What is an Average Speed Camera and how to deal with them

Take a normal speed camera. A few drivers will speed at, let's say 50pmh and then slow right down for the speed camera. After the camera, they will normally start speeding again.
So, some clever person thought of the average speed cameras. How do they work
They come in pairs and will work along with temporary speed signs. Please remember that a speed sign in a red circle is the maximum speed by law. If it's not in a red circle then it is advisable.
Take a normal speed camera. A few drivers will speed at, let's say 50pmh and then slow right down for the speed camera. After the camera, they will normally start speeding again.
The first camera will take a picture of your number plate, your vehicle and the time to the nearest millisecond. The second camera will do the same.
The system then works out the time it took you to travel from the first camera to the second and divides that by the distance travelled. So calculates your average speed.

When I turn onto the A13 they are like every junction, the only fault with them is a petrol station is between 2 so you get people fly down the road doing 90mph pull in get petrol & carry on, only a matter of time b4 they realise and put one just before & just after the garage- basically the quickest from one camara to the next, you do it in less time tgey know you have been speeding

Just a quick question on Average Speed Cameras. I was driving home, and going through road works with no workers present. There was a speed limit of 40mph for a small stretch of a road, then it turned into national speed limit. (70 - dual carriageway with central reservation) I think I was going 50mph in that 40mph but I checked a speed camera map online and it says the cameras were set to 70mph (SPECS) (the 40mph signs were the ones that fold out and stood on the side of the road) Will I get a NIP do you know? Do they alter speed cameras to suit roadworks. Also, which cameras actually record you, the front facing ones or the back facing ones? I sped up after passing the national speed limit sign. But during the 40mph roadwork speed, I think I was doing 50 could be less.

So let’s say for example there’s 4 average speed cameras, and someone speeds through all of them from the first to the last, would that person get multiple speeding tickets as they were speeding from 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4? So essentially 3 speeding tickets?

  • @sheffcityjl1119

You won’t get caught If you pull over because you’ll not have gone over the set time so just pretend you broke down before the camera then set off in a few minutes lol, another way is if your doing 60 in a 50 and slow all the way down to 30 until the next camera it will think you never sped because you’ve not got there under the set time, does that make sense aha

  • @sheffcityjl1119

So basically If it takes 30 seconds to get from A to B at 50 mph and you get there in under the 30 seconds it knows you’ve sped to get there quicker than the set time, but if your doing 60 and pull over/slow down a lot then you will have gone past the threshold of 30 seconds so it would have never knew you sped 😅

Yeah you’re good, honestly if it’s 50 you can get away with doing a constant (ideally handled by cruise control) 55 or 56 for the entire length without worrying about a ticket. Instant speed cameras allow up to 10%+2mph of the posted speed limit before they flash and avg speed check zones work the same way, and just by design of working out an average alongside built-in upper margins you’re actually less likely to be flashed for average speed. That’s because police/highways have to accept that older or less expensive cars will always have less accurate speedometers, and dvsa accept this natural difference between cars and also allow for margin of accuracy, this is because it’d be pretty unfair if your car said you were doing 30 but was actually around 33, you’d be flashed all the time, so they both accept that cars should be able to be a reasonable amount above the real physical speed they’re going. It’s also so that speed cameras don’t increase the risk of a crash, because if everyone was just fully focused on being the exact same speed they’d be less focused on road situation

Hello. It's best not yo speed in the first place. However, the cameras will work out the AVERAGE SPEED. he a person overtakes at 55 miles and it takes that person 30 seconds to overtakes. If that person then drove at 35 mph for 30 second, they are still likely to get a ticket. However, if they continue to drive at 35 miles for leys say, one minute, their average speed will he 45 mph and are still like to get a ticket. However, if the next camera was one and one minutes and 30 seconds away, and they continued driving at 35 mph, their average speed would be below the speed limit of 40 mph And as i said, it's better to speed in the first place

Depends if they’re front or rear facing as well! If forward facing you can usually see exactly where they’re pointed for your lane as you’ll make “eye contact” with the lens as you pass it, best option is to slow to the limit as soon as you see the first set of them. Fun fact: if you enter an avg speed zone you obviously aren’t yet being measured until you hit that first set of cameras, do with that what you will!

