What's the Triumph Street Scrambler really like? - Tarmac & Off-Road Review

Recently I got to put the Triumph Street Scrambler through its paces, and share my thoughts on the bike. As a Street Twin owner, most of my views were a comparison, but there is plenty of info for anyone considering the Street Scrambler.
Thanks to the boys at Jack Lilley Romford for organising the bike.

    Bought this same model and love it. Easy to control and has plenty of power. Had a Vance & Hines 2 into 1 on it but, from my way of thinking, “ if it is a Street Scrambler it has to have Twin Pipes”, so changed back to the original pipes. Also the Dart Flyscreen was a worthwhile addition. Transforms the ride.

    Went from a honda cb125r to training on a cb650r passed test on a monday 14th dec bought one of these a week earlier before everything got locked down again . first day out thought here we go what have i done wow the bike was a absolute dream to ride easier than 650r felt i had been riding for years ( only got 5000 undar my belt over 2020) love it and no i didnt test ride it after watching many reviews this one included just bought it and had my mate ride it home for me nice to be crazy now and then great when a plan comes together.

    HiTony, I don’t get how Triumph have made this bike so much better than the previous model scrambler, from a handling perspective. Weight is similar yet you can chuck the new one about better. Mpg better, etc it’s so different it doesn’t seem so top heavy and it’s definitely quicker. Love it.

    Thanks for reply, the 865 c.c are quite affordable now with new 2018 arriving with 900cc HT. I am attracted to the new models but not sure to settle for the 4k savings

    Hi jeff, yes it’s a tough choice. I still love the 865’s but the LC models do handle better, the box is slicker too. Question is, are they £4K better? If the bmw rninet was a few grand cheaper I probably would have bought that over the st!

    What a fantastic video review, many thanks! I've been trying to decide between ST and SS, and, after extensive research, I believe the choice for the SS is clear after your review. I'm 5'11", fit but not light, and I hate being cramped up. In addition to the fact that I live in India with bad roads and dirt road patches everywhere. I'm still worried about pipe heat on blazing hot 40 deg C summer days here in stop-and-go traffic, but I guess I'll live with that. You recon it'll heat up my right thigh like mad? Also, the peg scraping on aggressive cornering. But I won't be riding it like a sport bike anyway. Indian ST owners have been complaining about lack of clearance, so SS it will be then (if I can swing it with my "accountant" that is!) Many thanks, kudos to the man cave.

    Thanks Jeremy, sounds like the SS is the bike for you. I would have picked it over the ST if it had been available. I don’t think you’ll feel the exhaust heat, as I mention you can put your hand comfortably on the heat shield. If you can scrape the pegs then you’re really getting a lean angle on!

    Jeremy Morse did u get your SC in India? If so how is it? I did a test drive in Europe and after 30 min drive The pipe protection was hot even through my motopants. So I suspect in India it would be crazy and for the passenger I think even worse. Also SS felt more sluggish compared to ST - I know that the same engine but that was a feeling.

    Had a test ride on one today with the noisy pipe ,great engine but did not like the pipe as it made me feel as my leg was being pushed out wards .So I have ordered a new street twin .Thanks to you Tony and Stuart Fillingham .

    I've got Metzler tourance 2's on my bmw f650.. there are great on dry roads but scary in the wet!.. they give you no confidence especially on roundabouts.. next set will be Dunlop.

    Gooch1602 Thank you! I’m 5’10” and the SS is more comfortable. I’ll actually be revisiting the SS with a 2020 model pretty soon

    Would it be possible to convert a Street Twin to a scrambler? What would it take? Are the suspension at both ends longer? And to install the taller wider handlebars, do the wiring harness, brake hose and clutch cable have to be changed as well?

