Yes, that's his biggest influence and it's aspects are obvious to anyone who has seen both weapons detail stripped side-by-side. But also the Remington model 8, and older Soviet designs. The only serious influence from the STG is the 7.62x39 cartridge, which was adopted and mandated by the Soviet government after looking over the German 8mmKurz round used in the STG. More importantly, the continuation of the STG design survived the war, in the prototype iterative stage, as prototypes for the STG-45, designed by Ludwig Vorgrimler. Who then went on to use the same principles in the Spanish CETME rifle. Which later became the HK G3 service rifle and eventually the MP5. So the MP5 is the direct decent of the STG-44.
This is probably the most accurate (excuse the pun) of any of Simon’s videos on firearms from any of his channels! I hate to say it but they’re usually littered with mistakes and inaccuracies. @@Skyrunner_84 It's broadly comparable to .357 Magnum - a powerful pistol cartridge, but nowhere near as much energy as an intermediate rifle cartridge. Funnily enough, as .30 Carbine is to .357, 7.62x39 Soviet is to .30-30 - very similar ballistics, but one is a rimmed cartridge for old-timey Western guns and one is a rimless cartridge for autoloaders.
There is actually an experimental bullet that can follow a curved and adjustable flight path. It's the EXACTO guided bullet developed by DARPA about ten years ago. The steerable nature of the projectile allowed novice snipers to make long-distance shots against moving targets that changed trajectory mid-air.

I can not give Simon and TIFO crew enough props for the accurate and fact based break down of the AR-15 and the technical term assault rifle. And the made up liberal term assault weapon. Bravo and much respect.
Hey, great video with just the facts. Thank you!
One thing everyone forgets about this movie. The bullets weren’t just normal, they were highly modified. Not saying it would work, just saying it is a fact most people don’t mention when discussing the movie.
gun YES bullet NO there saved you all 25 mins
"define:Bullet" (a metal projectile for firing from a rifle, revolver, or other small firearm, typically cylindrical and pointed, and sometimes containing an explosive) A gun that launches sharp metal boomerangs is still a bullet. I don't know if anyone has made a homemade ninja star, but unless you do it perfectly they're really hard to keep in a straight line.
I've been paintballing and you can see the shots curve through the air because they are not spinning. Muskets were incredibly inaccurate back in the day because the musket ball wasn't spinning.
Thank you Simon for a reasonable and accurate definition of weapons classification.
These guns bring back great memories of the early Call of Duty games (WaW,Bo1 and bo2), especially in zombies.
So the kitty thing is based on the Ooda Loop principal. Basically when our brain is expecting something within the relms of predictions, the mind is confused when it sees something it wasn't anticipating, it "loops back" to the time you were making predictions and Basically restarts your thought prossess. Sense the brain can only think at a certain speed it gives the person who fooled it an advantage. There's a story I heard during the Iraq War Part Dux, Marines would toss rubber duckies instead of frag granades (Marines don't use flash) to clear a room.
kalashnikov said the ak-47 was inspiration from the M1 Garand, particularly in the trigger group and bolt carrier group not the stg-44
Excellent content!
You'd need to build something similar to a particle accelerator and use the electromagnetic confinement to curve the bullet.
Hello again, and thank`s for another, very informative video. As "Bonus fact": The most known country and tribesman to me, known as "White Death", used his "Broom" when clearing out, Soviet trenches. This was the famous Suomi MP. Today a priced collectors item. from a Finn in Diaspora
As a note, at 22:30 the 5.56x45mm NATO is compared to the 7.62x54. I believe you meant to say 7.62x39 which is what the AK-47 and AKM is chambered in. The latter is not an intermediate caliber and is more comparable to the 30-06 Springfield that he M1 Garand was cambered in. 7.62x54R is what rifles such as the Mosin Naggant or Dragunov rifles are chambered in.
I once did some very rough calculations for a cap and ball gun, and you could hypothetically get a pretty good curve off the bullet and could probably improve it even more with a specifically designed barrel. Still nothing like in Wanted, but surprisingly prominent all the same. Ive always wished one of the gun channels would try it. (The only tests Ive ever seen were with the usual modern shaped bullets and guns which are of course designed for as straight and stable a flight as possible for obvious reasons.)
Digging the "SW" logo in the background, Simon!
This video already started right , with the awesome Wanted. The game was also good.
Very good Simon, I'm rather impressed
I haven't seen the movie, but it was still an interesting video Simon. Thanks!
So you got a lot right in this and I'm actually really proud that you noted the AR-15 is not an assault weapon. However you did get one thing wrong in regards to talking about the 5.56 and the .223. These rounds while extremely similar are not in fact the same round. A 5.56 is a higher pressure cartridge than the .223 which is why if you have a rifle chambered in 5.56 you can fire a .223 from it however if you have a .223 rifle you can NOT fire a 5.56 through it. Don't get me wrong, it will fit and you might even successfully fire it a few times however the higher pressures will cause massive damage to the firearm and they are not safe to shoot. You run a very real risk of the receiver detonating in your hands and face.
@theformertexan1642

See Scott from Kentucky Ballistics for details on why catastrophic weapon failure due to overpressure is bad.
9:08 The cat pistol is a nod to the Bruce Willis movie "The Last Boy Scout." Crazy weapon. It'd be fun to try out.
As if war wasn't already horrifying enough, imagine not even being able to take cover because the bullets could just go around it
Barrels bend all the time.like all things they wear out. I. The case of small arms you fire rounds that the barrel glows then like all metal that gets to that state easily bends. The weapon can still fire but accurate fire is gone. Fixed defenses with machine gun nests will have spare Barrels for that reason. To swap out before the barrel warps.

