HGV | LGV Licence changes - Car to Class 1 training? 🚛

Фильм және анимация

Can I go from a car licence to a Class 1 Lorry? Well, yes, now you can! But will the HGV driver test changes help fix the LGV driver shortage?... www.nationaldrivingcentre.co.uk/
The government have now confirmed that as of November 15th 2021 you will no longer have to pass a DVSA driving test on a Category C | Class 2 lorry before progressing up to the Class 1 | C+E course. HUGE LEGISLATION CHANGE! Last time something like this changed in the law was 1997 when it did the exact reverse. The Category C | Class 2 was put in to create the staged approach, that step up, to the much larger Class 1 | C+E.
Why? Because the accident rate was so high! Now the roads are busier and vehicles are larger, will the same happen again? Time will tell…
‘Do I still have to reverse on my LGV driving test? I’ve heard the reversing manoeuvre has been removed?’
Yes the reverse is still part of the lorry test! But that has changed too…
The Government / DVSA from November 15th 2021 is allowing training providers to conduct the reversing manoeuvre and the trailer drop (couple / uncouple) instead of them having to do it as part of the HGV driving test. The DVSA will now only be present and conduct the out on road drive.
These seismic changes in the LGV industry will massively affect your HGV training and provide you with a decision to make what lorry driving course you take and why. This video weighs up all options and what National Driving Centre are doing to keep training future lorry drivers to a high and safe standard. Enjoy!

    You can really tell from your videos that you guys enjoy what you do, and that's exactly what you want when you're training. I had similar instructors for my motorcycle training & full test about 5 years ago, and it made it one of the most enjoyable weeks I've had - I look back and smile. I'll definitely be contacting you guys in the next couple of months when my current contract expires, I fancy a change and a career of listening to music while not running shit over sounds like fun times - I've got a lot of long wheelbase 3.5t van experience so hopefully it'll come in useful for the C1.

    Everyone should remember, the reluctance of a lot of these driving centres to do Car to Class 1 is due to the drastically reduced revenue they get per trainee. While I have no doubt the experience of a Class 2 will help you be a better driver on the Class 1, I know plenty of people who have passed first time after a 2 week course straight from a car, myself included. If you're a safe and cautious driver and do everything properly there's no reason you can't go straight on the artic

  • @NationalDrivingCentre

    Of course with a professional training school yes it is possible to pass this course from B to C+E, but as we say in the video this does not guarantee you any work as a lot of companies will not take anyone on with such limited experience. In the same way if you pass your private pilots license you will not then go and work straight away flying 747's for BA, or having just completed your day skipper course going onto cruise an 180,000 ton oil tanker. I know the analogies seem strange but these are true and anyone who has taught or instructed at a high educational level will clearly understand this. We're not saying it's impossible we just want people to understand the risks involved and road safety is paramount there is a reason it was not possible to go from B to C+E for many years and just because there is a shortage of drivers does not mean it is safe to do so. We want people to understand the challenges involved in passing this and then going on to gain employment which is exactly the reason assessments are done.

    I’m kinda old skool sorry to say, I came into the industry just over 20 years ago, started off in a van, already had my 7.5 ton entitlement, cos I passed a few years before the law changed, 6 months later went onto 7.5, did that for years, then out of my own money went for Hgv 2, passed 2nd time, did that for a few years, then paid for my Hgv 1, passed 1st time, including the reverse manoeuvre, 13 years ago, the way they’ve changed the test these days I think is a joke, apparently you don’t even have to do the reverse test, ridiculous……, oh and these days I’m a driving assessor for the company I work at, so to go from a car straight to an Hgv 1, nah, just goes to show how desperate the government has got, and covid proved that, as well as brexit……

    @@Sacrifice-Paid You still have to do a reverse test but it can be done seperatly to the main driving test its optional. I did 2 years on buses Cat D and then went straight to the Artic test rather than mess about with class 2 first as I had the option to straight for HGV 1, going forwards driving a bus and an artic is shockingly similiar in the style you manourve them. Class 2 and class 1 as you will know are completely different to manourve. Because Buses have the steering wheels behind you it forces you to steer later the same as you do in artic to pull the trailer, my instructor did remarkably little instructing and only had to properly teach me when it came to the reversing aspect. I think even if you go straight to class 1 you should be made to do a couple days in a class 2 so you know how to drive both. Of course this is all my expereince and opinion.

