Triumph Street Scrambler Test Ride

Ойын-сауық

This is the one I've been waiting for. A test ride on the excellent all new Triumph Street Scrambler, and how it compares to the old version that I own.

    Sweet review Phil, just got mine on Wednesday, bloody love it. Crunched some miles on it yesterday, the thing is absolutely amazing. Saying that though I still reckon the 865 still has way more charm and character about it, this new street scrambler feels slightly watered-down because of the more refined nature of it, if you know what I mean.

    Yeh, I get what you mean, the old one just has a more authentic feel to it. The new one feels like a modern take on it, where as the old one still kind of feels old, if that makes sense.

    Hi Phil,,, I normally ride a BM RT,but yesterday I tested the scram.. Yeah it just wants tobe thrashed ,its happy to pull up to around 90, but after my RT I risked being blown off the back.. I loved the engine note and that was with the stock exhaust...Speaking about the exhaust I found the worse thing about the bike was the exhaust in relation to the riding position, it just sticks out too far,, it forces my foot right out to the edge of the footpeg. I really became aware of it when trying to stand on the pegs ,, I think it would have been better too have the downpipes going below the engine, to give more room for your leg,, suppose it ruins the orthotics of the bike thou!!! Another gripe is the master brake cylinder reservoir,, its just too vulnerable to catching a bush or a passing rambler..First thing I would fit is a set of Barkbusters (handgurads),you are going tobe picking this bike out the weeds more then once so best be prepared ..all in all I may well pull the trigger... thanks for the review,,,(have subbed) regards

  • @Phil480

    @Phil480

    Yes, hand guards would be a high priority item if you were taking one off road a lot. The high exhaust isn't as far out on the new one compared to the old one. On mine it's not very comfortable standing up because it does push your leg out. The new one isn't quite as bad. As for the weight, it is an improvement but still quite weighty, most likely too heavy for any serious off roading, but for dirt tracks it's fine really. I took my Scrambler down a dirt track yesterday and loved it. Keep an eye out, there will be a video on that soon :) Thanks for watching!

    Fair commentary. I had the first Scrambler (2006) and I agree I would not get the new one if I had already had the old one,, but I would not hesitate to get the new one when I was ready for a new bike. Better performance across the board on the new one, with some better bits but with some material trade offs I could live with or change out. Oh yeah not sure I would invest in a tail tidy on any bike when you are still stuck with those huge license plates, that just makes it look a little weirder to me.

    Good review, so weird to see you riding the roads where i live/ride/cycle, Rides on South Downs can match anywhere in the world, just wish there were a few less cars around! I think I'll have to road test the Scrambler, Bobber and Street Cup to make my decision. Oh and maybe the T120 and Thruxton......

    There are some great roads around here. Plenty of cyclists around, I had several occasions on that day where car drivers would impatiently overtake a group of cyclists whilst I was oncoming. I would recommend test riding all of the bikes you mentioned there, especially the T120 and Thruxton!

    I love it. Honda did their best to copy what Triumph did way back in the 60s and 70s. I still like the Honda's, but they are not who started the idea. I have always loved the old school looking motorcycles. Im having a hard time getting used to these sport bikes they make today. I think im going to end up trading my 2015 sport bike for a new retro looking bike like the Scrambler's. I just have to get a bike that fits who i am.

    Best thing to do is to test ride as much as you can, and you'll find something that speaks to you. I was fairly convinced that the Street Triple was the one for me, but that was only the 2nd bike I tried and I wan't so into the retro looking bikes back then. Since then I had tried all sorts and it turned out that the Scrambler was the one for me.

    Hello, since you rode both the 865 and 900 which would you get in my situation? My local dealer has the 865 for 6,300 pounds and the 900 for 8,600 pounds.

  • @Phil480

    @Phil480

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Scott, thats a tough one because they are both very good. The new one is better performance and handling wise, no question about that. But the 865 looks better and more true to the Bonneville style (in my opinion). They can both handle a bit of light off-roading, the new one is probably better for that. On the road, they are both fun bikes. I have recently changed the tyres on mine to the same as whats on the new one, and it makes a good difference to the handling on road. So, the new one is worth the extra, but if your dealer has the 865 for £6,300, that sounds like a good price, even better if it's got the Arrow exhaust on it (if not you could probably get a deal on that). Whichever you choose, you're going to have fun on it. It would be worth keeping in mind that the 865 only has a 6k mile service interval. The new one is 10k. Triumph just quoted me £249 for the first 6k mile service (which is mostly an oil and filter change and safety inspection), so it's a bit pricey when it comes to that.

    Hey there, loved the review! I have a question, would this bike be too tall for a beginner rider of shorter stature? I've had the opportunity to look at other Triumphs, and the original Street Twin seemed like a very comfortable fit for me, but when I sat on the previous model Scrambler it felt way too tall for me. I have wanted a Triumph for as long as I have wanted a motorcycle, and I absolutely love the scrambler aesthetic. I'm 5'7" for reference. Thanks! Hope to see more from you soon!

  • @Phil480

    @Phil480

    7 жыл бұрын

    At 5'7" you should be fine on the new scrambler, but it all depends on your inseam and things like that. Best thing to do would be to pop into your local dealership and sit on one to be certain. I think you should be fine. Plus the weight of the new one is a bit lighter but it feels a lot lighter than the old one. The old one is a bit top heavy.

    The Street range are easy bikes to ride, and have good enough safety features, they should be okay as a first bike if the rider is sensible. That being said, for someone with no bike experience whatsoever, I would recommend something with a smaller cc to start with, just to get a feel for things

    I prefer the looks of the air cooled, but the performance of the new liquid cooled engine is far better. Plus it only has a 10k mile service interval as opposed to the usual 6k on the air cooled engine. The only downside I can think of on the liquid cooled engine is the radiator spoiling the looks a bit.

    5ft 3in must be a pain, man... I'm 5ft 8in and I have trouble with most bike's seat height these days. It's not all about their height, though, it's also how wide they are: I flat foot on the of the MT-09 (32.1in seat) and I'm on my tiptoes on the Guzzi V7 III (30.3in seat).

  • @Phil480

    @Phil480

    It is a pain, and very restricting on what bikes I can comfortably ride. I'd agree there, the seat width can be worse. I can fit on some tall supermoto's because they have a narrow seat, but some shorter bikes with a wider seat are harder to reach the floor on.

  • @joaosoares3719

    BMW uses the inner leg curve/length, which is a more useful indicator because it takes into account both the seat height and its narrowest portion. Thick soles on your boots are always a nice help!

    It's worth it if you prefer performance over looks, and the new one benefits from a 10k mile service interval as opposed to the usual 6k on the old one. I have just changed the tyres on my Scrambler for the same ones that the Street Scrambler has, and it makes a good improvement on the road. Also I'm told upgrading the shocks makes a big difference. So you could go for the old one and spend the extra money on upgrades :) I will try and get around to doing a like for like comparison video.