    Theres a whole lot of variables there, and I suspect to match it like for like you might be better off trading the ST in for one. You can get close without going too drastic as you can see here kzread.info/dash/bejne/epVkm5SFiMa6p5M.html

    Yep, the video was a little too long, but your final thoughts are precious. I do own also a 2016 street twin and I always looked at the street scrambler as a valid substitute as I’m 183cm tall and the street twin is just not so comfortable to me. Anyway I had 30.000 km on my twin and this scrambler could give me some more legs room and comfort but I’d not change the twin for the scrambler. Thank you!!😊

    Sadly I didn’t have the bike long enough for any long distance trips, but my Street Twin is fine, and this bike is more comfortable.

    Reflecting back on this review and thinking of the newer versions (street scrambler and scrambler 1200) what do you think, still go for this (used) or go for the newer ones and if so which do you prefer? Thanks, love the site.

    Personally if its a good deal the original street scrambler is a great bike, i'm not sure in reality the new ones offer that much more? I've got a 1200 XC on loan at the moment, its nice to ride, more power obviously, but for what I'd use it for the 900 would be more than sufficient?

    Another great video Tony. Any plans on fitting higher bars on your ST? I´m looking to rise the bars on mine (stock one´s are to low for my taste) but I have not found any risers which would fit, and probably at least the brake line cable/front master cylinder would have to be changed to acomodate the higher bars. Free Spirits has got risers available, but for fat bars ( and I believe the front master cylinder as to be changed to acomodate the hight diference). Would be nice to see a Street Twin owner do it eventually.

    Thanks Ricardo, I've been thinking about it and the obvious and I suspect easiest option is just to fit those from the Street Scrambler. I haven't yet had a chance to work out if there is enough slack in the ST cables to allow it. Freespirits do make a brake extension. It's something I'll look into over the winter, hopefully I can make an episode to cover it

    Hi Ricardo, just seen this comment and I fitted spacers/risers to my 2016 street twin bars. I looked everywhere and finally got some from a guy called Bob, his company is called jack be quick and he is in the USA. I found him online via a triumphrat forum. They are a tight fit and you couldn’t go higher without adjusting the cables which are very snug. They were well made and not expensive…albeit I had to pay postal charges and customs to get them from the UK post office because they came from the US which was more than the risers! Cheers Jackie

    @@mjp_adventures7582 apreciate the reply Jackie. I did end up buying a pair of risers from a german brand named Raisch I believe. Along with Biltwell Moto bars. I ended up taking of the risers eventually, as concerns regarding the loom issues arose and I do believe with the risers of and only the bars on the bike the loom will have plenty more slack. Also, I do find the height with the Moto bars plenty for my liking. Thank you for the heads up. Have fun on your beautiful ST Jackie. 👍 Take care.

    Have the bars been pushed forward ? it seems so.And if so why?..thanx. Oh and with the big front tyre 19 inch? it probabley will not turn in so well.

    Scoot Jockey The bars are how the bike came from the dealer, or do you mean compared to the Street Twin? The move from 18 to 19 inch front wheel isn’t really noticable

    It just looked like they were twisted forward at the begining,all other ( European) tests mainley German moan about the front as if it would tuck in at any moment.

    Ive heard its too slow. What do you think aboit that? Does it need different gearing? Do you miss the 6th gear? I was thinking on going long distance trips in europe with something like this.

    I guess that depends on how you define ‘slow’. It’ll sit comfortably at 70mph all day long in fifth gear, still with plenty of grunt for overtakes. It’s no sportsbike that’s true, but it’s plenty fast enough for what it is. I own a Street Twin which is essentially the same motor, and I can’t say that I miss not having another gear. The 5 speed box is plenty flexible enough

    Hey Tony, great work mate. love your all videos. my question is about the exhaust, is it uncomfortable after few Hours of riding even for pillion ? what about long touring, is this bike good or Street Tween is better for touring?

    The exhaust shielding stays pretty cool so not problems there. The Street Twin would be easier to fit panniers to, however.

    Hi Siddhesh, thanks, much appreciated. You don't notice the exhaust at all when you are riding. I think a pillion will be uncomfortable all the time if you don't switch out the seat to the bench. The stock pillion pad is tiny! Touring should be fine, but a flyscreen would be a useful addition.

