What to do if you have an Accident | DTC Driving Test UK | Driving Lessons

No one expects to be involved in a car accident but unfortunately, accidents happen and it’s important to know what to do if you’re caught up in one. The heart rate increases and things become a blur. The first and most important thing to do is to Stop the car as soon as possible
No matter how small the accident is, you must stop. In fact, failing to do so is an offence under the Road Traffic Act. You can be sentenced to prison.
You should make sure your car’s engine is switched off and then turn your hazard lights on. Check for injuries to yourself and passengers.
Take photos or video of the scene including the number plates. Try to remain as calm as possible - its normal to be shaken after an accident. Don’t lose your temper but at the same time, even if you know it your fault, NEVER EVER, admit liability, it could invalidate your insurance.
The UK law say that you must give your name and contact details to any involved involved in the accident. However, try and collect as much information as possible including witness details. If you suspect the the other party is under the influence of drink, drugs or you believe they’ve deliberately caused the accident, you should call the Police. You should also call the Police if there are any injuries or the road is blocked.
In minor incidents, you may choose to repair the car privately. Sometimes, there may be hidden damage which you can not see. If you decide to handle things privately, you should still inform your insurance company. Mark the application as “for information only”. Sometimes, people will make a claim against months after the incident.
A few years ago, I had an accident which involved no damage at all. We agreed that to call it quits and not to claim on the insurance. However, 6 months later the passenger in the other car claimed for personal injury.

One of the most frustrating thing about accidents is even if you are not at fault the accident goes on your record for 5 year, which then gives insurance companies a reason to increase your premium for the next 5 years, not really fair.

@@dtc_uk Often most accidents can be avoided, it takes two not so good drivers to have an accident. But if one driver is a good driver by anticipating and planning they can avoid a collision with the not so good driver. But things like the car behind you driving into you when you are stationary, or a lorry steering into you when you are stopped in a traffic que can't be avoided :-(

I was involved in an accident some years ago with an uppity elderly man driver, over 80, and just sat in the car and refused to speak to me or inspect the damage until the police came.

Hello. Happy new year. Sorry for late reply. If you have the number plate, you can can their address if you make a claim from the insurance company. The police can also get their address but only if damage or injury as occurred By insurance details, I mean just the name of the insurance company is enough. You are not required to carry any details with you