    Good video guys. I took my class 1 and 2 after driving coaches for a few years first and while I found the rigid easy the articulated licence was not and I struggled for a few days trying to get used to reversing it. I did pass the course but felt my experience driving larger vehicles helped massively so to go from a car to class one seems ludicrous!! That said I’m sure there are certain people out there with the skills necessary to be able to make the jump but one would imagine the pass rate will be much lower than it is now.

    Exactly the same here. 30 yrars in Bus & coach and took the leap to the dark side in 2020, No issues with he rigid - clean sheet on my test [ humble brag] But, the reverse! Class 1 reveers !! I lost so much sleep the night before my test due to anxiety I was exhausted. Well, I got through it and went through with 2 minors on the road - both of which I debriefed myself and 100% due to fatigue. 1 did a year on class 2, ( hard work) and now have done 4 months on Class 1 , fridges, night trunking. The reverse element of the test is, without doubt, the trickiest element of the test/ job but does it prepare you for the "real world"? I am into RDCs , set lines and all that. I still have good and bad day. I have now grasped is how to sort myself out when I when I get in a bit of a pickle!, to ignore judgement and even ask for help.

    Great vid guys, I’ve watched a few of your vids now and found them clear, informative and entertaining. Coming from a car to learning to drive an articulated lorry is pretty big stuff, and even though the course is 8 days that’s probably still not enough time for some to learn what’s required and be confident enough to do the test and pass first time. I did a 4 day PCV course, passed everything except the practical tests, first one on the reverse exercise but the drive was great no major issues, 2nd test was a total disaster with 11 minors and 2 majors! I lost my mojo by then, I think I would have appreciated more time, I might try again but do my class 2 rigid or just the C1 7.5 t course.

    Depends on your experience just because you only have a car licence doesn't mean you never driven a HGV what if you grew up on a farm driving tractors etc or drove artics in a yard for years previously, In these circumstances you already have the experience the training then is basically the same for an artic or rigid obviously there will be a difference between an artic and an artic on the road but the main principles of the training will be the same teaching you difference between the rules of a car and HGV checking mirrors etc does seem strange the training companies are reluctant to offer this especially if they offer a free assessment first within 1 hour I am sure these trainers can assess if you are more suited to going for a rigid licence first as in chuck them in an artic with their yard ask them to un couple have a lap round the yard and then re couple up the trailer then go for a reversing maneuver this could be done safely in a yard with a trainer monitoring at all times if a mistake is it can be corrected so there is no danger and if they look like they haven't got a clue they can suggest the class 2 first, if they can do all of this confidently with little guidance then I don't see why they need to go for the class 2 first and if the trainer is happy then you could have a full c+e pass within a week imagine how good that would look for the training company if you pass 90% plus of drivers going for the c+e using their assessment method?

    It all hinges on the quality of the training. Any test failure is a direct reflection of the quality of the training received. I am part way through the process and my view is that what I have paid is to get me to being a fully qualified C+E driver. If I need further training and a retest should be included.

  • @NationalDrivingCentre

    That's a very good point and yes the Training is a key feature that's why making sure your instructors are fully qualified before you make the decision on where are you going to be trained is critical. However with the experience I have been doing this for over 20 years, it does come down to the student you could have the best student in the world that responds to all the training but on test day they can fall apart this could be down to nerves or just making a stupid error. Thank you so much for your comment.👍👍👍👍

    Great video guys ... I'm one of the ones on the fence waiting for the 15 November , therorys , Cpc etc all passed, what do I take ? Class 1 or 2 ... One thing you don't mention is at the moment lots of us only have class 2 provisional on our licences, we most probably have to send them back off and wait 2-3 months for DVLA to put class 1 provisional on. I have emailed DVLA and not got a decent response on this Matter. My dad was lucky back in the day to go straight to class 1 .... It took him two tests to achieve a pass so some valid points ... It's not that easy car to class 1 . Great advice going class 2 first .

    Mate, the government has changed the law allowing you to now go direct to C+E if you want. The free assessment should decide nothing more than how many hours of training you will likely need in order to be up to C+E test standard. If you want to go direct to C+E, steer well clear of any training company who tries to suggest after your assessment that you're only good enough for category C rigid training and test. A training company doesn't have any right to be making such statements which would amount to nothing less than unlawful consumer mis-selling. The response to your question which you should have received from NDC was....Yes, you can now go straight to C+E. We would need to carry out a free assessment to have a look at your ability in order to work out how many hours of training you will likely need if you want to go straight to C+E.

