Ford Ranger Raptor vs Toyota HiLux Rugged X Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When you’re comparing a ‘normal’ Ranger with a ‘normal’ HiLux, it’s a much more straightforward comparison. Both models are fighting for exactly the same patch of grass, and go about it in slightly different ways. The Rugged X and the Raptor are both indicators of where this ute market is heading: premium, performance-oriented utes that are shirking their vestige of simple and honest working vehicles.
Where the Raptor has gone is serious suspension performance and bigger off-road rubber, making it a much more potent performer off-road. Aside from lacking a few ponies, the Raptor is a package that works very nicely overall. The amount of effort that goes into making something like this work cannot be underestimated, and is something Ford’s Aussie R&D team should be very proud of.
The HiLux, on the other hand, is more about the bar work and clearance improvements. The recovery points are exquisite, as are the rock sliders. It’s a good base to build upon as a touring 4X4, needing only a canopy, some electrics and better rubber before hitting the road. While the Raptor has won the count, both are awesome. For 4X4 touring, the Raptor will work, but the HiLux will do it better. But in every other sense, the Raptor is a better overall 4X4.

Grass/Gravel/Snow mode - designed to inspire safe and confident driving on off-road slippery and uneven surfaces Mud/Sand mode - tuning vehicle responses for optimum traction and momentum in deep, deformable surfaces like loose sand and mud Rock mode - specifically for low-speed rocky terrain where smooth controllability is key. Put it in the right mode guys

Driving a hilux daily it holds gears in LowRange quite well. Especially in down hill. The ride is average and has no balls for overtaking etc. flex is pretty good. Good to see factory rear lockers finally. Only 8 years after Mitsubishi offered it on the Triton.

You guys can say anything about the Hilux... but if both have to go through this kind of road on a regular basis, there's no doubt which one will last much longer. And, if both do need repairs you can bet the Hilux will not be as bad on your pocket.

Great review. I know there were a few unhappy reviewers feeling it’s biased towards the Ruggered, however still found the test useful. Out of interest, has anyone purchased one they didn’t have their heart set on at the beginning and why? My heart was set on the Ford but I keep coming back to the Toyota. I have no allegiance to either and believe both are excellent overall. Let me know if you were in similar position and what changed your mind.

I bought the Ford Ranger XLT. I'm a little disappointed with the auto gearbox. Takes a bit of getting used to and feels a bit slippy. Plenty of tuning options available to change that but it will void the drive train warranty. To be fair I did come from a manual. Apart from that it's a really good car. Great on road. Very comfortable interior and the tech is really good with adaptive cruise and lane assist. For off road it's a lot easier to fit 33s or larger on the Ranger compared to the Hilux which makes a big difference when modded. The PX3 has the bump stop in the shock which limits front wheel travel to a degree but IFS has pretty poor articulation no matter what. Options to change that too with hydraulic bumpstops etc if you have the dollars.

If you are going to test two 4WD's then make sure you don't have any bias towards a brand in doing so. Carrying more speed in the hilux is an obvious issue in the tests to point out and then also what tyre pressures where you running in the raptor? The tyres did not look as low in pressure as the hiluxes did. Also get the right drive mode for the conditions. You seemed more happy in a lower tech 4WD than the more high tech system found in the ford but then you should be fully learning and understanding both before testing them. What works on a lower tech system is not what works best on a more updated hightech system.

A good overview there. I have the stock Ranger (well, almost stock- lifted and 33's) and have taken it on tracks with a Rugged X. The traction control on the "Yota is significantly better. The problem for the Rugged X comes when you get the next stage harder and need to put the lockers in. The front traction control on the 'Yota turns off and it is behind the Ranger by a long shot. THIS is where cv's are broken. The maintenance of front traction control with the rear locker in is the main reason I chose the Ranger over the Toyota. So far, I haven't regretted the decision but if you don't at least occasionally play hard, the Rugged X is a great vehicle and, as you noted, still quite capable. Whack a front locker in the Rugged X (& better tyres) and you'd be well pleased.