    Can we install street twin exhaust to street scrambler ? Because i like street twin but we cant turn off ABS and traction control on Street tween but we can do that on Scrambler right. also ground clearance is high. just that exhaust is too loud to my liking.

    I think the fans might be in a different place, and the mounting is also different. There's almost no difference in sound between the Street Twin and Street Scrambler, though.

    Hi Jeff, its quite a different bike. I've only ridden the older scrambler for a short time but this is quicker, slicker feels lighter and more nimble. Very comfortable to ride, probably about the same seat height

    Say a person can't fully flat foot this bike when sitting on the saddle? Is there a possible way to lower the bike in some way? Just by an inch or two. Enough to flat foot it. What'd you reckon?

    In the States, 85 degrees plus....you need to consciously keep your leg away from the side pipes...particularly at stop lights. It's less annoying at speed. Something to take into account.....

    Are speaking of the Street Scrambler specifically or high pipes in general? The heat shield on this pipe is really effective. Ditching the cat drops the heat even more

    New Street Scrambler with the high pipes. Our traffic lights here are minutes long.....Was about 90 degrees and high humidity during my half hour test ride. Albeit I probably wouldn't be doing too much riding normally at this temp., especially in high traffic areas. Thanks for a great review !!

    Hey Tony, circling back to this video, so in case you see this...I'm considering, and this may sound crazy, flipping my Tiger 800XRT (What's man, are you crazy?) for a Scrambler. The point would be to downsize, lighter, easier bike to manage through daily rides in NYC, plus an arm injury is making me think about something lighter/compact. Does the lack of a 5th gear bother you at highway speed on this or your street? Friends have told me that start to feel like they're working too hard up at the 60-70 mph cruising speed...? I'm also not thrilled with the small tank. Love not having to go to the station! Any thoughts much appreciated! Great work.

    Hi, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea, it’s seems to make sense in the scenario you’ve given. It is after all a smaller, lighter bike. Only occasionally when I first got the bike did I start looking for 6th gear, but soon got used to it. It certainly something that won’t hinder you at 60-70mph. You are giving up 7l of tank space on the SS compared to the Tiger, but to be fair that’s one of the things that helps keep it smaller and lighter I guess. If you’ve not ridden one, go try it out, there will be things that make up for these shortcomings like the sound and the torque. It is a fun bike to ride that’s for sure.

    @@mancavemoto Thanks, Tony! I'm puzzled by the specs which put the dry weight of this and the Tiger as exactly the same. Huh? Of course, 2 more gallons of fuel will add to the Tiger weight, but is it really possible they weigh the same? Eyeballing them alone just doesn't indicate that...? Cheers.

    Now I will make you laugh, 3 months ago I pre-ordered a 2018 speedmaster, I'm just afraid the price is going to escalate well over the 13k Usd and out of my reach. The 2016 speedmaster is accessible around 6.5k, the Indian scout for about 8k but I love the scrambler looks. Thank goodness it's still 30 degrees in NY, time still to decide

    Tubeless tyres on the Street Twin, a great plus point. Get a puncture with those tubed spoke rims and you'll be waiting for the recovery van.

    Views from the Man Cave hmm..so at about 31 i should be ok. Unfortunately the dealer doesn’t have one to try and sit on it. I’m also wondering if the pegs of the SS might fit easily on the ST, what I’m also very curious of is if the ST have enough wire and cable length to fit a slightly taller handle bar or the handle bar of the SS.

    ripmax333 At 31 you should be fine. Apparently the pegs will fit although I haven't tried them myself. There isn't a lot of slack on the ST cables, and i think put anything much higher you would need to extend the fitting for the BMC.

    Have you chunked in the twin for the scrambler? Both are really cool bikes, the scrambler wins it though in my opinion.

    Tony, would it be an easy process to make a switch for a different bike after buying one recently? Dealer wise with Triumph or would it be like signing for a new bike all over again aside from new vin and model?

    Did you buy it outright, or on a pcp/credit deal? If outright it would be an easy switch to trade in with the dealer, but it will cost you!