With avg speed cameras you can usually tell where they take the shot when you pass them, each camera is pointed at a specific lane, and as you’re passing it you can make “eye contact” with the lens and see exactly where it takes the picture. Generally though it’s around 10 metres before you pass under it, roughly half a second if you’re at 70mph I’d say

Isn't it the case that what are termed "average speed cameras" can be used for more than catching speeders? Sure, you can work out the average speed of a vehicle from the data, but it seems to be much more capable than that. Every journey you take in your car is recorded - the location, date and time, your vehicle registration - at every camera you pass. From this the operator can see when and where every driver is going, regardless of whether you're driving within the speed limit. With the registration details and a cross-reference with DVLA, you can get a vehicle's make and model, including engine size, official MPG and CO2 emission ratings. How long will it be before we face limits or fines for travelling too many times or too far, or even get personal quotas for mileage every month or year? Where does this data get sold/passed on to? How long is it kept? How comfortable are you with private companies and the government watching every journey you, your friends and family make? This is one of the most dangerous developments in terms of freedom of movement and personal privacy that I've seen in my lifetime. It's sold as "average speed cameras" but it's much more than that. I'm worried about it, I think most people should be too.

They definitely take shit like that into account 😂 especially as they’ll know the exact traffic light/junction timings down to the second so the cameras can just take that into account. A lot more shit is connected/networked than you might think, so the cameras might just know all the time the current junction situation and take it into account for the section.

Thankyou for your clear information on the cameras. A week ago I was on a dual carriageway at 11..00pm with no other traffic I accelerated for 10 joyful seconds and throttled back to 60mph the rest of the carriageway but the average speed cameras clocked me !@ {88} mph just before "The Flux capacitor said enough"..fun take it easy! I have a received an intention to" fine me ticket" but I have noticed the last calibration on the cameras was Three years ago. Is my speeding ticket possibly null and void if calibration was over 2 years ago{ 2019 certificate and the cameras last calibration tests and if I were to point this out to the fine people, with any luck would it put the brakes on the ticket or fine comming my way very soon?...is it a life saver perhaps? TKS. If any one can help ....I'd be very relieved and happy ..Thank you and damn my heavy right foot ! All the best from N.I Too old for this stuff now. Yo, I’m a year late so you probably already got this dealt with but it’s always a good idea to question if the calibration was more than a year or 2 before you got flashed, especially average speed cameras as that means you need at least 2 sets of separate cameras to be in good calibration to be accurate. Definitely question this if it happens again! Also yeah get rid of the Abarth, terrible cars for terrible people, basically a Punto with identity issues!😂

Hi Rob. I have never known anyone to get done for going over the speed limit by 1mph. I am assuming the limit was 30mph. I personally would appeal. By law you neef a speedometer working within 10% accracy. So it make sence to charge anyone upto 33mph.

Might be that the speedometer in your car is significantly incorrect. You’ve probably sorted everything by now but could be worth having it calibrated, if you get a legit certified from a DVSA recognised garage you might actually be able to take it back to the police/whoever, possible that if you got 3 points originally you’d have a case to have at least the points removed

  • @TheYjmfan

Let’s face it we’ve all drove in excess of the speed limit but the difference is that it is noted and reduced to the correct speed. But a lot of people don’t even realise the speed they are doing to match the conditions/surroundings they are driving in, for example a side road has a speed limit of 30mph but chances are 30 would be a completely unsuitable speed in that particular road so you you may consider 15mph more suitable.as reaction times in those conditions would be compromised otherwise.speed limits are a guide not a goal.

You’re definitely right with matching the conditions of the road, and I’m sure you already know this but I’m just mentioning it for benefit of others: it can be just as dangerous as excess speed for you to go significantly below the posted limit, especially on national speed limit/country roads, as if you’re sitting at 30-40mph and somebody comes up behind you from a corner going at 60 then they’ve got to be able to react in time, this goes for motorways as well. Most dangerous drivers in UK (in my opinion) are those that just go 40mph everywhere

Some cameras (usually traffic cameras) will capture the driver as well, the picture is usually less than super sharp though so it’s not so detailed that you can see a logo on your tshirt or whatever. Having said that, I’ve def got a bus lane ticket in the post clearly showing me digging real deep up my nose at the time, embarrassing shit

This is all wrong information. Irs average speed of the car at the camera locations. It does not work out the average speed between 1st and 2nd camera. So if the 1st camera catches you at 30mph and 2nd camera at 40mph the average speed is 35mph.

And what your saying about 30 first camera and 40 next camera thats wrong. Its not the speed average its checking. Its checking the time taken. Because you could easily go past first one at 30, boot it to next one and then slow down to 30 again.

Germany had fewer accidents on the Autobahn in 2020 than we did on Smart motorways! Clearly something is wrong and I think it's about the addiction of Money for the agencies

I always set my cruise to 10% higher than the average speed limit and have never had a ticket this way 👍 I do about 20k miles a year. Speed limit triggers are usually limit + 10% + 1 or 2 mph depending on area - also, I recently had a van behind whilst doing a constant 80 in a busy but moving M25 for several miles when a stupid driver undertook 2 lanes of traffic - then the van lit up! (Was an unmarked police vehicle) and went after the idiot. But was happy to sit at 80 with everyone else - just dangerous driving triggered it into action.
