What's the Deal With Presidential Libraries?

This video is #sponsored by the City of Quincy. To discover more about Quincy, check out the link - discoverquincy.com
Occasionally accused of being “Modern day Pyramids” or “Monuments to someone’s ego”,
presidential libraries have long been divisive institutions, especially when first established.
However, while some have such perceptions of these libraries, it turns out there is vastly more
to them than many people realize, and the more distant we become to the eras these leaders
lived in, the more and more valuable the Presidential libraries become to our understanding of
history and our own evolution as a society, and as humans because of what they contain in an
absolute treasure trove of materials- where it’s not an exaggeration to say that a newly minted
college graduate historian could enter a given Presidential Library one day, spend the next five
decades of their career inside, and only scratch the surface of what that single library holds that
no other institution in the world has. So what exactly are presidential libraries really? What do
they contain? And how did this whole Presidential Library thing start in the first place?

My problem with numerous figures in American History is that many of them are just horrible excuses for human beings. Take Trump's favorite dead president, Andrew Jackson, a cruel slave trader & owner and the man responsible for the Trail of Tears. That some of Trump's MAGA Hatters have hated on a Halfbreed like me and even yelled at me to deport myself to Mexico when some of my ancestors have lived in what is now Canada & the United States for over 14,000 years....

this has been one of my favorite videos from this channel. granted, i'm biased - i don't have a background in records management, but it is ancillary to my day-to-day. and i have friends who (as they put it) "went to library school" and came out records managers for the government. (speaking of very well-paying jobs with relatively low college debt... that's a career path for people interested in details, process, and history.) for sure, i'll be sending this link out to several people. i was personally interested in the structure of creating libraries and that history... it's totally fascinating to me how funding structure is intermingling with policy. Reminds me a bit of places like the Blair House, which has some private funding while serving executive functions. The between-the-lines is hard to read here for people who've probably never seen or understood the shoestring budget usually assigned by congress to facilities serving in those capacities. frankly, NARA has my respect, given its mission requirements weighed against its constraints.

Having had both sets of grandparents live in Quincy, Illinois when I was growing up, and growing up in Virginia, very near Montpelier, the home of President John Adams, hearing him say Quin-Z over and over makes this video nearly unwatchable. *sigh*

This may shock you, but the video about Quincy, sponsored by Quincy, talking about John Quincy Adams is pronouncing the name correctly. If you're pronouncing Quincy, Illinois Quin-C you're wrong. Quincy, Illinois is named after John Quincy Adams (hint Adams County) , who is named after John Quincy who pronounced his name Quin-z. Also, what does Montpelier have to do with John Adams?

But there was that bit about an endowment based on floor space - I see problems - he would have to have the biggest, that would cost real money to the government, and real money is in short supply for the Donald. As for the building itself - it remains to be seen if there is enough bad taste left in the world to achieve the appropriate aesthetic. But overall it would be good if his version of events was preserved in a form he could not keep changing as reality catches him out. 🤞

You can’t possibly know if/how much you’re being misled until you access info from a wide variety of sources including independent journalists. The MSM shows you only a minuscule part of the full picture, cherry picking what they report to support and advance an agenda. They completely omit reporting for many, many issues, subjects and stories because they counter the narrative the MSM works to advance. Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself. You have nothing to lose by expanding your knowledge.
