit and others were very demoralized. She caused so much trouble and cost my boss so much money that she was let go within 4 months but the boss had to pay her full fee. We got absolutely nothing from her, her ideas, or her work and the boss had to go back out and hire someone new to start over. But she apologized to me and ran future hires by all employees because she didn’t trust her judgement after that.

They stay there, permanently, in all things- it’s just their state of being, to grossly overstate and overestimate their competency and intelligence, as the designation of genius is reserved for only the top It’s like the OK Cupid users - a whopping 46% of men and 30% of women indicated that they believe they are GENIUSES- something that is obviously statistically impossible. And I personally know one of them who repeatedly took Mensa tests and failed every time (9 times, last I checked), but kept rescheduling and retaking them under the assumption that every failure thus far had merely been a fluke and/or that they were being scored wrong every time. Hint: they weren’t. (!!) In all these cases, not only are these folks NOT geniuses, they’re actually so incompetent that they don’t even realize their own ineptitudes. These people ascended up Mt Stupid early in life and permanently reside there, and they are poster children for the Dunning-Kruger Effect. ❤

Sam Bankman-Fried was never really successful in the first place. To me, anyone in their 30s living with 9 roommates, sleeping only on couches, and playing videogames while making deals on the phone is essentially a failure regardless of how much money he makes - failure being defined as falling short of one's potential on the inside of oneself, not on the outside. It shows how wrong it is to think in terms of how much money anyone's worth. The only thing that ever really matters is what we're worth as human beings, not as income earners. Sam Bankman-Fried's true worth all along was revealed in the final outcome...bankruptcy.

@@ALT-vz3jnWhen I wrote "It's our worth as human beings that matters" I meant it's our active affirmation of that worth - making living choices that reflect that worth - that matters. Living choices can connect us to our worth as human beings or disconnect us from it. I agree our essential worth is inherent, but if we disconnect from that essential worth by living empty, immoral lives, then that removes our deeper human worth from the equation. Put more simply, it's not enough to be a good person deep-down - your choices of behavior and direction in life have to back it up, or you're just an employee on the books waiting at home every day for a paycheck that's never going to arrive because you're not doing the work. As an extreme example, Charles Manson had worth as a human being, but we never *got* a human being there, nor did he. We all (including him) just got a psychopath with a Jesus complex.

Because she's clearly still stupid to run from the law (just like any idiot fleeing in a stolen car with ten cop cars behind them), while the people who invested in her crypto are now all too wise. As a successful business author once wrote (in a book titled Swimming With the Sharks): "When a fool with money meets a con artist with experience, the con artist ends up with the money and the (former) fool ends up with the experience." The way I always heard it was a variation of what was said in the video - "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing". Referring to those who know just enough to erroneously think they are experts giving them a false confidence with which they venture out and make arrogantly stupid decisions. And interestingly the reverse effect is true too, true experts often falsely sell themselves short making them susceptible to anyone wanting to play on their self doubt. So you can easily end up with those on mount stupid in charge, as they toot their own horn the loudest. And if you have such self doubt and hear about this effect, you might boost your ego and falsely convince yourself that your self doubt is undeserved and that you are in fact in the latter camp, a true expert, and instantly find yourself on mount stupid because in fact in your case your self doubt was actually well deserved. Know thyself. Not an easy thing to do.

Also it reminds me of a stat I heard once. I was in a motorcycle safety class. The teacher said that according to the statistics of that time, in my state, that the people most likely to die on a motorcycle were the ones who had been riding about a year. Which at first is counter-intuitive. You would think the newbies would be the most likely to get themselves killed. But when considering 'mount stupid' it makes perfect sense. The newbies know they are novices so are extra careful to compensate. The true veterans have a lot of experience and learned some hard lessons and know that some issues of safety just can't be compromised regardless of skill. In between are the people who have been riding just long enough to think they know it all now and can relax don't have to be careful anymore. No idea if these stats are still true today, this was a long time ago, but it seems to fit the bill of the topic at hand.

@@SmegInThePants I like your thinking. I thought in terms of motorcycle safety also right from the beginning of the video. Overconfidence is a ruthless coach. But he's ultimately on your side - that's the key to keep learning in spite of all our mistakes. And when DVS mentioned "knowing just enough to be dangerous" I thought of JFK Jr as a pilot, and his many other failed roles in life. He never became the real-deal - he was stuck in Camelot along with his father. As for deciding whether oneself is a true expert or not, just thinking in those terms is a trap. As Kipling put it in his famous poem 'IF,' the right attitude is to treat victory and defeat as equal imposters. That means simply being on a journey of discovery. I've found the striving for status of expert, veteran, wise person or even mature adult is best discarded. I'm not a big fan of religions, but the one thing I admire and envy about true devotees is their humbling themselves to a God instead of trying to become one themself (which is the main reason rich evangelists are so grotesquely phony).

I agree with Craig. It’s a very common thing to go through once you start learning something well. I remember having this realization in middle school after learning some new Greek mythology stuff. I remember being in awe and realizing that the more I learned, the more there was to learn. Almost everyone with any sort of expertise has the thought go through their mind at some point and a lot will say it. It would be incredibly hard to pinpoint the first person recorded to have said it or it’s variations over the centuries and impossible to pinpoint the actual first. Also, you must have gotten really good at poker. I can’t even memorize which cards I’m supposed to be happy about having. Once I do, maybe I’ll think poker is easy for a while until I get over mount stupid. 😂

Well here in America things are finally at Mount Stupid. It really is up to one’s own self to keep fit by exercising and eat right all the while working so one doesn’t become a burden on society. That was my generation but today’s kids there is such a ‘Will and Skill Shortage’ that fentanyl deaths annually exceed 100,000 dead and near double from the Vietnam war of 58,000 between 1965 to 1974 or near 10 years. The #1 issue in our 2022 midterm elections was keeping abortion legal and safe. Women made sure where I live in PA that the new anti-abortion Dem PA Governor, who is clearly mentally unfit after a severe stroke, won and over a Republican doctor MD. Yep, up is down and down is up here in America where we collectively have made it up to the top of Mount Stupid. There is nothing left to do but legalize drug use so when America and future Americans go down the rabbit hole, they can legally self medicate and soften the mirage our government can fix any social problem while destroying American industry at every turn. Our US governments war on fossil fuels use is about as insane as propping up the notion that to fix humanities # 1 existential problem we need to fix the weather by ending all fossil fuels use! The whole reason our population worldwide went from 2 billion to 8 billion in 150 years is due to fossil fuels use. Yet Global balmy due to plant food CO2 is somehow going to end the world. Our lead neurotic VP Al Gore Jr in 1997 predicted the North Pole would be ice free by 2014 if CO2 increases were not stopped. His movie “Inconvenient Truth” about global nonsensical warming is now mandatory viewing in our public grade schools, middle schools and high schools. No wonder home schooling in America has become so popular. The cult of global balmy or warming hysteria is pushed even more than CRT in our public schools. But the planet per NASA satellite imagery is 20 to 30% greener, crop yields double or triple that of the 1960’s. The 1930’s decade still had double or triple worldwide temperatures over 90F or 100F compared to the last 3 so called hottest decades 1990’s to 2020’s. If you believe in this global balmy nonsense than I have some FTX coin to sell you. Are you in? There are so many neurotic Americans today that believe this global warming hysteria now, that the only solution is to have them self medicate as they all go down the Alice and Wonderland rabbit hole.
