Less than 1% of people who live to adulthood make it to 100, and living into your 70's in the 1800s really wasn't that uncommon. So I do not at all agree that in Buchanan's time, asking how many 70 year-olds do you know is equivalent to today asking how many centenarians one knows. But I do agree with your overrall point about more robust longevity today in general, just not that extreme. Most certainly, single and unmarried people do not, nor have ever, lived statistically longer lives than married people.

I remember a historian talking about Buchanan and saying at every fork in the political journey he took the wrong turn which is by chance alone, almost impossible to do.

@@sapnamukherjee6716 I'm not judging him anymore. This is a most recent development. The Wikipedia jumps on the rating scale when the president turns the keys over. Only time can tell the merits or faults of a presidency. Everyone loved JFK. He became an idol for many. I am not minimizing the tragedy of death. I applaud him for keeping the troops' casualty count low. President Kennedy had faults, too. I pray for all of them. I will now support President Biden for personal reasons.

Right? The Civil War certainly wasn’t his fault. And the mess of his presidency was cleaned up by Lincoln. The mess of Andrew Johnson’s presidency wasn’t cleaned up until 100 years later.

@@obey2263 He deserves to be rated as *one of* the worst, but he gets singled out as "the" worst because he happened to be the last president prior to the Civil War. IMO, Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan all deserve equal blame and criticism for their ineffectiveness leading up to the war, and should be in a three-way tie for the bottom.

You can not incite an insurrection to overthrow a coequal branch of government (legislative) when you are the president for ALL Americans, not just 35%. All of it was built on the big lie that the election was not fair because he'd rather have just the white votes count, not the black and brown. His tenor and tone over the last 4 years leaves the nation more divided than ever. With two (2) impeachments under his belt and the second one the most bipartisan in history, Don the Con has cemented his legacy and place in history. He will not be remembered kindly and he makes all the other presidents look like heroes.

The title needs updating. "The second worst president in US history."

History will be kind to Trump. What he accomplished in four years has been remarkable. Then to have his re-election stolen from him is a travesty. The division in this country started with the previous administration and the liberal boot licking Antifa and BLM has widened the divide so far it will NEVER be fixed. They are a set of hard plastic presidential figures made by the toy manufacturer LOUIS MARX in the 60's.

Historians back then: “James Buchanan was the worst President in American history.” Donald Trump: “Hold my Diet Coke.”

I find it difficult to take seriously a list that has Wilson in such high esteem.

Not only because he took the country at the only period in time in which it could face the U.S., got captured while fighting some good for nothing Texan hillbillies and agreed to give up half of the country to save himself. But he also let the southern state of Yucatán become a country of its own, lost a leg in a battle and made a public funeral for it. He was a terrible general and he couldn’t compensate for his atrocious economical decisions.