    Views from the Man Cave I'm financing $4000 through my Credit Union. The bike was $8000, I put down $5000 and my Credit Union put the rest on a check for me to take to the Dealer. 2017 Triumph Street Cup. 0 miles on the odometer when I purchased. But you actually cleared that for me at the end with the note you ended on... That I can add some knobby tires and accessorize and it will come very close. I love it so far and ordered the Triumph Grill and Bezel and British Customs Fender eliminator kit with shock mounted turn signals. I really love that Khaki Green from the Scrambler so I reckon I'll paint it that color next. Only difference it won't be matte. Seems like it's harder to keep clean in matte. No seats have come out for the Street Cup so I'm still waiting for that and I won't switch to knobby tires until these are done. Going for the look that David Beckham's Bonneville has. Looks pretty BadAss. Done up by British Customs. I'm over here in Pennsylvania State so it's starting to warm up now.

    Nice, yes make the SC your own and ride the hell out of it! The Triumph bench seat would look right on the bike i think.... might start to warm up here in the UK, seems like january has lasted 100 days

    I like it, but I'd rather have the BMW Scrambler or the G/S Urban. The rev counter should be analogue and the speedo digital. Does this bike run on tubed tyres? Really good review, though. Nice gloves. What are they, please?

    1990 Good question, I assume they are tubed tyres. The gloves are Lee Parks Design summer Deerskin gloves. My go to gloves if it's not too cold

    but that small green lane that you done in this video with the Scrambler, should be also relatively to do the same with your Street Twin? one big advantage that i see on the scrambler are those removable foot pegs mounts were on the Street Twin and permanently welded on the Frame, I'm worried that in case of a fall they will bent the frame doing un-repairable damage. This happened on many Triumph Tigers. what are your thoughts about this?

    ripmax333 yep its a easy graded green lane, which you could do on most bikes tbh. The footpeg mounts on the ST are also removable, they are bolted on not welded, so I don't see any issue with frame damage from a fall other than what you would expect.

    ripmax333 are you referring to the pillion foot pegs? In which case, yes you are correct, the combined foot peg mount/exhaust hanger is welded to the frame. The mount itself is a smaller gauge than the frame, so is more likely (i think) to snap off before it damages the frame. But in a fall its well protected by the exhausts. It would have to be a a big one that takes an exhaust off before there is any risk to the hangers. I think Triumph have fitted them on the scrambler as its more likely to be used off road, and the high level exhaust doesn't offer any protection from rocks or damage from very rough ground

    I have this same bike (in all black) and i agree with your findings. Although i'm short, and i have to toe-it, it's still worth the effort. I do find the stock seat more comfortable than the street twin seat (i have both). Greatest compliment........... to have a bunch of HD riders come over and say "that's a cool looking bike!"

    To be honest don’t think there is a noticeable difference between the St.Scrambler and the St.Twin... except for a fancy exhaust and tyres

    No original Triumph era 1950s-1970s had black cases, and black rims. I feel Triumph is cheaping out by not making proper polished aluminum cases and chrome rims. But doing the magic marketing trick of selling "blacked out" as a feature. But the truth is, it's cheaper to make it black, and it doesn't look as good. Well, at least on this bike you got 2 colors of actual paint--- the latest ones are 1 color of paint, and the different color stripes are tape!

    But they are not trying to 'recreate' that era with this bike. The T100 and T120 was offered with 'non-black' finishes, this is a different bike. Personally I would buy one with the black enginem, I prefer the look.

    @@mancavemoto Of course they are trying to "recreate" that era~~! Their whole brand image trades on "heritage", "modern classic" and "retro". The engine in this Scrambler looks like a carbon copy of a unit engine which first came out in the 500's in 1959. I haven't seen aluminum cases with chrome rims offered on Triumph's Scramblers since 2006. For that matter, I don't think the 900 "Speed Twin" (their best selling model) was ever thus offered. Oh well. There's surely better things to worry about in life! . 😄
