Hydration: Sports Drinks vs Water - Texas Children's Sports Medicine

What keeps athletes more hydrated - sports drinks or water?
Texas Children's Chief of Sports and Adolescent Medicine Dr. Albert Hergenroeder explains that if you are participating in an athletic activity for less than an hour, water is ok. If you get into a prolonged sporting activity of an hour or more, then drinking a sports drink like Gatorade or Powerade is encouraged.

    I use propel no sugar and all natural flavors and they are super nice for long runs or wrestling tournaments in my experience they work great and they are healthy

    If I am going to have a sports drink, I choose Golazo because its natural, no artificial colors or flavors and its made with coconut water. But water is my number one drink as it gives me the best boost in energy. It tastes great too!

    Sweat = dehydration plus loss of electrolytes Water during work out = dilution of cell which in turn loss of electrolyte (that’s the short form anyway) Basically Gatorade is better because of the replenishment of electrolytes. Also better for muscle repair. If you’re over weight then find something with less sugar cause you probably aren’t going to burn off the 35grams of sugar per drink. But if you’re active for your workouts...Gatorade beats water

    Well, I have Varsity Basketball practice that are almost 2 continuous hours. Cold water is great for flushing out the system, but sport drinks like Gatorade gives an extra pump of energy. The sports drink are easily burned through continuous intense practice.

    Nice video. I wish it would have been explained why? I mean water is encouraged which is good. But for example if I am dehydrated or something like that would Gatorade be a better choice for me than water?

    Joshua James There is nothing better than water for hydration. For electrolyte replacement, go with Gatorade. This doctor hits the nail on the head when it comes to which drink you should drink, it’s all circumstantial.

    Mi Vida en Guatemala water doesn't replace the electrolytes you lose during intense activity. You can drink water after a football game and still be dehydrated. Gatorade helps you recover faster and replenish essential nutrients.

    Two bananas has the same amount of sugar as a Gatorade. One 12 ounce bottle is only 7% of your daily sodium intake. Myths based on fear, build incorrect assumptions.

    I prefer drinking my kangen ionized alkaline water but If it's not with me, I would add some sea salt to water and drink that instead. Sea salt has 84 essential minerals in it. (Reverse osmosis has zero.) I had to drink Gatorade for a colonoscopy prep, and because of its HIGH SUGAR content, I felt so ill! Never desire to do that again.

    No true..."Cold/Ice water" ... is definitely not good for any sports activities. Not only that the body needs to spend energy to warm it up, but it also hinders the natural process of absorbing nutrients. For any sports activities no matter how long they are you need to find some good quality electrolyte tablets or powder and dilute it with room temperature water. It wont taste like the good ol' ice water but you will perform and feel better

    Definitely better for you than water. I drink Powerade zero at work. When I drink water I just feel more tired. Water doesn't give you what you need. Just empty fluid with no benefit. It's only good for cleaning and fasting

    lol at the morons in the comments hating on sports drinks, he even summed it up pretty nicely when you're working out especially in the heat your body needs to replenish that loss and sugar is beneficial which is why you always crave sugar when you're dying in the heat... it's not a guilty craving it's a necessary craving if you don't feel the need for a gatorade then stick with water because no sugar... however for the real athletes out there, your body does need that sugar to recover drink that gatorade and feel good about it warrior

    Read up on power aid or Gatorade … not good for you . Better is a glass of water with a pinch of salt and sugar and eat a banana
