What SCOTTISH People Think About ENGLISH People. SCOTLAND vs ENGLAND

Many people ask if there is still rivalry between Scotland and England, so I decided to go out and ask Scottish people about their English neighbours. I spoke to a range of individuals with interesting views and stories as always.
Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think and if you have anything to add, I'm always happy to know your opinion.

Speaking as a Scot, it’s refreshing to hear a more realistic viewpoint from the Scottish perspective to our southern neighbours. I spent a few years living in Oxford and I can only say I was treated perfectly well and I would hope we can ignore the minority of haters on both sides, continue to enjoy a bit of banter and all get along together on life’s journey.

As someone with a Scot's accent, but who's lived in England for over 30 years, I have never once been abused or criticised for being Scots. Personally I've received nothing but warmth and friendship. There is a difference politically as most Scots have a social conscience and lean to the left, whereas most English ( especially in The Midlands and South) tend to be more concerned with personal success and wealth. Northerners are more like The Scots as they believe in working to live and not the other way around. We are all blessed to be from the UK. Lang may yer lum reek ❤

There was little love lost between them, that's for sure. It puzzles me how the Jacobite Rising still continues to be painted as a Scotland Vs England thing and both countries are guilty of perpetuating that mythology. In reality it was a lost cause from the get go - A dynastic struggle based on religious sectarianism which occurred as a distracting sideshow to the Europe-spanning War of the Austrian Succession.

The animosity doesn’t extend to English people per se. It’s more for the fact that the current set up will always favour London centric southern dynasty governments who don’t care for anything in northern realms. This drives the resentment because the Celtic nations are generally poorer. The politics will always be skewed to be London centric which doesn’t relate to Scots. The average everyday English person, absolutely no issues. It’s the union and representation that is the issue.

Have you ever watched footage of the 1966 World Cup. English fans, to a man, proudly waving union flags. You'll have a job finding a union flag at an England game these days. And do you remember the queen’s 25th, 50th and 60th accession anniversaries which were celebrated with public holidays, street parties and flags flying from every lamppost. The year 2007 saw the 300th anniversary of the union of England and Scotland - no parties, no flags, it barely got a mention in the press. It is not a celebrated union either side of the border and hasn't been for some time. In the last election the Welsh electorate voted in a majority of Labour MPs, the Northern Irish voted away from unionist parties and in Scotland the conservatives lost more than half their seats. The English, meanwhile, overwhelmingly voted for a particularly right wing conservative and unionist party. So, politically at least, we are very much not "as one". I'd say the vast majority of Scots do not dislike the English, but what they are becoming increasingly tired of, is being governed by a political party they didn't vote for.

Hospitality levels were the best I have ever experienced, I can't even explain how chill everyone was. The weather was rough, the people were super nice. I was out drinking once, I was carrying 3 pints and a girl who had several, held the door for me. Which doesn't sound like much but it just put things into perspective. Later on a guy who was with that same group came and made sure my pizza wasn't poisoned for me as well. But seriously never met people who are just enjoying themselves with a certain level of carefree attitude anywhere else.

When I was young, I was really anti English. I was just a kid at the time and heard some others coming out with anti English stuff and just went along with it, without thinking about whether it was true, or not. Of course with any group, the Law of Averages says there are going to be those who do conform to any stereotypes there may be about that group, but that doesn't mean that most of that group conform to them. Out of all the people I know, both Scottish and English, if I was somehow unable to discern accents and whenever anyone told me where they were from, or gave other clues as to their origins, I instantly forgot it (like the guy from the film "Memento"!), I can honestly say that I doubt I could tell who was English and who was Scottish! Personally I agree with what I think George Bernard Shaw once said, namely "Patriotism is thinking that the place you come from is the best, because you happen to come from there!" I also have a German friend who tends to be late for everything and also has a good sense of humour, even thinking that the sick stuff I have told her that Jerry Sadowitz has said, when I have seen him live, is funny! I also have a Swedish friend who is one of the jolliest people you could ever meet, again dispelling stereotypes about gloomy Scandinavians! When I was young, I remember being caught up in all the excitement, hype and over confidence about the 1978 World Cup and the gloating that England hadn't qualified for the second successive time. However, thinking about it now, if the boot had been on the other foot and England had qualified and lots of English people gone on like we did, then there would be all the usual complaining about English arrogance etc.!

This is very nice...but no insult is intended when saying that it is largely theatrical. In the same part of the country when an 'African-American' is identified as such, a vast span of the locals who so prize their European ancestry quake, contemptuously condemning the practice by saying 'Why don't you all just say "American"!' I have no doubt you're a much needed exception to the rule, but neither does any such local pride erupt when somebody talks about the portion of their blood is from Africa...or X... or Y. Unfortunately -- and especially of late -- we are not exemplary of much pride in our ancestral lands, taking even joyous laughter when caging kids, reviling countries as sh&*%hole countries, and blocking whole demographic groups from coming. Tragic. Ugly.

Some Scots assume England is full of White privileged people (Like Boris!) when this could not be further from the truth. I do find the the bit about Scotland been an independent country a bit confusing? as if Scotland wishes to be Independent, why would it want to give all its new found freedom to another Establishment, that will control its Laws etc? Surely Independence means freedom from control of others??

Remember when you was part of Europe it was the UK partnership that that together got results you liked, obviously or you wouldn't be wanting to go back. This has given rise to the SNP's favourite catchphrase of "Scotland being ripped out of the EU against it's will", Even now they claim they have the mandate to seek a new referendum, whivh I find hibhly unlikely, as they are being propped up by the looney Green Party, but at a cost. I think more and more people are beginning to see the total waste of time the SNPS are to Scottish Politics.
