What Should You Do If You Step On A Nail?
As we are walking around the house or walking outside, there sometimes is a situation where something sharp penetrates our foot. This could be a splinter, a carpet tack, a nail that goes through the shoe, anything that #punctures the #bottom of the #foot. There is always a question of how serious is it and what do we do for it?
It is very serious, because the bones of the foot is not too distant from the skin. If a nail, for instance, punctures the shoe and goes into the foot, it could impact the bones in the foot as well. While a skin infection is bad enough, a bone infection is not something that we want to have to deal with.
If you find that you have stepped on something that has punctured your foot, you should take the following measures. First of all, call our office . We will see you right away and I'll be able to assess the wound, irrigate it and determine what is necessary. In almost every case, a course of antibiotics will be necessary. Sometimes, depending on what the material is that punctures, you may need a tetanus shot. How will you know if you need a tetanus shot? Typically, if you haven't received a #tetanus shot in the past ten years, you will need one for a puncture wound.
Most importantly, we want to make sure that the puncture did not reach the bone. We will take an x-ray, look at the bones to make sure they are healthy and without injury, and use antibiotics to manage any possible infection.
These circumstances are magnified if you are diabetic . If someone is diabetic, it is a medical emergency for you to come and see us. Infections can set in quickly and we need to get on top of it. How can i cure the pain from just a little puncture ? The nail just touched and penetrated the skin and a little part of meat of my foot but is verry painful.
Here's what I did after stepping on a rusty nail. Around half an inch got in and hurt real bad. Left dark debris inside the puncture. 1. Let it bleed out for a while 2. Washed my entire feet with soap and a brush. 3. Wiped the wound with rubbing alcohol (Hexisol). 4. Opened the entry of the wound with a toothpick by removing a little skin, made a round hole. 5. Used an Oral Irrigator/Dental Water Floss and filled it up with warm water+hexisol. Injected the water with enough pressure into the wound. 6. Squeezed the area around the wound to get the water out. Repeating 5+6 three times. 7. Wiped it dry and put on cotton with hexisol and put bandaid on it. 8. Removed the bandaid after 20 minutes and squeezed some more water/blood out. It hurts like hell. Hopefully all the rust is out. I got a tetanus shot and will get antibiotics later.

Hey I have a question, I had a small cut and it wasn’t deep but the nail was kinda rusty and I haven’t gotten the tetanus vaccine in the last 10 years but I already cleaned the area so is it fine for me to leave it be

If it’s not a deep puncture, cleaning with soap and water and dressing with an antibiotic ointment should be fine.

I stepped on a nail it went it but I don’t think that deep but it had like a small pinch on my foot but it’s was small swole just around that little small hole an it was hurt for like 6 days an my 3 toes was kinda like wanted to lock like it was hurt bad an it’s probably been like 2 in half weeks ago an I still never went checked it an it don’t hurt nobody but I still kinda feel like the little bit in my 3 toes an like when I walk but it’s not swell anymore but do u think I still should get it checked because I’ve heared ya can lose foot that way I’m just trying see if I’m still going to be safe an good if I go try to check my foot this week by the doctor I knows it been like 3 weeks so idk if I’m too late

I stepped on a nail years ago, it was in a 2x4 we had in a fire. The nail was hot so my foot didn't bleed. I can still feel the scar on my foot if I do a lot of walking.

Me I got cut buy something rusty i think it was 2years ago but i don't feel anything and
I stepped on a nail 3yrs ago and it still hasn't healed yet??? It doesn't bleed but its like a callous on the bottom of my foot the hurts when i touch it or im on it for long periods of time

Hello! If in a situation that I have stepped on a nail and there is no water or any antibiotic. And the only option I have is to put pressure. Do I have to put pressure exactly on the wound or around it?

Put pressure on it. Flush it as soon as you can. But get antibiotics as soon as possible and a tetanus shot if yours isn’t up to date.

If you haven't already, make sure you get it checked. You need to be on antibiotics and, if you aren't up to date, you may need a tetanus shot. Don't let this go without getting the care you need to ensure it doesn't become worse.

@@DrAndrewSchneider I soaked my foot in salt the first day then put a triple antibiotic ointment and red light therapy, it never got infected and feels a lot better now and I can walk well again

@@DrAndrewSchneider stepped on a rusty, went to ER, they had me soak my foot in some water with what they said was a mixture of water and some other medicine. I got a tetanus shot because I haven’t had one in more than 10 years. They then put bacitracin on it and a band aid. They did not give me any antibiotics. They did not really scrub it or anything. Now I am home and it just hurts to walk on it, like if I put too much weight on it it hurts. They told me to return if things get worse. What do you think? Will I be okay?

I stepped on a rusty nail doing yard work and I went to the doctor and they did an X-ray and said everything was ok and gave me the tecna shot so will I still have to take antibiotics

Absolutely. At the very least you may need a tetanus shot or booster. Depending on the circumstances, you may also need antibiotics. Definitely get it checked out!

If you’re not still taking antibiotics then yes. They don’t stay in your system long enough. Also, don’t forget about the tetanus shot
What if u stepped on a nail and it just hitted ur skin and u started to bleed super litle Should u still go to the hospital?

If it was just a scratch, you can wash the area with alcohol or peroxide and dress it with triple antibiotic ointment. If it penetrated with any depth, it’s best to get it checked.

I had a nail go into the right side of my foot it was bleeding pretty bad and it has a knot in it and I can’t walk that well after a day still I had a tetanus shot less than 10 years ago I believe but what else should I do

Even though you’ve had a tetanus shot within 10 years, you may need antibiotics. Visit a podiatrist or urgent care.

I’m not a hand guy, but it could have irritated a nerve. Be sure to get it checked by a hand specialist.
I stepped on a nail and nothing happened I just waited to heal

If the nail just caused a small scratch, then it will be okay. If it went any deeper than that, you should find out if you need a tetanus shot. No offense to grandma!
