What's the best 4x4 pickup truck? | 2019 MEGATEST | Autocar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What, then, is the best pickup truck in the land? Is it the Ford Ranger, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, the Mitsubishi L200, the Toyota Hilux, or the Volkswagen Amarok? Or, perhaps, our extra-special wildcard entry? Subscribe now: smarturl.it/autocar
We've got all of the major contenders together in one disused quarry for one massive off-road megatest, to discern which of the above double-cab pickups - all four-wheel drive, all rugged, and all capable of carrying more than one tonne in their load bays - is the fairest of them all.
And once we've done that, we'll line it up against the biggest, baddest pickup truck we've yet driven: a Unimog U218 'implement carrier', ten tonnes and £100,000 worth of badass pickupery.

    This is what happens when people who don't know the tools do the test. In L200 4H, no terrain is entered. In this mode the front to rear ratio is 40/60. In the L200 4H mode, even dry asphalt can rotate a full turn. (Audi quatro style) L200 4HLC is entered into the field. The front to rear ratio is 50/50. L200 4LLC is low mode of rock and deep mud. In other words, there is no 40/60 compared to the vehicle in this position if you put the vehicle in the field is the result. Hilux 4H mode = L200 4HLC. The clever friend who did the test could have applied the correct testing method if he had mixed some catalogs. It can never be used in dry air and at high speeds in 40/60 4x4 mode since Hilux does not have a mid-shift mode with shift It is clearly stated in the user manual. L200 / 4H mode = No Hilux equivalent. L200 / 4HLC mode = Hilux 4H mode. L200 / 4LLC mode = Hilux 4LC mode. Vehicle finder doing test.

    I am English, always drove Mercedes, BMW and VW in the UK. I moved to Thailand and bought a Toyota Hilux Pick Up. Great vehicle, well built and reliable but what I really like is the fact that you can open the bonnet and have access to all the mechanics of the vehicle. With a BMW you spend the first hour removing all the plastic covers to get to the engine and those plastic covers usually break in time.

    Unfortunately that's fairly accurate. It only serves to keep pushing the prices up out of reach for the people that actually need a truck or that a truck is most convenient to use. Meanwhile, us working class people that can't afford a new truck are left picking through the trash on the used market for something usable and that will last longer than a year or two.

  • @KryptoDemon

    @KryptoDemon

    Partially accurate. In the USA people tend to do much more with their vehicles than in the EU/England. Heading down to the local hardware shop and picking up plywood, concrete and filler sand/topsoil is a typical weekend for many Americans. I've lived in both places and have subscribed to both modes of thought, but the EU desperately needs to bring full sized trucks in to help the people with their needs. Right now you can't even if you want. The structure of the roads make it next to impossible.

    @@KryptoDemon Same, spent 17 years in Europe now live in the US. Truth is, in the US, gas is cheap, roads and parking lots are generally huge and modern pickups like the F150 are near luxury cars in terms of comfort & seating. The bed is just a bonus. And you just can't get a true US-style pickup in Europe - there are few reasons: 1. streets & parking are narrow 2. You stuff would get stolen the minute you stop for even a second and perhaps even at traffic lights. The net of this is that most people who need to carry cargo or materials buy vans. For weekend warriors, this sucks as you can only get the (as a general all-purpose vehicle) mini-pickups in this test, none of which can fit a full sheet of ply in the bed....

    In Australia, we grew up with utes. With extra suspension could carry 1 ton. The vehicles shown here are what we call single or crew cab Utes. Yes, they are bigger and carry larger payload, but in day to day running around they are overkill. I remember back in the '70s when I was working out in the Simpson Desert, the local cocky bought a ford F100. The F150 wouldn't fit 3 44gal across the width of the tray whereas the Holden 1 tonner could. So he bought the Holden for increased carrying capacity.

    Sings the amarok’s praises in a test, picks the smallest engines for ranger and Mercedes, tells us how average the Toyota is, final test is how well they tow a unimog..... (because that happens every day) awards victory to Toyota, because it can tow the unimog fastest? Crappy test is crappy to keep the Toyota fans happy it seems.

    It all boils down to gearing,that how come the Toyota has more towing power seemingly but question is how would it fare after half a mile with the others too towing similar truck,crappy test i must confess.Each vehicle handles something better than the other.Subjective test.