  • @NationalDrivingCentre

    @NationalDrivingCentre

    2 жыл бұрын

    Of course if you fail the test in the C+E then you would only retake what you fail, i.e. if it's just a small mistake then a little bit of training would be required to bring that standard up.

  • @xj358

    @xj358

    2 жыл бұрын

    What NDC was trying to say is that under the great new rules of split testing since 29 November 2021 (definitely a big plus for you), if you fail the new part 3a test covering the reverse ect, then you only have to retake the new part 3a test. If you fail the new part 3b test with the examiner, then you only have to retake the new part 3b test. So you no longer even need to retake the full C+E test if you fail, you just retake the part of the test which you failed, either the new part 3a or the new part 3b.

    I passed my car to class 1 recently, and can honestly say that I don't think taking the class 2 test first would've made much of a difference as an artic is a totally different beast. Rigids are just very big vans when it comes to steering etc. Although I would probably do some class 2 rigid work before going straight into class 1 for a living, just to get some experience of driving a lorry on the roads by myself. I am assuming that, if you have done car to class 1, you can still drive a class 2 rigid even though you didn't get the class 2 license first? 🤔

    If you don't mind me asking what training company did you use as I am very interested in going straight for my class 1 as I have been shunting for many years now I both artic and rigids so I do t see the point in taking my class 2 first it takes up too much of my spare time and would be cheaper £3500 to do both over 10 days just doesn't seem worth it if it was closer to £2000 and can be done in 5-6 days that would be much more suitable, I'm not even looking at driving straight away already have a good job with decent hours so I'm just looking at getting my licence as a back up and to keep my options open for the future I work permanent night shift and have young children but in a few years time when they are older I may want to move in less stressful job as I manage a warehouse and have a lot of pressure all the time would be nice just to be able to have the option to do something different that I already have the experience with, like one of these guys said I'd probably drive rigids on the road for a bit before I go full on artic on the road but just like to keep my options open, seems like there are a lot of opportunities out there at the moment if you have a class 1 with some experience but I cannot justify paying basically double when I can already drive an artic with many years of experience under my belt!

    A great question, this would come down to your previous history and general driving ability that’s why we do a free assessment to see your ability. Of course, the government changes are in place and yes you can go direct to C+E from Cat B. However, the training required to get to test standard could be long and get quite pricy. This Is why we are offering this style of training. We believe this is the best way for a student to get the experience they need to achieve the test standard for C+E. I hope this helps and if you have any questions please give us a call.

    So the best thing to do is have a look on the back of the driving license as long as I've got a category B, this will entitle them to drive a vehicle, not exceeding 3.5 tons, maximum authorised mass. I'm so sorry, I'm not too the Weight of a horse 🤔. Once you start going over this weight, then we often teach a 7.5ton vehicle which is also known as a C1. I hope this helps, and if you've got any questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call. I've put a link down below to the government website which should hopefully confirm these points. So would it be better and quicker to send off our licences for updated class 1 provisional after 15th or would we be best doing it after we pass class 2 as I'm thinking if there is a delay between 15th November and out test date we could be refused test if the licence hasn't returned and we have seen many people complain about licence returns waiting months although I did a video on my channel and only took 7 days for our class 2 provisionals 🤔 whats your thoughts? If any 😂

    25 years ago I did this.. We also had 17 year olds with no car licence 14 weeks later holding a full class 1 C+E with HAZMAT qualifications.. The British Army has done this for decades. I got in a rigid on a Monday and passed the test on the Fri and the following weeks end had my C+E Insurance needs to be worked. 17 years with a full license including motorbike I had full Jo claims on my car insurance and I worked overseas for 3 years driving acid and fuel tankers. Returning to UK I lost all my no claims and they wanted 3k to insure a Nissan micra I bought to find work. I had to start it all again. After 3 years reducing insurance I needed a van.. Oh that's another catagory so back to no claims.. Yet if I'm punished on any vehicle on my license it goes across the whole board. Now with a few years with a van I want a car I've lost car no claims. Scam. I could make more deliveries and cover more miles 20 years ago in a truck compared to now. Spend half my day in paperwork and signing in and waiting on sites. The macro is more money for government. Less delivered. More pressure on society and the drivers.

