What Should You Do if You Hit a Parked Car

00:00. Introduction. You backed up too quickly and slammed into the car parked behind you or you driving along a narrow road and you hit the mirror of a parked vehicle? You don't see any witness. What should you do?
0:40. According to a recent survey, almost one-in-five people in the UK said they would just drive away and not leave their details if they dented another car when parking. In fact, diving away without leaving your details, has the potential to become one of your worst nightmares.
1:05. The penalty for hit and run is between 5 to 10 points on your licence and up to 6 months in prison. Can that be possible worth the risk?
1:31. Under the Road Traffic Act (1988): "If you’re driving a motorised vehicle and are involved in an accident which causes damage or injury to another person, vehicle, property or animal, you must stop and give your vehicle registration along with your name and address to 'anyone with reasonable grounds to be asking for those details."
If you hit a parked vehicle, the first and most important thing to do is stop. Relax and then access the situation. Let’s assume that there is no one about it. Take pictures on your mobile of any damage. If there is no damage the more reason to take pictures.
2:15. I personally would not recommend leaving a note. Many years ago, when I first became a driving instructor, we hit a parked car and caused damage to a side mirror. I left a note and the owner billed me for over £400. So what would I do now?
3:50. Well, the law says that if you cause damage to property and can not make contact with the owner, you must notify the police within 24 hours. That is what I would do, Simply go online and notify the police. Here is the interesting part. The police would not tell the owner of the car that you hit. That is unless the owner reported it to the police.

I had a bump not too long. I was seeing a family member, parked up, put handbrake on and left it in neutral gear while up hill (Rookie error!). When I got out and started walking to my family member's house. I saw my car slowly moving in reflection. I tried to get a hold of it but due to it being icey and already recovering from an injured knee. I wasn't able to jump in the car in time. Sadly it got a parked car and dented a bumper. A resident heard the noise, told me where the owner lift. Knocked on their door, no response. Left a note and posted through their letter box. Got a call same day later from a lady and I offered to pay for damage considering it was my fault. She agreed and her car has now been repaired. £200 down. Lesson learnt. Never park up hill in ice conditions.

I just hit my uncles friends car leaving his house, backed up into the spot i usually turned around in and boom. There is very minimal damage because it was a very slow collision, and it only happened because when i arrived her car was not there and in another spot, so i only took a glance and went for it assuming there was no car there. I hate myself for doing so and i don't even care about what happened to my wheels, but i thought it was best to leave and come back tomorrow to let her know. Im glad it was someone i knew and not a random person. Im always more careful around public areas when driving but i was caught off guard in this case.

You can supervise someone from your household or support bubble during an essential journey during the temporary lockdown. Driving lessons and motorcycle training can take place in areas in protection level 3.

Wrong advice. Leave your detail's with a note. You have have damaged someone's car. Be decent. Take responseability for your action's. granted this guy was stung with £400 but he damaged someone's car end off. You're praying on people's miss-information on what to do when someone hits there car to get away of it. While it is clever I still believe it to be wrong.

Hit the car behind her. The car was very long anyway, but we don’t have this anymore.

Hi Dave. Thanks for commenting. Be careful. Someone may see you from their window or you may be caught on camera.

Uncle. Do not make people scared .. you need to have evidence as well.. if I say you hit my car I need to have video clearly showing number plate of my car.. otherwise its your word against mine. Do not be too nice. Otherwise people will chop you.