Warning: essay This video was made 2 years ago, and I just got my Ranger Raptor 5 months ago. This is my first time watching this video. I just got back from tracking a trail we're planning to develop into a road (I'm a contractor). There's a lot of deep ruts like in this video, and a lot of loose mud over base course on the flats we just graded. It was raining hard that time. All I have to say is, whoever was driving that Raptor is too affected by Ford's questionable reliability. To be honest, I'm just waiting for my 10 speed to grenade. Idgaf, though, because I'm covered by a 555 promo (5 year warranty, 5 years free maintenance, 5 years free roadside assistance.) I've dealt with shitty Ford aftersales before, but I can definitely make a claim for the gearbox because it really is made out of glass and I can prove it's Ford's fault lol. So how did I go about the trail? I said fuck it and used the Fox shocks and Baja mode for what they're meant to do. I didn't use Rock or Mud mode on the ruts anymore because I was confident enough not to need them, plus the BFG K02 tires gripped fine on the first try so I didn't bother. instagram.com/p/CZqs2sRPPAF/? Here's some shitty pictures of the Raptor on the flats. We couldn't take good pics anywhere else because we just took advantage of a small window when the site security wasn't looking. I gotta say, no other truck on site could perform as effortlessly as my Raptor. We've got Stradas (Triton), Hiluxes, and Navaras, but none of them had the Raptor's straight-up control. All of us slid on the mud, and even the on site PM who was our guide to our designated lot in a Navara Pro-4X would rather go around the ruts than go straight through them. I just went through no problem. We roamed the land for about 2 hours to discuss site schedule and all that jazz while traversing ruts, loose mud, and some muddy puddles that would sink an unsuspecting truck. After the site inspection, my team still had to go back to the office to report, so I drove 40km back on asphalt with dried mud still on the body and wheel wells. It looked pretty cool. The best part, though, is that after all that abuse, there were no rattles, no vibrations, no alignment issues, nothing. It was like I never went through the trail at all. What about the Hilux, though? Let's just say the 2017 suspension upgrade so that it passes the moose test did absolutely nothing. It's still the truck that I see toppled at the side of the road all the time. That title used to belong to the 1st gen Ford Everest. Not anymore. Personally, it's also rather ugly and spartan. It's not reliable anymore, too. I'm getting a lot of nightmare stories about DPF failures and straight-up shit ride quality. The window controls are the first thing to break, and on brand new units too. It's weird seeing somebody in a Hilux Conquest, for example, opening his entire door just to get a toll ticket. It happens a lot. I wouldn't comment on it if it didn't happen so much. I've driven a Hilux Conquest before. It doesn't have a bash plate nor snorkel but otherwise it's the same truck. It's not bad at all. It just isn't the almighty indestructible ISIS transporter that it used to be. In the end, even the Ranger Wildtrak severely outperforms the Hilux. All the latter has going for it is brand loyalty. The Ranger Raptor is absolutely a league above all of them, and actually has a better payload than the Rugged X (750kg RR vs. 738kg HRX). Oh, and about the price, I live in the Philippines, so we got the Ranger Raptor for an equivalent AUD54300. You guys with your taxes got it rough. If you were patient enough to read this, congrats, we both wasted time lol. I just can't fathom how a driver can waste so much potential with all the best stock equipment in the midsize truck category.

Not true. The Ranger (2016 onwards) maintains traction control when in low AND when rear locked. The Toyota doesn't. Big difference when it gets a little harder than this, the Rugged X simply can't keep up. Mind you, stick a front locker on the Rugged X and... (Then all you need to worry about is the dodgy DPF!);-)

Chief Wiggum everyone complains about the hilux “having a bumpy ride” but I truely think that the bumpy on road ride is due to its outstanding off road performance ! You can’t have the best of both worlds and so I think it’s all buyers preference! I personally own a hilux and yes it’s bumpy unloaded but once I have my tools loaded into the back which is almost every day for work it settles down quite nicely !

For Me, Both are impressive, they are well engineered... but they are bit differ in a certain road condition... Raptor is extremely good fast in a plain straight rough road whereas, Hilux is good in a rough mountain because of a bigger .4 or .8 engine compare to raptor which is 2.0...

  • @mikeykeyes

What is even more impressive is the cost- considering 1 Thai Baht is worth zip in AUD these vehicles are real money spinners (pun intended) as you can't lock the cost differential! Both Toyota and Ford followed by Mazda and Nissan make exorbitant profit more like a car and a half per vehicle sold.