Simon has misused the term in brain blaze when talking about pizza gate. He's reading the script so it depends on who wrote it. He has done some videos where he has been good with dealing with intricacies like when he covered US gun control laws and was able to point out quick out quickly that the biggest obstacle is states vs federal rights. As for Assault weapon it's a political term that defined by who is using it and not by legal definitions. Personally I find it's use to be distracting from actually solving the problem since it causes both sides to get bogged in a political argument rather than a discussion on what policies could realistically mitigate gun violence whether it's the mundane stuff or more high profile issues. He also just confused 7.62x54 with the 7.62x39.
There is/was a steerable 50BMG bullet developed by DARPA, the EXACTO Program. I don't think there's any reliable sources on how it actually works, but there's a couple videos floating around of it.
@paulmartin2348

It does NOT use rifling to spin and stabilize the bullet. The bullet can therefore fly like a rocket with guidance surfaces and the amount it curves is still fairly minimal.
There were some experiments years back on making a steerable .50 cal with inflatable sacks that would alter its trajectory mid flight. Never really went anywhere, but it was a neat idea.
I've fired quite a few rounds through a genuine WW1 bolt action American Enfield rifle and can confirm they kick like a mule. Left a bruise on my shoulder for weeks.
Mythbusters ❤ ive never seem wanted lol. Thanks for deep diving this it’s interesting
I would just like to take a moment to appreciate Simon for his proper pronunciation of "Maryland" 😎
Simon just confused 7.62x39 for 7.62x54 again. As for development for intermediate ammo that goes all the way back to WW1. Google the Ribbeyrolles & Federov Avtomat. The Ribbeyrolle shows the idea for developing an intermediate ammo was around before WW2 but became more accepted during & after WW2 along with Federov showing some in the military were considering making a full auto rifle that traded power & range for ease of control & suppression. Another advantage intermediate ammo has is that at close range it has better stopping power than a rifle ammo since it less likely to over penetrate the target and allow for easily follow up shots. This was a known issue far back as the boxer rebellion when soldiers where noting how many shots at close range it would take to drop a target.
China has made at least three CornerShot-like weapons to date: the HD-66, which is based on the CornerShot, and the CF-06. Both models were first unveiled at the China Police Expo (CIPATE) and developed by the Chongging Changfeng Machinery Co Ltd and Shanghai Sea Shield Technologies Company. According to Quing Shanseng, chief designer of the HD-66 and CF-06, both systems are indigenous and were not done based on the CornerShot.
It seems feasible to develop grenade launchers that can curve a grenade around obstacles to some extent (like a curve ball).
In my time in the CF, I used the FN C1 & C2 variants of the FAL and the tried out the M-16 while on joint training exercises with the US Amry a number of times.. Never liked the M-16 as it felt like a toy and that it was lacking in hitting power and range when compared to my FN, atleast as far as I was concerned. But those at a much higher pay grade level than me thought otherwise and the CF adopted the C7 rifle, the Canadian version of the M-16 abet with apparently a number of improvements, to release the much loved FN C1's & C2's.

An American General when leaving Afghanistan was asked about the Canadian under his command, he replied "Well, I wouldn't want to fight them". The sorry state of the CF is nothing new, its always been like under all the party's that made up the government in Ottawa. Can you imagine how loud firing a rifle in a tank would be?
I'am missing the M1 carbine,it is a medium range carbine in caliber .30m1 and an ideal weapon for close combat. And it came in service in the 1940 i dont know the exact year. I had one from 1943 it had not been used in the war, all the numbers were the same on all the parts. If an 30m1 was used in the war they would put parts in it from other 30m1's to make it work again.
Weeeell, theoretically it COULD be possible to fire around a curve right into a circle. However the gravity well necessary for that would make the supermassive black hole at the center of the milky way galaxy look like a grain of sand next to a neutron star.

Neutron star gravity 2*10^12m/s/s Bullet speed. 500m/s Meaning that neutron star gravity can turn that bullet around in a quarter of a nanosecond. During which it will have travelled 0.1 micrometers.

Simon, bravo
What if you used a cartridge with less gunpowder (flies slower), and made the bullet lighter but not nerf light (that’s silly). At what point would it be non lethal and could you potentially curve it while still being lethal?
I probably would of scrolled past this one until I saw it was 24 minutes haha, can't wait to hear what niche info you'll throw at me
DRDC and Colt Canada have prototype smart rifles that can automatically geo locate targets. It can supposedly hit targets around corners or behind cover (although I believe they are explosive rounds)

Can you ever do a dedicated about gun manufacturer
To be honest ar-15 in semi-auto would be more effective in most cases except for close range combat, especially against unarmed civilians... Auto would be out of ammo pretty rapidly