    Hi, I am going to be doing my class 2 training with Taunton driver training after being ripped off by the broker Easy as hgv. I had to get 3 quotes for training cost for JETS/SEETEC earlier this year and although one quote was from Taunton driver training SEETEC decided to go for the cheaper option, the broker! I paid for my medical, MOD 1 myself and had booked and paid for MOD 2 but then got told that I could get my cpc by doing the 35 hrs periodic training as I passed my car test in '87, however it was all done on zoom meetings, I missed 3 and had to rebook and pay these myself, got my cpc, then the driver training in the truck was totally in adequate to actually pass the practical test. I am completely retraining with Taunton driver training next January or before if a cancellation comes up. Please could you do one video warning those who want to train for their licences NOT to use brokers and always go with a reputable company, they will save a lot of money just by avoiding brokers!

    No that's not what we're saying if you've got the experience then like we said in the video your assessment would show that this means you could potentially go for your C+E straight away. That's exactly why we do the assessment.👍

    @@NationalDrivingCentre that's absolute rubbish and not in accordance with the new DVSA rules. There's nothing potentially about it. Even the worst driver can go direct to C+E training regardless of whether or not they might fail. There is no assessment required to decide if a potential candidate is good enough to progress direct to C+E category artic training or can only stick with the the C category rigid training. The assessment should decide nothing more than how many days the training organisation believes they will need to pass the 2 part C+E practical tests. It's about time NDC accepted the new changes without trying to drag new candidates back to category C training and testing. I am being very serious when I say that NDC should be reported to the DVSA for the repeated false claims of "Potentially" being good enough to progress direct to C+E training. That is not part of the new rules and you shouldn't be advising people as such.

    @@comradebismarck These guys are putting out false information in their numerous responses on here regarding the new changes and it should be flagged up to the DVSA to investigate. Under the new rules, it is not a '' Potential'' possibility of going direct to Class 1 if you pass their assessment and if you don't, having to stick with rigid training. From 15 November 2021, you can now go direct to Class 1 training and the assessment should decide nothing more than how much training you are going to need to hopefully pass the C+E tests . It should not involve being advised that you haven't met the minimum assessment standard for C+E and as such, you will have to first undertake category C rigid training.

  • @xj358

    @xj358

    What's your problem NDC with rightful and accurate comment which addresses some of your completely false statements made within this video which are certainly not in accordance with the new DVSA rules. New drivers will have no problem going direct to a Class 1 exactly as the government are now allowing you to do and exactly as we all did 25 years ago when you also had to demonstrate your ability to operate a manual truck gearbox. You will also now be able to fail and then retake the reverse exercise without failing the whole test as has previously been the case, so there is certainly no longer going to be just one difficult test you are working towards on day 8 or 9 (These guys should set the record straight on that false claim). The reality is that it's now going to be significantly easier from 15 November 2021 simply for the fact that the test is being split up in to 2 separate parts for which you have up to 6 months to complete the part 3b training and testing after passing the part 3a test. If you are now going to have to first pass the reverse exercise (part 3a) before being able to progress to the On Road test (part 3b) with the examiner, then there is little point in doing any other training than first completing and passing the part 3a reverse exercise test. Once you've got that part 3a pass certificate in your pocket, you and the training school should then forget about it and move on to the part 3b training and test which again, you have up to 6 months to come back and complete or maybe even go to a different training school for the part 3b training. As such, training schools must now completely separate the part 3a reverse training (and cost) from the part 3b On Road training (and cost) in exactly the same way as category C training was previously undertaken and passed (and paid for) before turning to category C+E training and testing (and a separate payment) at a later date. Again, there is going to be no requirement to complete the new parts 3a & 3b training with the same training school so they therefore have to separate the training and cost as well as separate assessments for the 3a & 3b. You therefore shouldn't have to pay for anything more than part 3a training and test at the outset. Once you've passed that, you can then consider your part 3b training and cost, whether it is straight away or several months later, or even choosing to not continue any further.

    Can you not just do your class 2 get some experience and then do your class one? Just keep them separate. I think it’s unsafe to jump from a car to an arttic.
